I have a question about the prompt. it is very easy to tune it for it to be colored and display path where you are etc. But my problem is that when the path is too long I would prefer the code line to be on the folowing line...

and to be honnest as I am very new in LINUX I don't know how to do this...
I'm having a hard time googling for answers because I keep using the word "keyword."
I've never really used any kind of database before, but I want to learn the basics, so I'm playing with it a little bit at work. What I want to do is make a database to hold information on various articles. For example, with columns for the title, author, and date. Those are all easy. The tricky part is that I'd also like to be able to label articles with keywords so I can search for certain topics.
Since there's no way to know ahead of time how many keywords, if any, each article might warrant, I'm not sure how to put this in database form. There's no variable-sized array data type. It seems sloppy to just list them all in a single VARCHAR column. Making several columns that may or may not be left null and putting one keyword in each seems wasteful.
I need to search a text file for a string of numbers which are different lengths, and always are between number=" and " like:
number="1234567890"
number="22390"
I need to grab those numbers and pipe each one to a line in a file. I've already tried something with awk and that didn't seem to work.
I want a line or lines to check for variable length in my script. I just want to check if a variable the user inputted is 4 characters long, and if it isn't to return a false or exit status of 0.

Some say because the record is not in a fixed length so rec_len is the real record length. Why is the length of the array `name' not fixed? I thought C arrays like this should be fixed length. C99 has variable-length arrays, does this structure count on C99?
This is a problem regarding VxWorks. Sometimes i am not able to type anything in the command prompt of vxWorks console.

After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 I no longer get a login prompt when switching to console mode e.g. (CTRL+ALT)-F1. Instead i just get blinking cursor in the top left corner. Key strokes are printed the screen but otherwise nothing happens. I can switch back and forth between X and the console normally.
Where are the consoles configured, and is there a corresponding log somewhere i can check? Has anyone had similars problem?
My system is an old Amilo Pro laptop with a VIA 800 compatible chip-set.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my 32gb flash drive. Just one large partition for the OS and about a gig for swap. Worked fine. Booted to USB on two computers and a laptop at home. Fine. Figured I'd try it on a work pc for the sake of testing a random computer. Well I stick the drive in, boot up, select usb from the boot menu and bam Ubuntu starts loading. I look away, it's cool ubuntu's loading. Well I turn back and it's a black screen. It's "<username>@whatever login:" or something close.
I use the username and password I created during installation and what I used to login to the computer like fifty million times while booted into Ubuntu. Well, invalid login. The first time I installed this OS on this drive I updated it through the update manager and rebooted. Next thing I know I type in my username and password, hit enter, and bam black screen, some stuff, then im asked to login again. Now after this next iteration I am faced with yet another faulty login screen. What is up with this OS?
How to change the console login prompt settings in slackware 13.1 x64? I tried googling but couldnt find anything, maybe I dont know what it's called.. I mean when the system boot and boots into console asking login info, how to reset the console to new page/clear screen(clearing all the boot up info lines) before it prompts to login. Like for example if after logged into a tty I type exit, I want the screen to refresh(reset?) such that all screen info is cleared and only login prompt is shown on the top left of the screen, like in fedora shell prompt.

I assumed (perhaps optimistically?) that newer kernels would be backward-compatible, and that any dependencies on other software would be enforced by the package mechanisms. View 6 Replies View RelatedIs this a beta version or something? I installed this version because it came as a live cd coupled with emc2 for cnc machining. I cannot get anything to work correctly. I tried to install Mozilla thunderbird using the application manager and it is very slow. It takes forever for the menus to open. or emails and is virtually unusable. I tried to use the startup manager and it killed my grub bootloader so I needed to reinstall. I couldnt successfully use the grub2 console prompt to log back into linux even though I ollwed several tutorials for this. I tried to install the flash player plugin and it kept telling me still to install it before I could watch flash videos even though I had installed it 3 or 4 times. I just tried to install evolution mail and it cannot log into my gmail account. I tried to install swift dove which is a faster version of thunderbird and it says it is starting but then never does. I am reasonably sure I should hang in there as I have heard Ubuntu is very good as an os.

i don't have a script yet but each time through the loop i intend to cd to a particular directory and then define a variable containing a list of each object in that directory as values. for the rest of the script to work, each variable generated has to be unique, and i can't think of a good way to accomplish this.
if using a value from one variable to name another isn't possible, can anyone think of a more elegant solution? i know limited syntax but i'm willing to read up...

Column A has our complete product list Column B has product list from Manufacturer 1 There are only certain/some rows which are common between 2 columns. and also, column B is not a subset of column A. Column A has extra entries and so does column B. I need to know, which rows from Column B, are common with Column A which rows from Column B are not common with Column A. Essentially I want to know from this list, how many of our products are from my manufacturer 1, how many does my manufacturer has which we dont carry.
How would I acheive this? My natural approach to solving this kind of obstacle is to reach for MS excel and use its lookup function, but its not working... Its taking forever and hanging up. since the file is so huge and probably my excel skills are really bad.
How can I do this from command line? I am looking for awk command if possible instead of sed since I am trying to pick up its syntax and usage etc. My thought process is, sort column A,B, for every row in A, lookup and output based on condition. Dont know if I am on the right track.
i've got a file with sorted words - one on each line.How could it be possible to delete thouse lines that have words of length 1 or 2 (1-2 letters). I guess a good way it will be with AWK, n its fuction length(), but getting it, i dont know how to delete those very lines.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and find that if I leave the machine for more than a couple minutes, it will automatically log me out. Instructions at other sites have indicated that session controls are to be found in System>Properties. But there is no Session in the list under Properties in Ubuntu 10.04. How can I control this feature so that I'm not having to constantly login every time I turn around? I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution.

I'm trying to recover movie files from my TNT receiver hard drive but it corrupts its FAT32 allocation table (crappy cheap device...)
Using dosfsck is useless because the correct file length is the cluster length, not the (shorter) one in the table, and dosfsck only proposes to shorten the file, which I won't do.
Question: how to recover a file using the FAT cluster chain instead of using the stored length in the FAT table?
I've searched everywhere and I can't come up with a good solution. For each line I need to find the average, min, and max. I've seen plenty of solutions where the number of columns is fixed, unfortunately for me these lines can get pretty large. My thought was to read each line individually into an array, loop through the array and find the avg, min, and max that way but i haven't had much luck. I can read each line using a while loop but I'm having trouble with the array part, or perhaps that's not the best solution?
