Ubuntu :: Screen Goes Black Halfway Through Boot ?

Nov 13, 2010

I have an asus netbook with an intel GMA integrated chip. until now i had been using the out of the box drivers, hadn't changed anything, and it worked ok. I tried installing a graphics driver and rebooted. This time i got the command line only, logged in, uninstalled the driver (apt-get remove) and rebooted, now after i choose ubuntu in GRUB an instant after the ubuntu loading screen comes on it goes to black. I'm trying to find a way from within GRUB to get it to do a command-line boot so i could force it to use the default drivers (how would i do this exactly?), but when i press "e" and then put "text" at the end of the "kernel" line it doesn't change anything. so what do i do from here? worst case scenario i reinstall ubuntu.

Slackware :: Framebuffer - I915 - And Current And Asus Eeepc - Halfway Through Boot Time The Screen Goes Blank

Mar 10, 2010

Got an Asus eeepc 900a. Runs Intel 915 graphics. Upgraded to slackware current last week. X would not start. Based on info here, I reverted back to earlier libdrm and xf86-video-intel. That got it working again.

Updated Slackware current again today. I think I got a new kernel. Now, halfway through boot time, the screen goes blank, then comes back and the font is tiny. Gone into framebuffer mode. If I start X, it just freezes. Nothing but a reboot will get out of it.

I have vga=normal in lilo.conf, but I read that this is no longer used. I can find no way to turn off framebuffer mode. From other threads here, I have tried append="i915.modeset=1" in lilo.conf. Has no effect.

I could revert Slackware to 13.0 from current, and that would make the eeepc useful again. Is there anything else I should try?

Fedora :: F11 Installation Screen Displaying Halfway Out Of Screen

I'm trying to install F11 on my old FSC Amilo Pro laptop. The installer starts fine, shows up on the screen fine, but the graphic installation window is wrongly positioned on the screen. It's about 300px too far to the right and about 300px too low on the screen, so that my Next, Back, Cancel buttons etc are off the screen.

Ubuntu :: Slow Boot Time - Boot To Bios And Then The Screen Goes Black With A Blinking Cursor

Oct 14, 2010

I've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.

Ubuntu :: Black Screen At Boot?

Mar 26, 2010

So, the problem is that _sometimes_ (I'd say around 5-10% of the time) when booting ubuntu, right after the splash screen (that pulsing white ubuntu logo on a black background), when normally GDM should pop in, I get a black screen and it stays like that and I have to reboot the machine. This is very annoying because I get this behaviour sometimes 3-4 times in a row... Also, sometimes (maybe half of the times when I get that black screen) the HDD LED on my laptop remains lit and the caps lock LED flashes. Right now I'm using a clean install of ubuntu 9.10, but I had the exact same problem with a 9.04 install and a 9.04 to 9.10 upgrade (so I had 9.04, I had the problem, I then upgraded to 9.10, the problem remained, and then I did a fresh install of 9.10 and the problem is still there).

My hardware is a Asus X51RL laptop, with a dual core CPU, 2GB Ram and a ATI X1100 video board. I also could paste a copy of any log you want me to, to help you identify the problem (but it would probably take some time for me to get that black screen, and also I hope that the logs remain saved after I do a hard reboot).

Ubuntu :: Boot Screen Goes Black

Sep 8, 2010

I'm going through this again. I posted this here as well as in the Mint forums because the architecture is very similar. What happens is that when I reboot, the screen goes black at the steps of the boot after about three seconds with each step. So I see the bios enumeration, then the screen goes black; I see the start up sequence with "Linux Mint" and the green/white dots beneath it, then the screen goes black; then finally, I hear (but don't see) the beep when the password login prompt shows. But if I get into the bios (dealing with the screen going black each time) and change it to "load default settings", then it reboots and works fine. Till the next time I boot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen When Trying To Boot Pc

Jan 28, 2010

Last weekend, I upgraded my old PC and installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a brand new pc. It worked perfectly for 5 days. When I got home tonight, it wouldn't boot and got stuck on a black screen.

[Code]...

I really am a newby here but I think that the blkid command gives me my uuid. The uuid in the /dev/disk/by-uuid directory is in blue so I'm guessing that this is a symbolic link. And then, when I try to create a symbolic link with the ln command, it already exists... But the issue is that the UUID that is referenced in the error displayed is not the same as the UUID in my /dev/disk/by-uuid directory.

Ubuntu :: Boot Never Completes (screen Goes Black)

Feb 7, 2010

I have had a really bad day (the first, after months of faultless operation)) with my Acer 5720Z laptop running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. First thing was at the second startup today, nothing other than totally black or white screens showed during boot. However, the ubuntu jingle was heard after the normal time it takes to boot, so I was certain it was strictly some video problem.

Ok, so after having thought about this for a while and reading about similar issues here and there on the web I was struck by the fact that not even the Acer screen with bios info etc. showed normally just after power-up. By then I had dragged a second, stationary computer to the livingroom, so I thought I'd check if there'd be video output from the Acer's VGA port. There was, and the ubuntu desktop looking perfectly normal. Aha! - only the backlight working on the Acer's LCD screen, but no video? So I thought I'd check for loose connectors to the LCD or damaged wiring (installed replacement LCD myself some months ago with no problems). This is going to be easy, I thought (being more of a gearhead/hardware type of guy) Turned the Acer laptop off and unscrewed the screen frame stuff. Now I just start it and switch back to internal display... For some reason (too many unclean shutdown(s) during the early "blind" nervous phase of the problem, I suppose) the Acer now hangs with a black screen before boot is complete and I am unable to switch between external/internal monitors. Fortunately I can use the external monitor (video is stuck to the external VGA on startup), get to command prompt etc. so there should be hope. But I have no idea how to sort this out after many unsuccessful attempts. (Recovery mode, disk check etc.)

I can't find any sort of safe graphics mode option in the GRUB menu. Booting from the Ubuntu 9.04 ("live" option) also finally stalls with a black screen and nothing further happening, just like the install that's on the PC.

how Ubuntu 9.10 runs on a stationary HP Pavillion 1840 which I rescued from the trash just like the Acer laptop.

Ubuntu :: Only Boot With Black / Blank Screen?

Jul 9, 2011

so I had a black screen when I was starting up my PC instead of the normal Ubuntu with the dots underneath. I have Ubuntu 11.04 on a dual-boot with Windows Vista. It would still boot normally and work fine but I wanted it with the Ubuntu and dots etc.

After looking at many sites to try and fix it that didn't work I found this: [URL]. That didn't work so I found this next: [URL]

I did what it said by removing

Code:
vt.handoff=7

Then when rebooted I got the Ubuntu with the purple background and dots but the boot would hang (always when all 5 dots were orange). I booted into recovery mode and I chose "File System Check" on reboot and it would get to the bit with 5 orange dots then it would check disk for errors and go to login screen then work fine.

If I added vt.handoff=7 it would boot normally with a black screen again.

RESULTS.txt is from when I had vt.handoff=7 removed and I was in Recovery mode>resume normal boot>"sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script.sh".

RESULTS1.txt is from when I booted up with the disk check and was in Terminal.

EDIT: Also just recently I'm getting a lot of boot hangs, freezes (where everything on screen will freeze and if I was playing music in Banshee it repeats the last 3 seconds until I hold down button on PC), and it will sometimes just restart randomly. Not sure if that related or not...

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Black Screen At Dual Boot With Win7

Jun 13, 2010

I am relatively new to Ubuntu ; I started 6 months ago with 9.10 and it worked fine. Recently I bought from Ubuntu the 10.04 version in French. The installation (dual boot with W7) went well, I personalized the software and had the "brilliant" idea to execute the recommended updates. Restarting the computer I just saw for a couple of seconds the blip up left and then a black screen. Nothing else happened. Posts to the French Ubuntu forum yielded no solution, so I decided to reinstall 10.04 again. It worked well a couple of times, and then again I had the black screen and no boot. How can I delete the installed versions?

Ubuntu :: Installation Not Completed - Black Screen On Boot

I thought I had the netbook version in my Acer when I booted it up, but I saw it was booting the full Ubuntu version. Instead of allowing it to finish installing to run from the flash drive, I stupidly shut it down and removed the flash drive. Ever since then, when I try to boot my Acer, all I get is the black screen of death. I've tried the flashit.exe to flash the BIOS, but no luck. So, I'm guessing it's not a BIOS issue.

Ubuntu :: Doesn't Boot From CD. Just Stays On Black Screen

Nov 4, 2010

I have tried booting from 2 different Ubuntu CD's (10-04-01 and 10-10) and a Fedora CD.All 3 CD's do the same thing, in Ubuntu I just see the first screen (Keyboard/Battery on the bottom with the guy next to it) and then the screen goes black but the lights, that indicate there's a computer connected and transmitting info onto the screen, are still on.

I know the CD's aren't the problem because they work on 2 other computers I have. The CD drive isn't the problem because took it out of a working computer and that booted up fine with the CD's.I've restored BIOS to default settings.I've tried booting with 1 stick of ram at a time but still doesn't boot.I've left the computer on for 3 hours but nothing appeared on the screen and the lights never turned off. It was just a black screen, nothing on it, not even a blinking cursor.I know it's capable of booting up CD's because the Windows XP setup disc boots.
