Ubuntu :: Show Long Filenames On Xfce Desktop?

Mar 21, 2010

I have recently been exploring the xfce wm, and like it a lot, except one big thing: I have a number of files and links on my desktop, but by default only the first part of the file name is shown unless the icon/file is selected

Ubuntu :: Unity Does Not Display Long Filenames On DVD?

May 14, 2011

I made a few data DVD's in OS/X 10.6.7 on my Macbook, using Burn URL...with the option "burn for PC and Mac".To my surprise when I load the DVD's in my ubuntu netbook, Unity displays the filenames abbreviated and renamed [COLOR="Navy"][U]. Some of the original filenames are similar, but unity restricts the filenames to about 22 ~ 50 characters. As such, I can't get a true (correct) file listing of the DVD's contents in Natty. I don't recall this happening with Karmic. Is this some problem with Nautilus?

FWIW, these were done using double layer 8.5 DVD-R disks. However, I did NOT select overburning, so the contents fit well into the allowed capacity, to permit inclusion of any hidden files. As soon as I load the disks on my Mac, I am able to see the full filename.

Ubuntu :: WinXP Truncates Long Filenames Saved On Ubu CD?

Apr 1, 2011

I have created a CD-Rom with pictures with long file names, up to 120 characters, using Brasero disk burner supplied with Ubu 10.10. I need Win XP to accept the long file names from the CD made in Ubuntu without truncating them. The WinXP HD is formatted NTFS.1) When I look at the CD made in Ubuntu with long file names,in Win XP, it shows the file names only in the 8.3 (DOS) format. When I open in Irfanview, the file names are also truncated. 2) When I email the pictures (with long file names) from Ubuntu and accept in XP, the photo file names (long) are seen unaltered. They can be stored, managed and used by viewing applications with the long file names.note: in XP, a short file name for a photo can be made to be very long, say 150 characters, and there seems to be no problem in manipulating it or viewing it

Software :: Create Iso Images With Long Filenames?

Jun 30, 2010

I have an old game, and I want to back up the disk because its old and a little scratched. I tried to use dd to record the disk, but it crashes with an "i/o error", which is strange because I can read the files on the cd without any problem.Luckily, I found all of the files from the disk already backed up on my hard drive. The problem is, when I create an iso image using mkisofs it abbreviates all of the filenames... which makes the game not... run. So how do I create an iso image with long filenames?

Ubuntu :: After Log In Takes Long Time To Show Desktop, Monitor Events At Log In Time?

May 24, 2011

It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.

However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?

beach---------20090808-110000.ogg
beach---------20090808-120000.ogg

It's like this:

name----------YYYYMMDD-hhmmss.ogg

Now Im splitting these hourly files into 1 minute files. I get then this output sofar properly:

beach---------20090808-110000_00.mp3
beach---------20090808-110000_01.mp3

Ubuntu :: Light Desktop - Install Desktop Command Only + Xfce?

Jul 19, 2010

Looking for a light desktop for a P3/512MB I installed xubuntu and I felt it slow. For a test, just tried installing lubuntu and it was so fast compared to xubuntu. The word here is I would like to move to xfce. Doing another test, I installed Debian Lenny + xfce and was way much faster than xubuntu.

My question: Can I install Ubuntu Desktop command only + xfce ? Is it going to be faster than xubuntu? Is there another recommendation for a debian based distro with xfce which runs faster than xubuntu?

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Ubuntu :: Very Long Time From Entering Password To Ready Desktop?

Jan 8, 2010

I have an unreasonably long time to wait from log in, to when my desktop is ready, it takes 40 seconds from hitting enter to seeing my files on the desktop, and about another 15 seconds from then to hearing the opening jingle. It used not to be this way, before it took less than 10 seconds, but about 4 days ago this time shot up suddenly, is there some way to diagnose whats causing this delay?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - XFCE Showing GNOME Desktop

Mar 27, 2011

I am the latest stable Ubuntu (10.10) on an Asus netbook and have both GNOME an XFCE installed. I started with Gnome and than installed XFCE because it works slightly faster on that slow computer. In the beginning everything was fine, but at some point. I don't know when (but it was so also when I was running ubuntu 9.10, before I upgraded to 10). This is what started to happen: when I log in and choose XFCE, I first see my XFCE desktop.

Then it flickers back and forth between my XFCE and Gnome desktop (but the top panel remains the XFCE one), and eventually it settles on the GNOME desktop (which has its own color, different icons in different positions, and its own context menus). The general desktop environment is XFCE: the desktop panel and the itmes on it are XFCE, but the desktop area itself is my GNOME desktop. What I can do to get rid of the display of the GNOME desktop when I choose to use XFCE?

Ubuntu :: New 11.04 Xfce Desktop - Not Unity Or Gnome 3?

May 31, 2011

Right now I am running 11.04, 10.04, 10.10. and I am using Unity, Gnome 2.32, and Xfce DE. Since 11.04 came out I have tried it with Unity, Gnome 3, Gnome 2.32 and Now Xfce. I have two internal hard drives and one USB hard drive that I use for testing. The two internal hd are running 10.10 and gnome 2.32 and the other running 11.04 and Unity. The USB hd now has 11.04 and Xfce.

After trying 11.04 with Unity and 11.04 with Gnome 3, I find them both designed wrong. They are very clumsy to use. (To many mouse movements and clicks) To many things need to be open and to many things to search for. I spend more time trying to do simple things that use to take me seconds to do in gnome 2.32.

Now that Gnome 3 is out, I believe gnome 2.32 is going away so I am looking for other avenues to go in. I have tried fedora and suse, but don't like the RPM's and there package manager. A few years ago I tried Xfce but liked gnome better.

This morning I decided to install it on a USB drive and give it a test drive. I find I really like it because I do things in seconds again. Things are easy to find and there is some things that are a lot like gnome 2.32. And one of the biggest things I like is it is so customisable. Also it boots very fast even from a USB drive. I believe I will be going to it as my main DE. I always liked Ubutnu and have use it since 2005 so I am glad I can stay with it even though I do not like or plan to use Unity or Gnome 3 in the future. This doesn't mean I will not change my mind, but as of now I do not like either one. Let see what will happen with the 11.10 release. Here are a few screen shots of 11.04 and Xfce.

Ubuntu :: XFCE Desktop To Load Up Automatically Without GDM

Jun 6, 2011

I'm making a Home Theatre OS, and I would like my XFCE ubuntu desktop to load up automatically without the use of GDM. This is because once remastered, the GDM cannot automatically log in until it's been set up to again. And the fact I removed all the GNOME icons which took up 50MB of space, so now the GDM interface is all glitchy xD

It basically involves removing GDM, logging in (the login and password are both 'media'), then having an automatic login command to run 'startx'. I've removed GDM on my test environment, and so far managed get in manually by logging in and typing startx. (On that note, do I even need a username and password? Can't I just use the password only for su?)

I installed Xubuntu 10.10, fresh i don't configure or installed another program, i only installed nvidia drivers (I have a Geforce 9600 GT video card). The entire operating system, and xfce 4.6 was working fine. After, I make an upgrade to xfce 4.8, and when i loged on, everything loaded ok: xfce 4.8 version is working fine, the panels loaded and i can add items.

But there is a problem: My wallpaper image doesn't appear on desktop (only brown solid color), it doesn't show icons, i can't change wallaper in configuration panel (i can add an image but it does not appear in desktop), when I plug in a pendrive usb icon does no appear. And when I right click on the deadspace on the background the right click menu does not come up.

When i open desktop folder in thunar there is information, but icon files does not appear in desktop I thing that maybe is a setting that i can solve typing something in terminal, but i don't know what, i searched in google and in this forum and i found only one post but not related to xfce 4.8 and it was not useful[URL]...

pressing ALT - F2 I am able to start commands, eg Thunar shows up displaying all volumes, files and even NFS remote drives. my conclusion is that everything works except the desktop...

how I can start the XFCE desktop environment so I can use the GUI?
