Ubuntu :: Script Display A Nice Little Graphical Thing To Indicate That The Script Has Finished Running?
Sep 9, 2010
I've been starting to have a play with scripting, I'm still learning the basics though.I have one little question that. I want to have the script display a nice little graphical thing to indicate that the script has finished running. preferably some sort of customizable message with an OK button to close it. Even better if it looks proper as though it was always an Ubuntu app.

I'm planning on getting an HDTV soon, and I'd like to be able to hook it up to my computer so that I can watch movies on it through my computer. I don't want to have dual monitors in the traditional sense where my desktop is spread across two screens. Rather, I just want my desktop to appear exactly the same on both my monitor and TV.
Is this possible? And if so, what would be the best way to go about doing this? My video card has two DVI ports, so I was planning on running a cable from the unused port to my TV and using a DVI-VGA adapter. Or would I be better off getting a TV with an S-video port, which I also have on my card, and connecting it that way

I just moved back to openSUSE after spending almost 2 years in ubuntu-land. What happened to the fonts? Why are they so ugly? To me it looks like they are poorly rendered. I installed openSUSE 11.2 on another computer to confirm the problem... it persists. I took some screenshots to compare my settings.
Ubuntu: [URL]
openSUSE: [URL]
The second screenshot doesn't show, but both settings are using the exact same fonts and the same size. (Except the Window title font). From those two, it should be very clear that Ubuntu renders them more nicely. I don't want to start an UbuntuopenSUSE flame.. How to make my openSUSE machine display nice fonts.. ?

All my applications seem to be running at nice of 19 except bash and daemons which are running at 0. My understanding is that the default nice value is either 0 or 10 (forget which) but not 19.Ran search in /etc/sysconfig/ editor and no results for "nice" and looked at the bashrc files and again no lines contain "nice".

I have installed fedora 8 on my cPCI based system [URL]. It seems to have 256MB RAM. Once I login as root in text editor mode, I typed init 5. But the graphical display appears very blur. I changed the monitor, but still same result. One more observation I made is, after 10mins it used to enter into screen saver mode (blank screen), but when I pressed some button, the graphical display appeared with full colors. But now even this is not happening. The system just goes into some state after init 5, where my the display goes blank and even the keyboard doesn't work.

I need to display a message graphically using a messagebox or textbox through bash script. However the message should be keep changing every 4 secs . I input the message from a file and use "gxmessage" to display it .
I do not like this solution and it looks ugly too , because it is visible that the message box is getting killed and forked every time..Can't I use the same gxmessage message box for all the messages just by putting new messages and hence refreshing the same box.Any idea , anything other than gxmessage will do , if a solution is somewhere else.

I have a system with 2 hard drives (Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP) on them. Grub allows me to select which system to boot to.
Ubuntu 10.10 has stopped working (not loading gnome graphical interface) for some reason.
I can boot to a command line (after many errors on screen). When I try the command "gnome-terminal" I get: "Failed to Parse Arguments: Cannot open display:"

I have been reading others experiences of similar Low-Display 800x600 minimal color issues on G4 and other PPC computers, Thought I had it close but still can't get it really gworking as it should, I believe it is all to do with the framebuffers (that don't exist and I don't know how to make these files and keep them on reboot. mine is a really old G3 with the Slot Load R128 Rage ATI graphics, 40 GB HDD, 256 MB RAM,740/750 processor.

Usually I open 5 terminals. And since each of those 5 terminals prints it's tile as: "username@username-laptop: ~" It becomes very hard to see what is what. So, I would like my terminal to always change it's title automatically to the program that I am currently using.
So, if I type "irssi", the title of my gnome-terminal-window, should change to: "irssi" for example.

I am connecting to remote Linux PCs via ssh, to update software and do other tasks. I want to send a notification to the remote PCs screen (eg, "Do not run program X, it is being updated now"), so the users do know what is happening.
Is there a reverse way for ssh -X host so I can connect to a remote Linux machine and run notify-send and it appears on the other display?

All seems well in Ubuntu printer setup and drivers. Cups, hpijs hplip etc., system finds printer and sets it up and from system/administration/printing the printer shows up with the right description Hp deskjet d2600 on local host. when I try to print I get message "started job" and another message "finished job" but nothing prints. The log Var/log/cups/error_log shows only one thing that I think is wrong "cupsd authorize:no authentication data provided". my user name john and one other Andy (I installed) show up in lp group. I could attach the whole error_log file if it would help. I am new to Linux but love it. I used Windows NT for years. I am the administrator on the box. Don't know what to try next.

I'm not a Linux noob, but I am far from guru. I'm running a single board computer with a slightly customized Debian Etch (customized by the SBC vendor). No Gnome/KDE/X installed. My application is a control application which uses SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) to paint some basic graphics on the VGA. I need to run it as root because the application calls iopl() to access an IO port.If I run my application manually from the command line, life is sweet. From Googling around, I found http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28, and hence I:1) Created a script in /etc/init.d2) Executed "update-rc.d scriptName defaults" to link the script into the boot sequenceAll very straightforward. My application starts at boot. But when I try to SSH/SFTP into the SBC, I get "Connection refused". So I can't manage the SBC anymore, and this is a big problem. I am not sure if it's relevant, but my application starts before the SSH daemon. My script looked like:
case "$1" in
start)
echo "Starting my application"

I'm trying to put zero in one hd (60GB) toshiba. So i use the command sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdx. I learned to see the status and now after 24hrs the status is:
Code:
111108189+0 records in
111108189+0 records out
56887392768 bytes (57 GB) copied, 85620,7 seconds, 664 kb/s
So, when do i know when the task is complete? I thought that when reached about 55GB has stop. Because one hd with 60GB has actualy 55GB.

So I'm teaching myself some scripting to try and create a fairly simple photobooth type affair... I've got gphoto2 playing fairly nicely with my canon, and imagemagick taking that output and rearranging it to a vertical format...
EDIT:
*smacks forehead*
Fairly simple to do what I needed initially: Code: feh -FZ -D 1 --cycle-once $COUNTDOWN & sleep 2 &
feh -FZ -D 20 --cycle-once $SMILE This shows a countdown from 5 to 1 in images and $SMILE is big that says 'smile'
So my question is thus... (fairly basic but I can't get my head round the use of & and sleep in this context) what's the best way to call my gphoto instructions (or a script with them in) mid way through the above code?!
'feh code'
sleep 5
'gphoto code'
this kind of thing seems like the way, but the'sleep 5' and 'gphoto code' doesn't start until feh is finished in this case?
