Ubuntu :: Set A Program As Default?
Jan 7, 2010
I just got Karmic running tonight. I need to know how I set a program as default. For instance, if I select a photo or a song and I want a different program than what comes up. Also, is there a user manuel for this os?

Is there a default sfv checker program? I saw there were a few sfv checker programs in the repository, I just don't want to install another one if I already have one.

When I plugged my phone into my laptop, I was prompted to select a program to launch by default when I plug in again. I selected Picasa for managing my photos. Since selecting that though, I've decided I'd rather have Banshee Media Player open for managing my music. However, I cannot figure out how to change the default. I've searched all over the internet, but cannot seem to find a solution.

I installed Freeradius using Yum and then RPM, where the heck does the default program folder get installed and how do you even find it. I did a find . -name free and I come up with nothing. In Windows, I can go to a program respoistory, download a program to the default directory or choose one, launch the installation, and more often than not the program and most of it's components are installed in the 'Programs' directory. It is a pretty consistent, neat, and organized process. Can someone relate how Linux works in comparison? I am not knocking Linux, just trying to understand if there is a consistent method to how it downloads, installs, and stores applications.

I have this problem, however the solution given there is outdated- There is no such menu entry (I tried to see if it was disabled, but it wasn't in the menu editor either).
So how would I do this in Karmic?
Edit: I found it. As a reference: Open Nautilus, go to Edit-> Preferences -> "Media" tab -> Photos -> Your choice.

I am trying to compile a program with mpicc. To compile I use:
CC=/usr/bin/mpicc ./configure
However mpicc's default C compiler is gcc 4.4.2 and I need to use 4.0.0 which I have installed in another directory. I do not (nor can get) root privileges so I cannot edit mpicc's default compiler. Is there an option I can set while configuring?

I have a CentOS server running at [a link which has been moderator deleted] (a text-based game I'm building) which is displaying the default welcome page. I'll quote some of the things that page says:
Quote: "Apache 2 Test Page powered by CentOS This page is used to test the proper operation of the Apache HTTP server after it has been installed. If you can read this page it means that the Apache HTTP server installed at this site is working properly."
"If you are the website administrator: You may now add content to the directory /var/www/html/. Note that until you do so, people visiting your website will see this page and not your content. To prevent this page from ever being used, follow the instructions in the file /etc/httpd/conf.d/welcome.conf. You are free to use the images below on Apache and CentOS Linux powered HTTP servers.

I had originally followed the advice at Mauriat Miranda's Fedora Nvidia Driver Install Guide [URL] for installing nvidia's display driver on my HP Pavilion system 64 bit running Fedora 11. I had used his first method which just installs the relevant kernel module kmod-nvidia from RPMFusion. He also suggested an alternate method: obtaining Nvidia's installer NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run and using that. I downloaded it from Nvidia, but I didn't run it.
I recently lost X. This had happened previously after a kernel upgrade, and I just used grub to boot an earlier kernel to recover X, and then installed the upgraded kernel module to fix the problem. But this time, being deeply involved in something else, I panicked slightly, and, using dumb terminal mode I ran the Nvidia installer. It asked me to make various choices and in response to my answers, it decided to compile a new kernel module. This recovered X, but I then compounded things by installing the updated kmod-nvidia.
I realized afterwards that using both methods might create some conflicts, but X seemed to run properly. (I can tell because graphics in the program Maple doesn't work properly with the default drivers provided by Fedora 11.) Since then, when I restart nvidia, I get.

I started a torrent earlier today and tried to use the default program "transmission". Never liked it all that much but, first thing it did was to present me with a list of the files in the torrent I was trying to dl. About 40 files and I only wanted to grab one of the files. For some reason, I have to unclick 39 files so that I can leave one clicked. There doesn't seem to be a "un-select-all" tool perhaps there is a hidden selector? Or do the developers of the program think that I really do need to download all the files?

I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. Because it said:Quote: For example, you can add an entry to boot another OS as01_otheros, 11_otheros, etc, depending on the position you want it to occupy inthe menu; and then adjust the default setting via /etc/default/grub. But then i found a file 40_custom that said:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0

I changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?

I was using ubuntu 10.04 till yesterday.. and due to hdd crash i have changed my hdd.
while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.
