Ubuntu :: Sh: Javac: File Not Found
Jun 11, 2010
sh:javac: file not found .I want to try to run java on linux but am having problems. I downloaded the Scite text editor and the java jdk (self installer) from java.com. Created the simple helloworld program in the text editor and used ctrl + f7 to try to comiple it but just get the message sh: javac: file not found. After numerous attempts decided to try to uninstall java and start from scratch again. So I downloaded the jdk self installer again and typed in (sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin) but now get this:
dbd@dbd-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin
[sudo] password for dbd:
Reading package lists... Done
[code]....
Am I using the right test editor? Are there any tutorials I can follow for using java on linux?

When I try to compile some Java code on Ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6+) using make and a Makefile.
I get an error indicating that the make utility cannot execute the java compile command (javac).
The error reads: /bin/bash: line 6: .: /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac: cannot execute binary file
I am executing make as root. I have enabled permissions on all directories in the path /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac and on javac itself.
I get this error whether using a jdk installed via ubuntu apt-get, or whether I install the jdk myself. And I get it using either Java 1.5 or 1.6
My machine has an 80386 processor. I notice the make utility is built for i686-pc-linux-gnu
However, I can manually compile using javac.
I can compile calling javac from within a bash script.
I can compile using the java compiler gcj from the command line: gcj --main=HelloWorld HelloWorld.java -o HelloWorld.exe
But I cannot compile java code from the makefile. Any reasons why I might be getting this error?

I thought that setting up the PATH variable was a must if we wanted to use java or javac commands on linux (preferably in the bashrc file), but I am able to use these commands anywhere without setting up the PATH variable.. Similarly, without specifying . in the CLASSPATH variable (in fact, not specifying the CLASSPATH variable at all), I am able to access class files in the same directory. How is it possible ?

do this slackbuild require the JDK package?
I've got a compile error which says that 'javac' is missing.. this file seems to be only in the JDK package (and not in the JRE).
Do it's correct? No problem to install the JDK ..

However, when I look into the file it is actually blank saying something like "It works! This is the default web page for this server" which can't be correct since that is not what Aro2220.com actually displays.
Furthermore, when I try to wget files I've put on the server for myself it returns a 404, file not found.

So I got my DOS 6.0 entry in... but Grub reports file not found. I assume grub is fine, and DOS6 was working and I haven't done anything to it. Needless to say, I'm guessing that I'm telling grub to look in the wrong place for the dos bootloader. Here's what I have in my 40_Custom file:
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
menuentry "MS-DOS 6.0" {
insmod chain
insmod vfat
search --fs-uuid --set 3c34-9666
chainloader +1
}
The "vfat" and uuid of "3c34-9666" were reported by using sudo blkid Do I need to set the root? I thought the uuid took care of that?

Iv been using ubuntu on my laptop for just over a year now and thought it about time my desktop got the same. I cant get rid of the vista section of the disk because of things i have on there so a friend gave me a spare 80gb hard drive to have a play with it and go from there. So first of all installed unbuntu 10.10 on the hard drive alls fine i can boot into both vista and ubuntu, i then want to install backtrack 4, so i booted the backtrack disc and off we went, i split the 80gb hard drive in two and installed backtrack to one section, now i cant boot to anything other than backtrack. I got an option for ubuntu although this does look different now (showing up as 'ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic-pae') when i go to this option i get the message "error 15:file not found" I also have the option for other operating system, i get this message when i choose this option "error 11: Unrecognized device string"

My only workaround is to select "computer" - this is now the only option on "places" that does not deliver a "file not found error" When I select computer I can still access the contents of my hard drive.

i am a ubuntu user for about a year now. i ok with most things. but ive noticed the only things i can use are ones that are supplied for me. so i been trying to figure out how to install new programs not just from synaptic and the ubuntu add/remove. my issue is i have ubuntu 11.04 and i cant get my extracted tar.gz file to be recognized in terminal.
i first put cd home/nicholas/desktop/ndiswrapper-1.56 then nothin it just says no file or directory found. now i thought this was supposed to be a basic comand. am i missing something? is there a new way to write it now that were using 11.04 and not 10.10?

Ok so I have found the help doc in the ubuntu community spot and it says to run the following command,
Code:
grep -i switcheroo /boot/config-2.6.*
And I do that and nothing happend, so i though ok maybe i missed something and moved to the next step to see if the switch file is there and I do,
Code:
ls -l /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
Says the file can not be found, and according to the post on the community help spot VGA_Swicheroo is not enabled, well my problem is how do i enable it and use it?

When I attempt to boot into Ubuntu 9.10, I get the error: "Error 15: File not found" I know the reason for this - I deleted it - Doh. A latest upgrade told me I didn't have enough room in the boot partition to install the latest files, so I thought it would be a marvellous idea to remove the old stuff, to give it some room. I obviously deleted something that I needed by mistake. I was using synaptic to do the remove & thought I would be safe. A good learning experience.
In grub menu I have options: Kernel: 2.6.31-15 - generic and also its recovery option, both of which get the same error. (It's a dual boot with XP as the original os). Ideally I'd just like to get the latest working kernel and put it somewhere appropriate, rather than do a full install. Is this possible and if so how? I have a separate boot partition (in dev/sda5), swap (sda7) and Linux (sda6).

Just before the computer boots into the grub menu, I noticed a message on the prompt saying that a file was not found. I had reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 prior to this. Maybe the grub was not configured properly but I don't know how to fix or find the missing file. I also noticed that I don't have /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

My problem now is: After booting my laptop, Ubuntu doesn't load and i'm stuck in a GRUB command prompt and not sure what to do. If i type "boot" I get "error: no loaded kernel"Here is how I got there:1. I ran 9.1 healthily until I was prompted to do an upgrade. I ran the upgrade but some packages weren't authenticated so I ran a partial upgrade. 2. I reboot but I'm faced with "Error 15: File not found". After some research and going through the forums, I thought I found the solution by following these instructions to copy the GRUB files from the Live CD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD)3. Once I completed this, I'm now stuck at a grub> prompt when rebooting (the error 15 has disappeared). (the screen header informs me i'm dealing with "GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu5"Any thoughts on what I might have done wrong? From my reading today, I might have installed GRUB2 (even though Grub legacy would have been appropriate?). What is the best way out?
