View 6 Replies View RelatedIs there any program in Ubuntu that can open .docx files natively? I know that open office can open .doc files, but I need a program that can open .docx files. It also has to be able to read the embedded data, such as text themes and bibliography data. Conversion is no good. I have been using Office 2007 through Crossover, but for some reason it can only have one window open at a time, which severely limits what I can do.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi cannot seem to find a proper way to make Java my default application to open .jar files. I just made a new Debian 8.3 install on my laptop HP Pavilion G6 and the default application for opening .jar files is the Archive Manager. But when i go to "Open with.." section on right-clicking the .jar file, i get no JRE or JDK option to choose. I just installed the openjdk 7. I can manually run them from the bash, but it would be much more convenient if i just double-clicked it. Here is what i get when i run several commands in the bash :

OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.95-b01, mixed mode)

I want to change the application that opens my mp3 files.
At present if I double click an mp3 it opens in the movie viewer for some reason. I know I can use "open with..." to get a file to open in Rythymbox instead, but I have over 800 mp3 files and want to change the default for all of them.
I recently installed Banshee and would like to set it as my default music player. Currently, when I plug in my iPod, Rythmbox auto loads and then Banshee cannot access the device. Is there a way to go about changing this setup so when I plug in the iPod, it's Banshee that loads it and not Rythmbox?

View 3 Replies View RelatedActually I want to log a bug but I don't really know what package to log it against. The problem is that by default Pango is choosing the AR PL UMing CN as the font to render Japanese text when the current font doesn't have Japanese glyphs. But AR PL UMing CN is a Chinese font, so Chinese glyphs for kanji characters (e.g., 覚) are displayed. This is jarring and confusing for Japanese readers.
This situation mostly arises when you have mixed English and Japanese text. Some applications (for instance Firefox) will allow you to select a font for Asian text. Thus if the text contains only Asian characters it will use the font you select, rather than what Pango would have selected. But if it is a mix of English and Japanese, you end up with the wrong glyphs.
Other environments (like gnome-terminal, or a gedit) have difficulties as well. Since the primary interface requires mono spaced roman characters you run into difficulty selecting fonts. Most Japanese fonts only have proportional roman characters. This means that if use a nice roman font and use Japanese text (for instance file names), you end up with Chinese glyphs. What I want is a mechanism that will work across all of Gnome for selecting the font I want to use for Chinese characters. That way I can choose either Japanese or Chinese glyphs.
I realize this is low priority. It only bugs me a little, but many of my Japanese colleagues are put off from using Ubuntu because they are confused by the Chinese glyphs that pop up on my screen from time to time. As I said, I'd like to file a bug, but I'm not sure against what package...

I was able to convert a Real Estate Firm from using Microsoft OSS to OpenSuse 11.2.The Real estate agents in the firm are pleased and some are not but it's the cost of doing business and saving money.I am at a cross road or should I say I have come to a bump in the road. Most of the agents create their flyers and signs in Microsoft Publisher, I tried Open Office 3.X and I'm unable to open or edit the files in question.Do have any suggestions or could you point me in the direction of a solid solution that will help me either convert the files or a program that can be used with-in OpenSuse 11.2 that can edit the files

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had a problem with libreoffice - it won't open files. That is,File/Open doesn't bring up a dialog box. File/New works and so does using a filename on the command line when starting libreoffice. Now there's good news and bad news. The good news is that with help from some libreoffice-users folks, I now know what caused this and I have a workaround. The bad news is that it's a bug in Libreoffice and I need some help testing other versions, please. So here's the steps to reproduce:
(1) Login to a Gnome session (KDE may also work, dunno)
(2) Start libreoffice
(3) Select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
(4) Observe in that page a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
(5) Ensure the checkbox is blank (not selected)
(6) Save settings and check that File/Open pops up a dialog box.
(7) Quit libreoffice and log out of the session
(8) Login to an LXDE session
(9) Start libreoffice
(10) Select File/Open
*(11) Check whether a dialog box appears
(12) If not, select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
*(13) Check whether there is a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
If your system does NOT open a dialog box in step 11 and does NOT have a checkbox in step 13, you are seeing the same bug as me.I'm using opensuse 11.3.
