I'm trying to install Fedora 11 x86_64 on system with Adaptec U160 and 2 Ultra160 HD. It is not part of a network and iSCSI is not wanted. But the installer keeps selecting iSCSI automatically and won't let me change it. I try to do a "replace linux system" with my own partition scheme-which preserves the partitions already on this drive. I eventually have to exit the installer.

Im having this issue, when i install fedora 14 with the dvd image by usb it installs successfully, but its forcing the PAE kernel, if i remember correctly the PAE kernel is meant for systems with 4gb ram or better, i have an emachines w3115 with upgraded ram to 2gb ram (not sure if it matters or not but its ??dual channeled??) dual booting windows xp mce and fedora 14. is there a way to get around fedora forcing the PAE kernel at the install process?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Linux, tried Ubuntu, had slow boot problems, tried openSUSE 11.1, still have slow boot problems. The issue seems to be that the ata.0 device is slow to respond (ERROR= -16), the boot system forces a hard reset, then a soft reset, configures for UDMA 133, says the drive is ready, then does it again, three times, and then configures the drive for UDMA 100. It's a brand new Western Digital Caviar drive, and windowsXP likes it just fine. Once SUSE boots, everything seems to work just fine. I thought the problem might be with the drive jumpers, so I reset them from cable detect to master/single. No change in the problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Xubuntu 10.04 on a new desktop and I have immediately begun to have issues. Within 10 minutes of installation, I had begun to look around to change the window 'theme' settings. I was scrolling through the themes and BOOM the system blanks out and forces me back to the login. At first I was thinking it was no big deal, but as it turns out, it will not let me back it.Basically, I use my credentials, it appears to login, it goes to a black screen with the cursor at the top left and then sends me back to login like nothing happened.

It only has 146GB available for RAID1 so I created a 500GB iSCSI LUN on my NAS device on the network and am really confused how I can attach my Debian to the iSCSI LUN I created. Right now the OS is installed all locally on the machine but I would like the iSCSI LUN to be the /home directory for mail storage. Is this possible or do I need to mount the LUN to a newly created folder / mount point that is locally attached?

I have a SCSI disk so I'm suspicious preupgrade is having trouble accessing it? That prefix "hd" looks suspicious, should that be:

What measuring system does partitioning step in Debian installer use - metric or JEDEC? I.e. it uses MB, which in JEDEC means 1024^2 bytes, and in metric means 1000^2 bytes.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio laptop, which I am trying to make dual boot and in big trouble. These are the steps I completed.
1. Backedup all my important data on a USB drive.
2. Prepared a Ubuntu LiveUSB and booted in Ubuntu.
3. Used GParted tool to repartition my hard drive (320GB) as follows,
Partition 1 NTFS (Primary) ~50GB
Partition 2 NTFS (Primary) ~100GB
Partition 3 EXT4 (Extended)
Root EXT4 (Logical) ~20GB
Swap Linux-swap ~2GB
Home EXT4 (Logical) ~129GB
4. Accepted all these changes in GParted and restarted the machine.
5. Used VISTA installation disk to start VISTA installation on 1st NTFS partition (Partition 1).
-Everything was fine until now -
6. The VISTA installer took a really long time (around half hour) just showing copying files with 0% completion status message.
7. Somehow I got impatient and tried to cancel the installation.
Now, the problem is the system does not boot up even with my USB LiveCD or Windows VISTA installer. It just shows blank screen and nothing appears.
I would like to make a bootable Ubuntu system on a USB stick from a full install, so I can update the packages/kernel etc, and I would also like to have the ability to Install ubuntu from the USB stick onto other computers. What package allows you to run the installer that is found on the LiveCD?
Also, is it possible to have a Ubuntu installer that uses updated packages rather than the LiveCD so they are current when installed rather than the release packages to save on the download/updating time?

In my understanding, the way /proc/scsi/scsi gets populated, /proc/paritions also gets populated in the same fashion. i.e. the description for first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi can be seen in the first entry of /proc/partitions and same for rest.
So, With this assumption, in my project, I used to relate first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partitions to get its total size and same for all entries.
But, I observed some differences in following scenario, where
1) The first 4 entries in /proc/scsi/scsi are SAN luns attached to my system and for which the actual device names in /dev/ are sda,sdb,sdc and sdd.
2) The last 4 entries are the internal HDDs on same system. In /dev/, their respective device names are sde,sdf,sdg & sdh.

But in /proc/partitions, the device order is different.
You can see their respective sizes in /proc/partition output as well.
So, my question is, in this particular scenario, I can't relate the first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partition. i.e. scsi0:00:00:00 is not /dev/sde, because it is actually /dev/sda.
It seems that my assumption is wrong in this scenario.
Is there any way or mechanism to figure out actual device name for an entry in /proc/scsi/scsi in /dev/ directory?
How can my application should relate /proc/scsi/scsi entries with their respective device names and sizes?
What is the correct way to allow two servers to use the same file system on a SAN using iSCSI?Is it GFS on the two servers?

The thing is that I'd like non-root users to be able to run this script, which in turn needs root to /proc/scsi/scsi
Ubuntu in Windows 7 (64 bits) File system installed using Wubi I got Ubuntu 10.04 LTS intalled using Wubi. That means Ubuntu resides inside Windows file / folder system. It also means Ubuntu does not have its own partition. Here is what I found out:
1) It cannot detect wireless network unlike Win 7 on this same laptop. However, when I plug in ethernet cable, it was able to detect it. Is there a fix this problem?
2) I cannot see Windows folders. How do access windows folder from Ubuntu side and vice versa?
3) I forgot to set the disk space for Ubuntu during install and I think the default is 17 GB.Would this cause me problems? If so, what do I need to do? How do I expand the disk space for Ubuntu?
Is it possible to install two NICs during an installation from CD? I tried and failed yesterday. The eth0 would have a static ip address 192.168.0.11 and would be used for Internet/network whereas eth1 would have a static ip address of 192.168.2.81 and would be used for connection to the ISCSI system (DROBOPRO). Oh yes, it's Ubuntu 10.04 Server version.
Install asks me to choose one of the two devices for configuration - I tried to be clever and set up one then the other but it didn't work, although the ISCSI subsystem was clearly working when I set up eth1 because the DROBO kicked into life as soon as I entered the IP address - communication was taking place. Thinking that my fudge had worked, I continued to complete the installation only to find that neither network interface worked on reboot.
we are working on a project which uses Fedora as the operating system. we are running our deliverables on up to 20+ machines of identical specifications, we have perused the whole package list (presented in the standard installer) and have a confirmed list of modules we wish to include, and we wish to know if there's anyone out there who is interested in writing a scripted installer which can be ran on the machines to perform unattended installation of F14/F15 on all the machines. a partial re-branding of the installer and boot screen would also be needed (to put it simple : adding the logo/some text of our project to existing Fedora brandings, while making sure the user will know the nice Fedora experience is embedded within in whole). please reply if you have interest in it and the know-how, and how much you wish to be reimbursed for your effort.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI currently run windows 7, I am interested in dual booting, upon burning the .iso to the disc using imgburn, I had a few problems with the installer when I ran the live disc, I'll assume it was personal causes, I googled several things for a simple solution, I went with using the Disk Manager in Windows 7 to shrink my current partition which I only have one which is running Win 7 on 140 GB's, using the shrink function in windows I unallocated 20 GB of that partition, I used this option because the option in F11's installer would not work at all. I rebooted from disc, loading the distro, and run the installer via desktop choose the use free space option and I got an error crash when it tries to execute this option which isnt the only time I got this error bug causing me to exit the installer, I copied the debug information in the details, I hope this is something simple because F11 isn't worth this much time.

i try to boot off the cd, it loads vmlinz and init.rd, anaconda starts loading.it mounts the temp filesystem and freezes. i can't choose how to install or anything. nothing comes up graphically.

Well I did some research then and found out EasyBCD 2.0 support booting from .iso files.Tought thats gonna be good idea to give a try but it just doesnt work I keep getting "grub>" or something like that.Another useful tool I found was "Unetbootin" which I saw can be boot from Hard Drive too.With this I get some blue screen loading some white thing and then "bang" error appears that "Sleeping forever". I guess its related that I boot off from HDD.If anyone have any good ideas how should I get it working or manually boot kernel in that "grub>" part ( which I tried but said file not found)
I am trying to install Fedora Core 10 64bit on my Desktop... i've been running FC7 on it until now.The installer continues until the Anaconda GUI, and I am able to click next on language select, then when I click to select "U. I have this laptop that I just reformatted in hopes of doing a dual boot between XP and FC4. It is an Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (the Wal-Mart special). I reformatted the drive; the Windows partition is in NTFS and then I have a 10GB partition in FAT32 for Linux. When I try to install FC4, the disk boots into the installer, then it tells me that it does not recognize any hard drives (the disk in this laptop is a Hitachi HTS541680J9SA00). It asks me if I want to load any drivers, and I tried a few and still no success. Any way, after it goes through that, it tries to start anaconda and after that launches it goes to a black screen and nothing happens. So, did I do anything wrong in the Windows install that won't allow the disk to be found? The XP disk only allows a format in NTFS, otherwise I would have done FAT32 on the whole drive. Second, is the anaconda problem something related to the HDD issue, or does anyone think that it may be a separate issue?
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen using the manual partitioner on the fedora 11 installer on the live cd, both for 64 bit and 32 bit, it will not allow me to create a new partition. I understand that I have four primary partitions and it cannot have more than that, so I tried deleting one of the partitions, then creating the new ext4 partition for F11. It still fails and gives me the same bugsee attachment)
how to read this, especially since there is so much there. I see at the top it says that there are 4 primary partitions, could it possibly still be seeing 4 primary partitions when trying to create the new one, even though I am deleting one of them? Other than this, I truly have no idea what else I can do.

I tried to install Fedora 11 on computer with Windows XP as the primary partition, and Fedora 11 as a logical partition. The version of anaconda that ships with Fedora 11 has a bug in the graphical installer, the GUI. The text version of the installer starts up but does not let the user use logical partitions.I have installed Fedora 6 using the graphical installer, and logical partitions.Is there a new version of anaconda for Fedora 11? or Could I use the Fedora 6 anaconda to install Fedora 11?
