I've been using debian unstable for some months, and after some problems I've been having with the nvidia non-free drivers and pulseaudio, I decided to do a new fresh install. As in the first time, I used a netinst CD, and all went ok. The first three times it booted perfectly, with gnome and all the apps, without problems. I updated the system with the unstable repositories, and I went home (i was somewhere else).
When I got home (like an hour ago), my new debian OS boots, but it brings me to the console, instead of automatically logging me in normally, with the GUI and Gnome and everything. It asks for login and password, and then it's just the console, and if I type, for example, Iceweasel or vlc or any program, it tells me that there's no display or that the X window system is not available. What happens?
It worked just fine a few hours ago, ant I only updated my system...! Also, it booted normally a few times after upgrading, so it's quite strange. Also, before that, I tried to install Debian Testing from a CD ISO image, and I succeeded, but the same happened so I used the netinst image and it worked. But now it just won't work...
My partition system is now like this:
/dev/sda4 - ext4 Debian Sid (old one) mounted as / [BOOT]
/dev/sda1 - extended, containing new one:
/dev/sda5 - ext4 Debian Sid (new one) mounted as /
/dev/sda6 - swap (new one)
/dev/sda7 - ext4 Debian Sid (new one) mounted as /home/
/dev/sda3 - swap (old one)
(bold means "primary" partitions, italics means the logical partitions inside the extended one)
I have a VM based on SUSE 11.3 that boots into a console in run level 3. I am used GNOME so I am trying to get it installed but not having any success. I don't know a lot about the VM as I got it 2nd hand.
So far I have gone into YAST and installed gdm and all the dependencies. I have changed from Run level 3 to 5.
When I run startx I get
xauth: creating new authority file /root/ /serverauth.15072 /etc/x11/xinit/xserverrc: line 56: exec: X: not found giving up xinit: No such file or directory (error2): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (error3): Server error.
Ubuntu has stopped booting correctly. Now it shows the Ubuntu logo and then, instead of GDM, it shows a console login prompt. How do I go about troubleshooting this?'m in Windows XP (which I like a lot better than Ubuntu, because it actually works) but all my files and work are on my Linux partition.
can i make an animated screen that appears when Debian boots up, i want it to resemble the Mac OS X splash screen with the apple logo in the center and a spiral but instead of the apple logo i want the Debian logo instead just thought it be a cool addition to add to my system it should look like this
[URL]
but i want the Debian logo in the place of the apple logo, is it possible to make a custom splash boot-up screen
my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:
the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.
finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.
usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.
this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.
right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.
the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??
I'm not sure of what is going on here, I might be missing something obvious, but anyway my fresh netinstall of Testing doesn't boot without the USB stick that I installed from plugged in. When USB plugged in it boots without problems.
My usb stick with Debian only loads from the usb hub it's crazy. I just tried putting the usb stick onto a usb3 port in my desktop and also on a usb2 port even the one where the usb hub is connected to and it wont' load!. Same initramfs prompt happens as when connected on the laptop usb ports.
the usb hub has usb2 speeds so is not that the stick is under usb1.1 emulation.
I noticed that when my server boots up, it's network interface on eth0 is always down and I always must run the 'ifup eth0' command in order to get it to work for some reason. I checked my configuration and it looks legit to me...
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
[Code]...
Anyone know why my system is booting with out bringing up my eth0 interface? It's very annoying.
This is after months of Mint, which is limited. One problem. It (Deb)boots to the terminal mode. uh... call me stupid, but I have no idea how to get to my desktop. Never needed that command once in my life. I can't find the answer anywhere. Typical. The most basic info is always overlooked. Whats the command line to get to the desktop so I can reconfig this?
First of all, my computer is running Debian Jessie. uname -a gives me this output: Code: Select allLinux felix-PC 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u3 (2015-08-04) x86_64 GNU/Linux
So today I updated my system with aptitude update and aptitude upgrade, and there was few paquages that were updated. Among them was one "linux-image" or "linux-headers". I believe that it is linked to this security update: [URL].... .
During the time aptitude upgrade was running, I was simply surfing on Iceweasel. However, it seems that my system suddenly restarted, without asking me the permission or without notifying me. It really looked like I pressed the restart key, but I actually didn't. My computer battery was full charged and plugged in. So, I do believe that it is my system that rebooted himself after the aptitude upgrade was completed (or even during the upgrade, I don't know).
So my computer restarts, and brings me to GRUB menu: I boot Debian and then I get the usual [ OK ] ***** lines telling that the system boots normally. But this time, I get some errors:
Code: Select all[FAILED] Failed to set up automount Arbitrary Executable file format file system Automount point ... [FAILED] Failed to start load kernel module ... [FAILED] Failed to mount /boot/efi [DEPEND] Dependency failed for Local File Systems
I arrive then in Emergency mode with this message: Code: Select all Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again to boot into default mode. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue):
I tried systemctl default but it doesn't boot my system normally. I also tried Control-D but it just reprints the same message. And finally I typed journalctl -xb, which gives me a long log file (855 lines) that I do not understand.
I would give this log file, but it seems that my internet connexion is broken (because of the kernel, I mean), even with an Ethernet cable. So I can't connect with ssh to the computer I use at the moment, and I can't either send it to myself by mail. I tried to mount an usb key, but it seems that any key won't be mounted because of a kernel problem.
An obvious solution to my problem may be to come back to an older kernel version. However, only the lasted kernel version (x86_64 Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64) is installed. dpkg --list | grep linux-image gives me indeed:
Code: Select alliF linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u3 amd64 Linux 3.16 for 64-bit PCs ii linux-image-amd64 3.16+63 amd64 Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)
I do not know how to come back to an older kernel, as far as I haven't any internet connection and as far as I seem to not be able to load an usb key.
I wanted to install Debian 8.0 on my second hdd in my UEFI machine, but when I choose UEFI boot from USB, GRUB command line appears, and I cannot boot up the setup. I used Rufus to create the bootable USB stick, using the amd64 kde CD image. I tried several images and I deleted the Linux and Efi partitions from previous installation of Ubuntu . Also I deleted GRUB from the Windows 7 Efi partition.
In the UEFI setup fast boot and secure boot are disabled, and I don't seem to have the option to boot in legacy mode, if I choose the simple USB boot option (without "UEFI" in front) I get "please insert correct boot media, and press any key or reboot". I couldn't manually boot from GRUB command line, because it is showing that all the drives are empty, and if I type "boot" I get "please load the kernel first".
I installed Lenny on a computer and set up grub to boot windows by default with a timeout of 0 Is there a way to interrupt the boot process so I can boot linux? Or can I boot from a flash drive somehow? PS: nothing to do with topic, but I just found out that the top 24 supercomputers run linux , and more besides. That is way cool. check out [URL]..
I'm getting BSOD when I'm booting my main system (debian 8 fully updated). I get a BSOD with a _ sign. URL...because I can't access to failed boots files. Besides having the files

How can I change the automatic fsck execution at boot time to be above 30 boots? I reboot the system sometimes 3 to 4 times a day. Intel 3 GHz, tower, i386 lenny vmlinuz-2.6.31-686
How can I start a program from tty1 console text mode to be executed in tty2 console text mode? Actualy I would like to start a program (chat client cli program) in tty8 automaticaly when linux PC boots.
after an upgrade i got an american keyboard-layout in the login-terminal. i ran dpkg-reconfigure console-data: its said keyboard layout would be german. i ran dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-layout: same thing. i checked the bugs for console-data and keyboard-layout: [URL] and the best i could find is this (console unusable after upgrade): [URL] but it doesnt seem to be exactly the same problem. its since about a week.main problem is the password, else its a little annoyance, not more.
playing with debian I find that I have no answer when I try to resize my console if I wish to use it without a GUI. Are there something that could resize the screen ? In this moment it seems to be 640x480 and it could be better if the resolution could be 800x600. I have tryed to modified /etc/grub/00_header
if [ "x${GRUB_GFXMODE}" = "x" ] ; then GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600 ; fi
I have Debian 4.0. I have installed screen package, and one application has been run in screen. I want to know how make something like "screenshot" of this screen status and send it over ftp. Could someone write me script with I could add to cron?
Now I know that I could use "consolechar" command with option "f " to set other fonts temporarily. The problem for me now is that I had tried almost all of those fonts in directory /usr/share/consolefont/, but I could not find a suitable one, none of them are beautiful. So, I hope one can tell me how to get the fonts and how to set the font I like to be lasting.
I'm trying to setup X-less (console only) system on my old laptop. Everything works great, except colors of the console. When grub2's "gfxpayload" is not set, all colors appear fine, but when I set gfxpayload=1024x768" it starts with the correct resolution, but all color that's supposed to be white, appears teal (sea green).Interesting thing is that bold text in man pages appears white but not bold. Hyperlinks in links also appear white, although the selected hyperlink appears with a teal background. So the driver apperently can display other colors, but what's stopping it? Erasing "gfxpayload=1024x768" restores the colors back. Changing font's face and size didn't help. Using screen didn't help. GPM's pointer appears as a teal rect.
I have a dell poweredge server. In the bios, it has the option to redirect the screen to the serial port. There is also the check box "redirection after boot" which from what I understand will let me to continue to use the serial port attached to a terminal as if it was the main VGA monitor with a keyboard attached.
When I start the machine up, everything goes as expected, I see the output from the bios on my serial terminal, until debian actually starts booting. It all goes blank. If i attach a monitor i can see it is indeed booted and waiting at the debian login prompt. What should I do from here? I was under the impression that if i enabled "console redirection after boot" that the os would be none the wiser and i could continue using the serial console as the main screen as needed, but that does not seem to be the case.
My wireless works without issue with network manager. However I notice that it seems to be a gui only app. That is, when I stop the display manager my laptop loses internet connectivity. The NetworkManager service is still running. Is there a commandline method of using the NetworkManager settings to start the wireless connetion?
I'm having a problem with getting the console to display special characters. I can type special characters in on the command line but they arent outputted properly when using something like aptitude or man. What I find strange is that in X the same programs work fine.
Heres the locale settings: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE="en_GB.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="en_GB.UTF-8"
[Code].....
Unfortunately I dont know how to find the font settings.
I have console only on my machine and I have two problems with it:
1) I can't find how to enable programmer dvorak keyboard layout.
2) All the console settings don't stay after reboot, I have to do dpkg-reconfigure console-setup again. But after I do that I loose russian layout that I normally can switch to with Alt+Shift.
After reinstalling Squeeze's base system, the console font is too small to read comfortably. I tried to pass the kernel parameter vga=0x303 without success. After init starts the font reverts to a very small font that I cannot read comfortably on my 17 inch TFT LCD monitor.
