Ubuntu :: Writing To External Media Is Slow To Finalize?

I have a USB hub on my desk, and also a multi-card reader in the front-panel of the computer (connected to a USB PCI card).
I have found that when I write files to a USB "thumb" drive plugged into the USB hub, or to a card in the multi-card reader (I have tried SD, SDHC, CompactFlash and MMC) the file is written quickly. The progress bar that appears on the screen goes to almost 100%, but then stops...
If I try to unmount the filesystem (either umount on the command line, or MB3 and eject or unmount option) I get a message that the device is busy. Sometimes, this stays busy for three minutes.
The filesystems on these cards are almost always FAT32; they are for digital cameras, media players, or are for exchanging files between home and office (where I use WinXP).

I was trying to change the mounting point of a usb external drive from '/media/disk' to '/media/Movies'
Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.

This is a curiosity of mine, and I expect a technical answer, if someone knows it. Why the systems become so irresponsive when doing hard-disk input and output? This happens even if writing is done to a secondary disk where neither the system or the swap are stored.

I have just formated and did a fresh install to start all over. I installed Ubuntu 9.1 and everything went fine but the network. The computer serve as a NAS and MediaPlayer. When getting a file from the server, I get a speed of 40-60mb/sec, which are good for a Gigabit network. When I try to put a file in, the speed can't pass more than 1mb/sec and often stop.

Edit: Looks like it's a Gigabit Problem. I connected the Ubuntu box to my Linksys router which is 10/100 and everything is MUCH faster.

Whenever I am busy reading or writing large files, or large sum of files, my computer is unresponsive. Screens are getting greyed-out and I just can sit there and wait until the reading/writing is done.
This is not caused by the CPU which is overstressed because it is not. Look at the attachments and you will see the CPU is used for about 20%. When these pictures were captured the computer was using hellanzb to unrar a long list of rar-files.
When you look at my signature you see the computer is not bad at all, just disk-access is slow. I can transfer files with a maximum speed of 30MB/s. Is that normal or is it very slow? I don't know the numbers. I have 2 SATA disks.
O.S. is Mint 9-Isadora, based on Ubuntu 10.04 and I use the 64-bits version.

I mount a BD-RE in Debian Jessie to write about 20GB of data. But the writing speed is terrible slow. I get a Speed of 250kb/sec.
Are there any options to increase the speed of writing? I don't use packet writing and no wodim, no growisofs, nothing. I just mounted the disk and I use mc (Midnight commander) to copy the data.

I've been, for some years, an happy user of Highpoint HPT374 based RAID cards, using RAID 5 with decent performances (constantly around 90 MB/sec in read, and 60 MB/sec in write ). Old Athlon mobo , with 2.6.8 kernel. Now the mobo is dead, so I've got an Asrock A330GC (dual proc with 4giga ram), installed Debian with kernel 2.6.26 and moved the controller and disks , and the performances have dropped to a painful 9 MB/sec in write, measured with dd of a huge file (interrupted with kill -USR1 [pidof dd]).
Read performances are still around 90MB/sec, using hdparm -t , repeated many times , figures are constantly around 90MB/sec. I suspect some libata issue , in old kernel the raid was seen as hdb, now is sdb, some driver(s) of the PATA disks may be responsible. I've used the driver, from Highpoint v2.19 , the latest driver is broken (causes kernel oops during format of raid), I've informed Highpoint.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my [newer] Asus laptop.This laptop is my primary computer and I am dual booting Windows 7 ultimate [64-bit] & Ubuntu [64-bit].I really want to break out my DBAN CD [it's a program to format the hard drive completely] and just have Ubuntu on my laptop... but there are two factors restricting me to do this b/c .I need Windows for them [as of now, that is.]
1] I record music on my laptop using this usb "soundcard" dongle. It's made by M-audio and Ubuntu doesn't pick it up, and I have no idea.how to enable it for recording. 2] I can't seem to make my screen any brighter on my laptop. Windows 7 is very bright, but my Ubuntu installation is at full brightness and is still dull. Or would upgrading to the 10.10 version fix it?

I have FC13 with apache up and running. I need to run tomcat to do some dynamic web with eclipse, I checked my setup and noticed that I already have tomcat5 in add/remove software as installed bu can not find any etc/tomcat and not able to find how to test. I went through the FC13 documentaion, nothing is mentioned abou apache tomcat setup finalizing and testing that ships with FC13 it works. I googled and found some docs around setup tomcat6 or tomcat 5 but not how finalize the one shipped with FC13.

I was recently given an old laptop that runs Windows XP. Obviously, I want to put Ubuntu on it instead. However, the laptop is so old that it does not have a working USB connection; nor does it have a CD tray. I am aware of using Wubi to install an Ubuntu system within Windows, but I was wondering if there were any ways to install a clean Ubuntu system right onto the hard drive, without Windows being required. Or, perhaps, does Wubi have some feature to allow full-drive installation?

I am trying to access an external hard drive mounted on /media/disk_label/ over FTP anonymously. The thing is it does not work as intended.
I tried fiddling with se-linux, manually mounting the media, playing around with file permissions and stuff .. but nothing sufficed.
Things work fine when I set anon_root to a directory on the local hdd but and also with the default /var/ftp but as soon as I set anon_root=/media/disk_label/ftp ..

I just bought an external USB DVD (ASUS SDRW-08D15-U) to use on a Kubuntu-based LinuxMCE system. The idea is to set up the computer in the basement and to retain the ability to play DVDs on the 2nd floor home theater. Unfortunately the DVD would not play movies, music, or show files when connected to the Kubuntu/LinuxMCE machine. I tested the drive on my windows laptop and it worked fine. Then I connected it to my Ubuntu desktop machine and got the same behavior as on the MCE machine.
This leads me to believe that my hardware is functioning fine, but I have an Ubuntu/Kubuntu issue. I figure if I can get the drive to work on my Ubuntu desktop, then I can apply the fix to my MCE machine. I opened the Palimpsest Disk Utility (System>Administration>Disk Utility) and saw my internal DVD listed (ASUS DRW-1612BL). When I hot-plugged the external DVD it appeared underneath the internal drive. But here is the strange part - when I insert any type of media into the external drive it Vanishes from the list, accompanied by a repetitive pattern of clicking and whirring noises. Very mysterious.

Unless I am logged in as root, I am unable to mount an external device (such as a flash drive or music player) This is what I get: I can, of course, pull up a root terminal and use the mount command, but I don't want every user to have access to the root terminal, but I would like everyone to be able to mount external devices. My media library isn't huge, but it isn't tiny (~50 GB). Every month or so, I just manually copy ~/Music, ~/Pictures, and ~/Videos to my EHD, and delete the old backup. But this is far from ideal. It's pretty slow, for one thing (~50 GB all together). It also isn't versioned, so if I ever want to go back multiple versions, I'm out of luck.
Is there any simple, stable, incremental way to do this? I'm open to using traditional version control systems like Git for it, although I haven't used them before for anything other than code. Command-line is fine (especially if it's scriptable). I only need to back up these 3 folders--anything that's not media is stored in my Dropbox.

For some reason everytime I open nautalius or mount an external media showFoto launches, I tried looking at "Perferred Applications" but not seeing anything useful. I tried searching google and this site with a possible solution but no joy. I am using Fedora 14 with Gnome.

I have tried unsucessfully to enable automounting for my 40 GB External Hard Drive in Suse 11.1. I am aware that there should be a line added to the Policy Kit to enable this, but the issue is that all of these files are .xml format and I can't seem to open them for editing no matter what program I choose to open them. I have Device Automounter/Notifier Plasmoid and it shows the SD reader with card in it, but it does not show the USB external HD.
Is there any other way to change this so I do not have to attach this external manually every time I turn this computer on? All of my music rests within my external and it gets to be very annoying when you have to manually mount to listen to music all the time. I'm using Suse 11.1, KDE. The external is a 40GB HD from Seagate.

I recently purchased an iRiver P7 media player which I am using with Rhythmbox under Ubuntu 9.04. The transfer speed when uploading files to the player is phenomenally slow - the first 50 or so MB reported virtually instantly then the speed immediately drops to about 12-15KB/sec yes KB/sec so a 3-400MB video file takes hours to transfer to the player. This happens with the internal memory and the added memory (SD card) too, althoufg it is faster ror the SD card. No other devices have ever behaved like this on this system (and I have used 2 different Creative players, a different iRiver player and numerous memory sticks). The computer is dual booting with windows (for once that was useful) and under windows it doesn't happen, the speed is as expected so it isn't the hardware. I don't want to have to resort to damned windoze just for this. dmesg after plugging in the player shows it identifying both the internal storage and the added SD card but I don't understand the rest of it:

This last message gets repeated lots of times, and during transfers it seems to be issued continuously and I suppose this is why the system is so slow because it is always retrying loads of times before a success.

I worry about mounting properly an external USB hard disk.
It is a sata 1To NTFS formatted
It works perfectly with a XP SP3.
With xuxbuntu 10.10 , with ntfs-3g installed , it is VERY long to transfer data:it took almost 3 days for 360Go.
When I connect to the station , it automatically mount by itself on /media/disk without any option;I suspect bad options are used and no use of NTFS-3G.
How to oblige it to mount with good options?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an external hard disk. It boots very very slow. I get a black screen for about 2 minutes, with the led of the HDD regularly blinking. The hard disk is OK, so it's type isn't the issue here. Is there anything I can do about it?
I can't (don't want to) install it on my main hard disk, since I already have Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 installed there and it's getting a bit too crowded.

I am booting a certain system of mine with ubuntu 9.10 from external HDD. I am satisfied with the setup and it works fine, however I would like to modify it so that I can choose which graphic card drivers to load during the boot time. Specifically I would like to choose between:
nvidia proprietary driver
ati proprietary driver
generic driver
Currently if I am using proprietary drivers then dont boot into X, delete xorg.conf, start gdm and reconfigure the system using jockey (for hardware drivers).
What would be the steps to make this (semi-)automatic and avoid restarting X?
Where could one find examples of such scripts?

I was wondering, what if you had a flash drive formatted with an FS that has UNIX permissions. Then what if you copied some of your files onto it. And then put it into another computer that has a user account by the same name. WIll the user be able to access the files?What if you named your own user differently on the other computer, will you be able to get your files?

I'm trying to back up my hard drive to a 2 TB WD external so that I can do a clean install of 10.10, however I'm getting tremendously slow write speeds. It hovers around 1.5 MB/s and steadily slows from there. It tells me it will take 150+ hours to transfer 400 GB of data.
I have a AMD quad core processor and 8 gigs of ddr3 ram... USB 2.0... I feel this should go much faster.
