Ubuntu :: Reinstall Grub2 From 9.10 Live Cd?
Feb 14, 2010
I want to reinstall windows to its partition on my computer, but I want to be able to restore grub2 afterwards. I use a lot of custom scripts in the /etc/grub.d/ directory on my ubuntu partition, so how can I reinstall grub to the MBR using those specific scripts? Just running "sudo install-grub" or "sudo update-grub" doesn't work for me (I don't know the exact problems, but I can't reproduce it right now). If there's a way to install just the defaults (without overriding my custom scripts!) maybe I can just do that, but I'd really like to put the live cd, run a few commands, and install those custom scripts to the mbr and be on my way.

i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.
sudo fdisk -l

My friend recently re-installed WinXP on his laptop, but I'm having trouble getting Grub2 working. I followed a guide online, but when I booted it back up again, I got a Grub prompt instead of a boot menu.

I recently (for about the third time) HAD to re-install Windows 7. It just wouldn't boot and unfortunately I have some proprietary software that I need to use. Anyway, this is the first time I've had to do so since installing Lucid (64bit, fresh install). My problem now is, when I re-installed Grub2 (using the same methods that have previously worked flawlessly) to recover it after re-installing windows, only windows shows up in the grub menu, showing options to boot to Windows on sda1 and another to boot to Windows on sda2.
I grabed a "boot info script" from Rubi1200 and this is what I got..
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
Boot Info Summary:
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
partition #1 for /grub .....

This is closely related to a recent thread of mine that I unfortunately marked as solved prematurely. I'll try to keep it brief this time. After editing partitions I was left with a boot problem, namely "error: no such partition" and I am dropped at the 'grub rescue>' prompt. I can issue the appropriate grub commands and successfully boot the current kernel. Once booted, I executed 'sudo update-grub' and then /boot/grub/grub.cfg was rewritten with all drive and partition references correct. Likewise, /etc/fstab is also correct.
The problem comes when I attempt to reboot. I still get the 'no such partition' message and the 'set' command reveals that grub is still trying to reference the old partition. I've never encountered this problem before under similar circumstances. I'm guessing that this info must be stored in the disk's MBR as well as in grub.cfg because that file looks completely correct. Am I going to have to reinstall grub now?

I was dual booting Ubuntu and Windows, had to reinstall Windows, it wiped out grub, need to reinstall it now. Was following this: [URL]
Trying to reinstall grub with:
Code:
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/d566e91e-941f-4433-8dea-05d3bffb5669 /dev/sda6
Gives me the following error:
Code:
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are unreliable and their use is discouraged..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: if you really want blocklists, use --force.
*edit more info* Ubuntu is installed on /dev/sda6 on a 50GB partition.
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 26 56830 456280064 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 * 56830 56843 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 56843 70981 113561600 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda4 70981 77826 54979585 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 77096 77826 5859328 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda6 70981 77096 49120256 83 Linux
Partition table entries are not in disk order So, I didn't want to do anything and screw things up. I want to boot with grub and not MBR. What should I do?

I have a dual boot system. I need dual boot as my dictation software is only available for Windows. In the future I am going to try a virtual machine, but dictation and audio did not work properly the last time I tried in VM. But unfortunately for now I have a dual boot machine with Vista and Debian 6. Unfortunately, I am going to have to reinstall Vista. Or to be more accurate I'm going to install the 64-bit version instead of the 32 bit that came with the computer. I have the 64-bit version that I no longer use from one of my other computers.
Anyway, I have to install Windows which will overwrite my grub2. Is there anyway I can make a backup or reinstall grub2 after I install Windows. I really don't want to reinstall Debian 6 squeeze. Can they make some sort of a backup of gurb2 before I do this. I checked out the Internet and I found something called Super Grub2. It apparently will allow me to boot back into Debain 6 so that I can install grub2 again. Assuming, Super Grub2 even works then how do I reinstall grub2 once a boot into Debian 6? Has anybody tried Super grub2, does it work? It's kind of hard to test it, with a working version of grub2.

How can I restore or reinstall GRUB2 from squeeze installation? I tried various suggestions from various online articles (most of them for ubuntu), but I couldn't find a solution. Is there any solution, specifically for Debian? GRUB reinstallation from install cd, didn't worked as well. Since I couldn't boot at all, I restored GRUB1 and I'm posting from Lenny, but I can't access Squeeze this way (probably because I have squeeze's partition, ext4 formatted).

In drs305's standout article HOWTO: Purge and Reinstall Grub 2 from the Live CD, in the section where it says:
Quote: From the Live CD:
* If the Ubuntu OS cannot be accessed through the normal boot process (see above), boot a compatible installation CD/Live CD. The Grub 2 files are by default installed in the partition's /boot/grub folder and will be placed in this folder if the commands are run as instructed. (emphasis mine)
I'm not certain what precisely means "compatible" here? Is it using the same desktop (K/X)Ubuntu what is installed on the hard drive? Or the same release number (such as, in my case 9.10) or both or just ---well, you get the idea I'm sure.

While trying to boot ubuntu, I noticed that it was taking a long time. A lot longer than usual, in fact.I then forced a restart on my computer, and noticed that Grub looked different - the resolution was weird.I then tried again to boot ubuntu, and got the following messages:vga=792 is deprecated. Use set gfxpayload=1024x768x24,1024x768 before linux command.mount: mounting /proc/ on /root/proc failed: Input/Output error. And then the computer seems to stay idle forever.Recovery mode is also not useful: I can only see some periodic messages about a failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED.
However, I also noticed that grub showed something before it allowed me to choose which OS I would like to boot (Im running a dualboot configuration with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7).I managed to get it:error: hd0, msdos6 out of diskerror: no suitable mode foundConsidering that I have no trouble booting into Win 7, and that I can actually access my Ext4 partition from there, Im trying to reinstall Grub from a Live CD.Heres the output of fdisk -l :ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l

I had Kubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP on a Dual Boot. I upgraded using the update manager to 9.10. (I know, I'm a fool.) The Kubuntu install stated freezing hard on startup, just after the GRUB OS selection screen, at a blinking cursor and otherwise blank screen. I'm pretty sure 9.10 will work great from a fresh install, but the live cd freezes after main Kubuntu boot screen and even Windows live cd only shows Windows partition. fixmb, fixboot, bootcfg etc. do NOT replace the grub as desired.

I installed the latest updates earlier today. Instead of restarting I just shut the machine down after updates were installed. now I can't boot into Fedora 12. I booted using the live cd and all my files seem to be in order except there is nothing in the boot folder. Is there anyway to reinstall boot/grub from the live cd? I do have a backup copy of a previous menu.lst.

I have used grub2 to be able to boot multiple iso files on a flash drive as per this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1484582
Is there any way to add a persistent installation of 10.04 to this flash drive, similar to what the startup disc creator application can do? I'd like to be able to have the clean installation and the persistent installation plus the other tools that I have on the flash drive. It's an 8 gb drive so there is ample room.

drive is as follows:
NTFS Partition (Storage)
NTFS Partition (Win7)
Ubuntu
I am trying to put GRUB2 on the Ubuntu partition, but it will only let me pick the first two. If I pick the Ubuntu partition in the last dialog bix, it is listed as /dev/sda-1 I also have no idea why is says "-1", because the first two are fine at 1 and 2 respectively.

"In this tutorial you will prepare a USB flash drive to make it bootable. After you booted it it shows you a menu where you can choose which live system you want to boot. So you might be interested in this tutorial if: You want to have multiple live systems on one USB flash drive In the future you want to create a new bootable live system just by copying the ISO file onto the drive and edit the grub.cfg You don't want to or can't use Distro specific LiveUSB creator tools You prefer a cleaner solution than the most LiveUSB creator tools which create several folders and files at the device root You are feeling bored and want to see cool features of Grub2 If you have a Grub2 version with Lua support you even don't need to manually edit the grub.cfg when you add new or remove live systems." Remainder of information is found here: [URL] This was found in a closed Karmic Development forum - can this be validated and updated if needed for Lucid?

I have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.
menuentry "Debian 6.01 Live (on /dev/sda1)" {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,msdos1)
[code]....
Probly don't really need to get it working since PartedMagic can do almost everything I need for recovery and I can use the USB for reinstall or whatever else.
