Debian Configuration :: Prevent Squeeze From Being Like The Borg?

May 28, 2010

Alright, first Squeeze wouldn't create an initial RAM disk even with "--initrd" specified. Now I don't need one and it's creating one for me even though I don't want one! How do I stop this? I'm beginning to feel like I am using Windows in the sense that it's doing things on its own. Don't make me a RAM disk unless I say so!

I'm trying to prevent GDM/Gnome from turning the screen off prior to login. It's current behavior, under 3.14, slowly fades the screen out and then enters DPMS mode after 10 minutes.I have zeroed out the following dconf settings, under both root and user, but the default behavior persists.

org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay

When I go to Thunar file manager, and click browse network, I'm presented with a "Windows Network" shortcut. When clicked it says: Failed to open "Windows Network". Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze XFCE Wicd And Wpa Encryption?

Jun 7, 2011

The laptop runs Debian Squeeze XFCE installed from the Live iso (uname -a gives 2.6.32-5-686 as the kernel) and has Wicd 1.7.0 for network management and uses the ipw2100 wifi firmware/drivers. It connects fine using WEP encryption at home and to unencrypted connections found in a couple of public areas. I have had one problem with a WEP encrypted connection in a cafe (got through encryption, but could not get an IP address. There are workarounds which I will try next time I have coffee there When changing my router to use WPA2, I get 'bad password' errors. There is quite a literature on 'bad password errors' and Wicd and kernel 2.6.32, however a lot of the pages are contradictory. The Wicd log showed this...

2011/06/07 17:25:59 :: WPA_CLI RESULT IS ASSOCIATING
2011/06/07 17:26:00 :: wpa_supplicant authentication may have failed.
2011/06/07 17:26:00 :: connect result is Failed

[code]...

I'm fine using WEP at home, but I need to connect out and about as well and meet WPA2 connections in some locations

Debian Configuration :: Jessie 8.2 - GUI Update-manager XFCE Notifier

Jan 1, 2016

Since update-manager was removed from Debian Jessie, I am looking for something similar or a way to install update-manager for 8.2. I would like a GUI.

I have tried gnome-packagekit, but some of the commands don't appear to work or it seems incomplete and I don't know of a way to test to make sure that it is working.

Other sites recommended to use smartpm. However, I cannot seem to find the plugin xfce4-smartpm-plugin in [Xfce Goodies] that would work as a notifier.

Unattended-upgrades does not meet my specifications, because to my knowledge there is no GUI configuration for this.

Though Debian Jessie is a great distro, I am finding it difficult to recommend to some newer users because it does lack a GUI updater/notifier at this time.

Debian Configuration :: Wheezy Xfce 4.8 VERY SLOW First Thunar Startup

May 16, 2011

I upgraded my main PC's Xfce 4.6 to Xfce 4.8 this morning.Now, every time I start Thunar for the first time after a new boot, it takes about 30 seconds to appear, and then about 10 seconds later, a second instance of it appears.After that, Thunar appears instantly every time I start it during that same session. But if I shut-down or restart my PC, Thunar again takes about 30 seconds to start up, and a second instance of it appears about 10 seconds later.

Google searches seem to indicate that people running other distros are also experiencing this problem. On advice in a different forum, I deleted the ~/.config/Thunar folder and restarted my PC, but that didn't help -- it created a new Thunar folder, but the long delay and the double-Thunars are still there every time I run Thunar for the first time in a session.

Debian Multimedia :: Xfce 4.6 Won't Remember Desktop Settings

Mar 3, 2011

My Googling about this said to make sure xfdesktop was running. These settings are from when I used Xfce before in Ubuntu 8.04. (My /home dir is on its own partition and I like to keep all my config files for apps I have used and might want to again.)I suspect I might need to delete a config file but I'd rather not undo all of the other settings that do work. Which? Or is it something else?

Debian Multimedia :: No Wallpaper / Desktop Icons - Xfce/XDM On Squeeze?

Apr 10, 2010

I have been an Ubuntu user for the past two years and have recently made the switch to Debian, so while not new to GNU/Linux or Debian-like distributions I am still learning on many fronts. Installing squeeze directly caused issues with my Wi-Fi for some reason, so I installed lenny and performed aptitude safe-upgrade (full-upgrade kept breaking the system), and took care of stray packages manually to get a working squeeze system. My desktop environment of choice is Xfce, using XDM.

Ever since the upgrade, both the login prompt and the actual desktop have had a black background with no icons or right-click menu. I am guessing that the issue is a daemon that should be running but isn't, although I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting the issue, which is why I came here. I've uploaded at of my desktop here Right-clicking in the black space doesn't do anything, and changing my wallpaper settings is ineffective.It's not a huge problem for me, as everything else in the system appears to work, but I would like to figure out what the problem is, fix it, and maybe learn something about Debian in the process.

Ubuntu :: In XFCE - Prevent Mouse Cursor From Defaulting To Center Of Screen?

Jul 16, 2010

I have a machine running XFCE in a "kiosk" environment. The machine normally runs without a keyboard or mouse, and I remote control it via VNC and SSH.

When the machine starts up, the mouse cursor sits in the center of the screen. I don't want to plug in a mouse or use VNC to move the mouse to the bottom-right corner so that it is not visible, so is there a way to hide the mouse cursor or tell it to move to the lower right when X starts? It would be even cooler if the mouse could be disabled or hidden when no mouse is connected, but re-enabled when someone plugs in a mouse, but that's probably asking too much.

Debian Configuration :: XFCE Logout Doesn't Completely Logout Of System / Solution For This?

But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.
