OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Access Gnome Desktop On 11.2
Jan 19, 2010I am trying to install openSUSE 11.2 with Gnome desktop from the DVD in February's Linux Magazine which I hope guarantees a good disk. However both the live DVD and a trial full installation load to a green screen without taskbar or icons meaning I cannot run any applications or even close down. The live KDE version runs OK but I wanted Gnome because I have had problems backing up Kmail in the past. I have run version 10.3 with Gnome successfully on this computer previously.

All in all, I have had nothing but success with Ubuntu, being that I'm no to it, but knowing what I need, I can usually find the solution. My problem is accessing via VNC after a reboot. The issue is the keys (keyring)
Router is setup for SSH on 22 for PuTTY to work, 5900 for VNC to work. If I am at the machine and login, VNC is possible from outside. Should I be running a different server other than the Remote Desktop that is included?
Is there a way to login via SSH to unlock the GUI to allow VNC access? I would not even bother with GUI, but I'm not there yet with the CLI To all that have suggested I learn it, believe me I'm working on it. All of us out there that have the Swindows syndrome have an uphill battle. I can't be the only one up against this. If anyone who has serious skills could take 5 minutes and peek. I can't think of any other information that I could supply. If there is,

Feb 19, 2010Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

May 3, 2010When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." Why does this happen? it means that remote access is useless because you would need to enter the password locally before you can vnc to it. Aug 12, 2011is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

May 27, 2011I'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.

Jun 26, 2011I just installed Fedora 15 with the gnome desktop which looks like the android system for mobile phones, I installed wine which put the icons on my desktop but whenever I install a windows app it doesn't put an icon on my desktop for that particular application. How would I add an icon for those window apps so I can lunch them from the desktop, I don't know if you call that the desktop or just the program luncher either way how do I put an icon there so I can run those windows apps from there?

May 3, 2011I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:
system-backgrounds-gnome
When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?
Ubuntu :: KDM - No Access To Desktop
Jun 20, 2011I have a problem with KDM. No matter what I do, it will not give me access to my desktop. (Yes, I have entered the correct password, and I know that because when I intentionally enter a wrong one, I get red lines saying so). I have tried in recovery mode, other kernels, and the failsafe session. Console login does work. I have seen another similar thread and followed some instructions, but it was about GDM and it didn't work out.
I have ran genkdmconf, but to no avail (except it gave me a new face icon ). My other operating systems (Windows Vista and Ubuntu 11.04) do work normally. [EDIT: I do have an idea what's causing this because yesterday I flashed my BIOS from A11 to A17. I don't think this is the cause of the problem though, but some of you may disagree]. Of course it's not my first preference, but if a reinstall is necessary, I am one of the lucky few with a separate /home.

May 26, 2010I love Ubuntu but since upgrading to 10.04 have 2 probs. The first, which I have posted in another thread, is the splash screen. The second is this: with compiz, startup occurs in this order:
1. Gnome do dock and pointer appear on black background with no panels or desktop
2. Some hard drive activity
3. 10 secs no hard drive activity still no desktop
4. Gnome Desktop and panels finally appear with wireless already connected
It seems to me that the Gnome/compiz desktop is loaded only after everything else, including wireless and all services/processes. Compiz works fine, I am not short of ram or resources (2 Gb + Core 2 duo@2.7ghz). My question is then, is there a way to change the order of startup so that the desktop/compiz appears more quickly?

Aug 28, 2010after I installed gnome-do and set it to start at start-up, my computer has started freezing right after gnome-do initiates.what happens is I turn on my laptop and log in, and then when the desktop initiates, gnome-do starts and then immediately the prompt window for the login keyring pops up and then my dekstop environment freezes. I can move my cursor around, but when I click nothing happens and the keyboard is unresponsive. the only option is to hard reboot, but the same thing happens all over again. the curious thing though, is that the notification for connecting to a network is perfectly functional and the system monitor continues to record.

Jan 29, 2011I've recently updated to Ubuntu 10.10. At first I had no problems, but after the third time I logged in, my desktop background appeared (and nothing else) but quickly flashed to a black screen with some error messages (too fast for me to see) and I got sent to the login screen. After trying some more times I got the same problem with some small differences(sometimes my desktop icons showed up, other times it took a couple of minutes before I got kicked out).
I tried running startx from the terminal but got one of these two error messages: Server already running or could not find any listening ports. If I run "sudo startx -- :1" to switch the port I login fine, but as the root user. Gnome works perfectly here and when I login in gnome-failsafe. This leads to believe it has something to do with my user configuration. I've restarted xorg server, installed gnome-main-menu and made sure if got the current gnome package.
Ubuntu :: 11.04 With Gnome Desktop By Default?
Mar 10, 2011I here that 11.04 will be shipping with the Unity desktop by default. However, I prefer Gnome. I've seen the recent KDE and Unity interfaces and I don't like them. Right now I'm using Gnome under Ubuntu 10.10. Will there be a Ubuntu 11.04 with the Gnome desktop, which I think will be version 3? If there won't be, will I have to switch to another distro? I quite like Ubuntu.
