Debian :: How To Receive Non-security Updates

Sep 3, 2011

I recently reported a bug in a package, which was fixed upstream and in the Debian package, but the bug was not security-related. The Debian settings on all of the computers is set to receive only the security updates. The other setting for proposed updates, is currently not enabled

Must Proposed Updates be enabled, in order to receive the non-security updates, including the update to the package in question?

Debian :: Can't Receive System Messages

Mar 2, 2010

I have a small LAN. I am in the process of installing a Debian Lenny/Squeeze system into the LAN. I want to send and receive system messages using rwalld and wall.I can send a system message from my Debian system to another box using rwall. I can send a local message within the Debian box using wall in a console.I cannot send a local message using wall Konsole in KDE 3.5.x. The KDE Write daemon fails to provide any pop-up window./usr/bin/wall is installed from the bsdutils package and is set to -rwxr-sr-x.

The ktalkd package is installed. The KDE control center shows a configuration option in Internet & Network settings called Local Network Chat. When not in X, mesg is set to y at the console. After starting KDE and I open Konsole, mesg is always set to n. I don't know how this setting toggles. Further, setting mesg to y in Konsole has no effect on getting wall to work.mesg is set to y when I run xterm in KDE. Then wall works within that terminal window. However, the KDE Write daemon does not see the message in xterm. When I send a message from another system to the Debian system using rwall, xterm receives the message but not Konsole or the KDE Write daemon.

When I send a wall message from Konsole, xterm receives the message but not Konsole or the KDE Write daemon.I changed TTYPERM in login.defs to 0620 to no avail.I do not have this problem on the non-Debian systems.

Networking :: Send / Receive Multiple Raw Packets In One System Call

Aug 27, 2010

I need to receive a number of raw ethernet packets (say, 100 packets) into a user-mode accessible buffer large enough to hold all the packets. The way I have done this so far is by looping over the recvfrom() system call 100 times, passing an incremented pointer addressing the location in my buffer to store the packet. Is there a way to receive the 100 packets into my buffer with one system call, perhaps by instructing the kernel to DMA the 100 packets into my buffer?

Fedora :: System - Software Updates

Aug 13, 2009

I just installed F11 on my laptop last night....the first thing I did was download Updates. Initially I wanted to focus on getting the critical updates installed only and while almost dozing off (Late night) I inadvertently ended up doing a bunch of other software updates. I wanted to know peoples thoughts...about software and system updates...do many of you just update everything or select the most important to download and install. Is there a way to rollback from any updates you installed...I have plenty of HD space..but if I don't need it...I dont want to keep it installed...also how many of you really look at every update to find out what is? Or do you just let it ride and install everything?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Updates Choked System?

Jan 23, 2011

I am looking for ideas or an explanation of what happened to this system during an update. Here are the details: I had a fresh version of Ubuntu 10.10 installed in its own partition and it seemed to be running OK. I decided to get all of the updates for it so I fired up the Update Manager. I decided to get everything so I left all of the selections checked. Then I started it updating and observed that was going to download more than 200 MB so I went away for a while.

In normal operation I get about 80K bytes/sec download speed due to my internet connection speed. This allows the system to loaf along and the CPUs typically report only about 2 to 7 percent usage.

I had a few other things running before I started the updates: a terminal, the system monitor, and Firefox. I had ssh connected from another machine. When I returned to the system I found that the progress bar showed about 2/3 done and the update manager was announcing the name of one of the packages, I don't recall which. I noticed that the system monitor was not scrolling but it was not showing much CPU usage. I watched things for about a minute and did not see any change. I thought that something had crashed during the updates and I started to figure out what to do about that. Then I noticed that the system monitor had scrolled just a tiny amount - the system wasn't completely dead. So I watched it for a while longer and it scrolled another tiny amount. The mouse and cursor were operating normally so I fired up top in the terminal. This ran, although slowly, and it reported that most of the CPU time was going to gnome and to Xorg but no entry showed more than about 27% usage. (This system uses an Intel 950 with 8 processors.)

I spent a couple of minutes wondering what was going on and wondering what I should do. Suddenly, the system monitor started to scroll at normal speed and the graphs were typical. Apparently, whatever was wrong had cleared itself. The updates proceeded normally and finished. The system seemed to be running normally.

I was concerned that something may have been corrupted so I booted from an older release from a different partition. That version worked OK. I rebooted from the newest, updated version and the boot seemed to proceed normally up through the time when the system played the drumroll associated with login. However, instead of getting a login screen I had only the purple splash display with 5 red dots and nothing was changing; there was no login box. Since I could not log in, I reset the system and booted from an older release and this worked OK.

The next time that I booted the updated 10.10 release, it worked like it should. When the system was choked up, it was acting like it was extremely busy and did not have enough CPU time to update the display. But the cursor moved as it usually does, without hesitation or jerkiness.

I am not running the proprietary fglrx driver; whatever the 10.10 install provided is presumably what I am using. This system has two ATI HD4870 graphics cards because I want to run crossfire mode.

It seems like to me.. Fedora 13 has a longer update interval than Fedora 12.. I remember back in Fedora 12 I get security updates like every other 12 hrs.. (I know as with security patches the less the "better"(in some way))..

But I am still concerned.. security updates has been slow for me.

Is there a way of tracking updates without booting into the system. I am still on Karmic because of an annoying 'black screen at boot' bug. However i've got Lucid on a test partition waiting when the bug is fixed to upgrade my main system. I do not want to boot into my test system to check if there are any updates but track them online in some way to see when it's worth to boot to upgrade.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - System Crashing While Unattended After Updates

Aug 27, 2010

I've been running 10.04 on an old tower for a few weeks now. I've updated the software with no problems. Yesterday I let Update Manager go ahead with installing some updates. Now, the computer will crash while unattended. The screen stays off, and the machine doesn't respond to pings. I've found nothing of use in the syslog. The display going to sleep isn't the trigger, as it will turn off and come back before the issue presents. It seems to occur after 15 minutes or so of idle activity. Also, after an update a couple weeks ago, linux-headers and linux-image won't install cleanly. I'm going to try disabling power saving features to see if it continues occurring.

OpenSUSE :: Application Launcher Not Working After System Updates?

Sep 15, 2011

I have searched the net but can't seem to find answer for this issue. I am using Opensuse 11.4 with KDE Version 4.7.1 and kernel 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop on an Acer TravelMate 4200.I updated my system yesterday and since that update the default Application Launcher for KDE is not working, when you click on the launch icon you get the "Kickoff Application launcher" balloon dialog but nothing else happens. A sort of a work around for this issue is that I have found when the application launcher is switched to Classic Menu Style then the classic menu works without any problems. I would however like to use the default launcher and not the classic one as it has so much more functionality and is easier to use and navigate

CentOS 5 Hardware :: System Won't Boot After Recent Updates?

Jul 18, 2009

I did a yum update to install quite a few updates to my Centos 5.3 x86_64 system. Updates included kernel and xen which required a reboot. It must be a month or so since I last updated. The updates seemed to go fine - but when the machine restarts it goes through the bios screens which seem to detect all the hard drives etc - but then the word "Grub" appears at the bottom of the bios screen - and the system hangs. It doesn't appear to respond to keyboard input. The system is using linux raid in case that is relevant.

I am able to boot a centos5.2 live CD and look at the Logical volumes - and all appears in order to my untrained eye. I have also mounted the /dev/mdo as /tmp/bootx (boot volume) and had a quick look at /tmp/bootx/grub/grub.conf and /tmp/bootx/grub/device.map and again - I can't spot any obvious problem. I note that before the updates - my default boot was "1" and now it is "0" though this appears reasonable because the xen and non-xen images seem to be listed in the opposite order to earlier updates. I have set it to boot non-xen by default - and this has always worked in the past.

I realise that the recent updates may be a coincidence - and whatever is wrong may have occurred earlier. I cannot think of anything I have done which could have broken grub though. I can probably restore my boot volume to the state it was before the updates. I should have a backup from this morning - as luck would have it. Is this a safe thing to do - or do I need to restore both boot and root to keep them consistent. I would prefer not to restore the root system unless I have to - as this would cause some data loss. However I need advice as to whether yum and other things will get confused if the boot volume is restored in isolation.

I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.
