Ubuntu :: Screen Freezes On Suspend And Hdd Slows?

Jan 13, 2010

When ever I choose suspend to shutdown the hard drive slows and the picture on the screen freezes. The mouse and kb are disabled and the cpu fan keeps running. My hardware in in my sig below I have turned off automaitic updates straight after installing from disc as the last time I had it switched on after a few updates I got repeated ata drive read errors and the pc would freeze for a while being unable to read from the hdd. I have run wd diagnostics on the drive and it works fine. To fix this problem I did a clean install after messing round for 3 days and achieving nothing. I have an arch partition that works fine as well although I have not attempted to get suspend working with it. ( hal error) I have read a few thread on the net and tried entering the swap disks uuid into grub.

I am currently running 11.04 on my laptop. Firefox is struggling to cope with images for some reason. Whenever there are pictures on screen in firefox the computer slows down to a glacial pace.

I tried clearing out the history and cookie files, and i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling FF but the problem still persists. I have tried other browsers that worked fine with images, but didn't find any that i really liked.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Suspend/restart/shutdown/logout Often Freezes?

Oct 21, 2010

Lenovo X200 notebook, 64bit maverick, external monitor connected through DisplayPort, fast SSD drive, encrypted homeI'm almost positive these issues were non existent after installing 10.10RC, but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe I will install it again to check it outAnyway, when I try to suspend/restart/shutdown/logout the system often freezes, showing the console with the similar output:I know this guy is running Ubuntu in VM, but I have very similar ouput, except the last usplash line. But the first line I always have in the output is the infamousQuote:GLIb-WARNING **: getpwid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)On a very rare occassion, the system hanged while booting (showing the above glib line as well. But that's quite rare, so I'm not that concerned.

Now, sometimes it does respond to ctrl+alt+delete after freezing, and after I hit this combination, another line appears (from memory):Quote:Init: rc main process killed by TERM signalChecking for running unattended-upgradesBut that's it, I cannot do anything else, only hard reset, which is especially painful when I suspend in the middle of work...There is no interesting information in the logs - a few messages in the kern.log, but nothing I think would show the culpritEDIT: other than that, the machine is very stable and I have no issues with it. It also worked perfectly on lucid 32bit.

Debian :: Laptop Freezes When Going Into Suspend

Sep 30, 2015

I'm running stock Debian 8.2 with GNOME DE on an Acer ES1-512 series laptop. Whenever I attempt to go into suspend, either by closing the laptop lid or holding ALT when clicking the power button in the top-left system menu on the desktop, my laptop briefly flashes the default GNOME lock screen, fades to black, and then hangs there. Usually, when my laptop would actually suspend, the power indicator light would change from blue to orange and slowly fade in and out. However, now it just sits on blue. There is no way to re-awaken the laptop from this state, and I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.

Running Code: Select allgrep -i error /var/log/messages gives me:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: When Go To Full Screen Mode, The Digital Image Slows And Get Blocky?

Jan 13, 2011

I got a nice Christmas gift, a Westinghouse 42" TV/Monitor, and it works great with Ubuntu 10.10. The one problem I have is watching Hulu movies on it. When I go to full screen mode, the digital image slows and get blocky. When I check the settings, it is telling me I have a 32" not a 42" and there is no way to change it. It does tell me I have a Westinghouse. I also have a Roku and I believe it has a Linux OS on it and it works great

Hardware :: Linux Slows Down Significantly At High Screen Resolution?

Jan 11, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on Athlon Barton 2600+ 2.2GHz, 1GB RAM and ATi Radeon X800 computer at 1600x1200 resolution with 2d (no compositing like Compiz).

Looking into the trouble of slow windows resizing I ended up with the observation that for 1280x1024 it's reasonably fast while at 1024x768 it's extremely fast. But 1600x1200 is my LCD's native resolution.

At 1600x1200 my computer is quite slowly responding, resizing windows or moving columns width makes it stumbling, you can see the action clearly does not go right with mouse, it's always late. KDE 4.x is way slower than Gnome.

I've tried many graphic cards (ATi, NVidia) with all possible drivers - open and proprietary, with or without 3d compositing.

Some graphic parameters:
GL_VERSION: 1.5 Mesa 7.6
GL_VENDOR: DRI R300 Project
GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI R300 (R420 4A4A) 20090101 AGP 8x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE TCL

Glxgears gives ~4000fps with windowed mode and ~400fps at 1600x1200 maximized window. What is extremely amazing for me is that windowed mode takes 100% processor usage while 1600x200 maximized window (with window decorations) takes 30% of it, don't understand it.

Windows XP seems not to take care about 1600x1200 resolution, it's really fast.

Every time after I resume from suspend, firefox freezes up to 7sec at "flashed" sites. That is very annoying. If I disable the adobe flash plugin, it is smooth without flash. If I restart my laptop, everything goes flawlessly. It did not if I restart the X service. This also affects the chromium on both the smooth scroll and the freezing at flashed sites. Ubuntu :: Black Screen On Waking From Suspend

I've got Karmic installed on an HP 6930p, and with relatively little intervention, all hardware has been supported beautifully. I'm using the ATI driver for graphics. Battery life increased dramatically after an update a couple of months ago. However, occasionally (1 in 8 times maybe), the screen is black when waking from suspend. Disk wakes, etc, but the screen is off. Trying to re-suspend with fn key doesn't work. Ctrl-alt-f key combos don't work. I have to hold the pwr button down.

Ubuntu :: Hangs On Suspend/hibernate Screen?

Jan 12, 2011

Ok so I'm still a bit of a Ubuntu n00b and I just installed 10.04 on my new laptop (Asus U35F) and it's working pretty well except for one problem.. Every time the laptop goes to sleep/suspends/hibernates, when I try to resume it again it hangs. So I end up seeing the screen to re-log in and I can usually move my mouse around and start typing my password in and all of that for maybe a second, but after that it just freezes!

Especially since right now Ubuntu is the only operating system I have running, and since I use this in school and need to conserve battery as much as possible so it stays running through 6 hours of class, I really need to get this fixed up soon..

I've thusfar

1 - changed screensaver preferences to not lock

2 - set the gnome_keyring_hibernate, gnome_keyring_suspend, hibernate, and suspend, values all to false in gconf-editor

3 - commented out the line LOCK_SCREEN=true in /etc/default/acpi-support

BUT am still being prompted for a password every time the computer wakes up from suspend. I'm stumped, what could I be forgetting?

Ubuntu :: Sometimes When Resuming From Suspend - Screen Flickers With White Lines

May 29, 2011

I've been away from Kubuntu for a while but came back when Kubuntu 11.04 was released because it's awesome. I have a newer laptop since then, a Latitude E6410 with Intel graphics and 8GB of RAM. Everything works great, except......Sometimes when I resume from suspend to RAM, the screen flickers with thin white lines across the screen. I can switch to a tty and reboot it from there, but I'm unable to use KDE until I reboot. A lot of times resuming from suspend works without issue, but sometimes this problem occurs. I haven't figured out exactly what triggers it. In fact, the most recent time it happened, I didn't even have an application open.

I would like to figure this out because I use suspend a lot. I rarely turn off my laptop unless an update requires me to. I prefer to be able to close my lid and resume whatever I was working on later, but with this glitch I cannot trust it to do that.

Debian :: When Suspend And Hibernate Screen Goes Black?

Feb 26, 2011

I am having some pain with my new Squeeze installation, I am not sure if I am asking to much of it or it is an easy fix.

Firstly my system is laptop which I regularly plug a second monitor into. The video adaptor is an ATI HD4550 mobile.

My problem is that when ever suspend or hibernate my system, and even sometime when I boot up the screen(s) are just blank, although sometime they don't, it always happens if I suspend by closing the lid of my laptop, and only sometime happend with through Gnome is go ->System->Shutdown->Suspend. This is really annoying.

Another issue which I think is connected is that as I said I have a second monitor (most of the time) and when I boot up then it works until I log in, then a message pops up say the configuration can not be applied and it revert to Mirror mode or it does this thing where it places the second screen inside (virtually) the built in Laptop panel, it will not let me fix this through the monitors dialog just displaying the same message. I can fix this by doing

invoke-rc.d gmd3 restart

This gets as far as killing Gnome them it prints an error the to console, at which point Imopen a new terminal by ctrl+alt+f2 and
invoke-rc.d gmd3 stop
invoke-rc.d gmd3 start

then it works fine and even remember that I set the secondary screen to be the primary monitor through xrandr.

I tried install fgrlx drivers instead but it didn't really fix the issue, so I removed them.

After I woke it up, the desktop is completely black. After troubleshooting as much as I could, I did ctrl-alt-backspace, which brought me to a normal (non-black) login screen. However, as soon as I logged in, I was back to a completely black screen. But the system is operating.I rebooted the computer (warm reboot as well as cold restart) and each time the video is normal until I get to the desktop and all I get it black.Everything was normal until the pm suspend.Suspend has never worked exactly right, so I don't normally use it. But in this case, it used itself Next step: I logged in to console mode and looked at the logs. The only messages of interest seem to be in Xorg.0.log I found a couple error messages that might be of interest:

Debian Configuration :: Fglrx System Hang On Screen Suspend

Aug 18, 2015

My system is hanging on screen suspension... And its not the usual hang on "sleep" or others similars, it will happen by only having the screen on stand-by ( eg xset +dpms)...

If I leave for a while the screen will shutdown as expected but computer will completely hang after an indefinite time, it will not respond to outside connections and the will be spinning faster than usual...

Only workaround is to have the screen power save option disabled, in my case, on the KDE settings...

I have tried the most common solution to have "nomodeset" as a kernel option to disable mode setting, but this doesn't seem to work...

Also tried to forcebly reproduce the issue with Code: Select allxset force dpms standby/suspend/off but nothing happens like that...

This issue also only appears with the fglrx driver, open-source works well.
