I need to reinstall the GDM because of some problems with it. I can't login to my account because the text box where I enter my password is missing. I have a 32-bit version Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD with me.

Then i boot to win xp and used a partitioning software to take back some other unallocated space. after it rebooted to complete the partitioning processes grub wouldn't load. So i need to re install grub from this ubuntu 9.10 live cd.i tired the following
grub(didnt work the first time said i needed to install grub so did : root@ubuntu:~# sudo apt-get install grub )after grub was installedgrub> find /boot/grub/stage1 Error 15: File not foundthe previous linux partition I can see in the Computer with the boot directory and is called 1000gb hard disk: 27 GB filesystem see screenshot.
I want to reinstall windows to its partition on my computer, but I want to be able to restore grub2 afterwards. I use a lot of custom scripts in the /etc/grub.d/ directory on my ubuntu partition, so how can I reinstall grub to the MBR using those specific scripts? Just running "sudo install-grub" or "sudo update-grub" doesn't work for me (I don't know the exact problems, but I can't reproduce it right now). If there's a way to install just the defaults (without overriding my custom scripts!) maybe I can just do that, but I'd really like to put the live cd, run a few commands, and install those custom scripts to the mbr and be on my way.

I'm not certain what precisely means "compatible" here? Is it using the same desktop (K/X)Ubuntu what is installed on the hard drive? Or the same release number (such as, in my case 9.10) or both or just ---well, you get the idea I'm sure.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 with file system EXT4 and dual booting with Vista The problem is I am about to reinstall Vista which will overwrite Grub 2 I know how to restore Grub2 with the Live CD I currently I only have a Live CD of Ubuntu 8.04 which doesnt support EXT4 neither Grub2 I am on a very limited INTERNET so I cant download the Live CD. A solution would be the minimal cd image but the download stall at 96%

A lot longer than usual, in fact.I then forced a restart on my computer, and noticed that Grub looked different - the resolution was weird.I then tried again to boot ubuntu, and got the following messages:vga=792 is deprecated. Use set gfxpayload=1024x768x24,1024x768 before linux command.mount: mounting /proc/ on /root/proc failed: Input/Output error.And then the computer seems to stay idle forever.Recovery mode is also not useful: I can only see some periodic messages about a failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED.

I had Kubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP on a Dual Boot. I upgraded using the update manager to 9.10. (I know, I'm a fool.) The Kubuntu install stated freezing hard on startup, just after the GRUB OS selection screen, at a blinking cursor and otherwise blank screen. I'm pretty sure 9.10 will work great from a fresh install, but the live cd freezes after main Kubuntu boot screen and even Windows live cd only shows Windows partition. fixmb, fixboot, bootcfg etc. do NOT replace the grub as desired.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest updates earlier today. Instead of restarting I just shut the machine down after updates were installed. now I can't boot into Fedora 12. I booted using the live cd and all my files seem to be in order except there is nothing in the boot folder. Is there anyway to reinstall boot/grub from the live cd? I do have a backup copy of a previous menu.lst.

I have reinstalled windows 7 and now i can't boot ubuntu i've tried easybcd to add ubuntu to win boot loader which failed and tried to follow the instructions to reinstall grub through a live cd which i am in at the moment. i go to a terminal and type sudo grub and it brings up the grub prompt. i have mounted all discs and entered the command find /boot/grub/stage1 and it keeps spitting this back at me Error 15: File not found
my hd is a 80gb with partions like this

/dev/sda3 34gb ext4 ubuntu 10.04 64 bit

I've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?
View 3 Replies View RelatedLive CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.
I can't seem to find this anywhere. I have burned Debian 5.06 for i386 and trying to login when running the live cd. What is the username and password to get in?

I need aufs support/patch for kernel 2.6.34.1 as i i need to create a live linux distro for my organization and linux live scripts (the scripts which I am using for creating live linux distro) require aufs and squashfs support. There is a directive for squashfs in kernel configuration file but nothing for aufs and the patch available at linux-live site seems not to work.

Now the problem is whenever I try to create live usb using Opensuse live ISO image after extracting all files to usb , it gets failed.The same thing is happening with OpenSolaris 11 live cd iso image. View 7 Replies View RelatedInstalled 10.10 onto a brand new HD. Using the computer to introduct myself to both Ubuntu and file server concepts. I also installed Samba and was communicating wirelessly with 2 Win 7 machines. THEN I upgraded to 11.04, could not get wirless internal card (B43) to work. Everthing is a mess my 11.04 computer is a doorstop. I tried to reinstall 10.10 from the orignal distribution disk I had created. I would like to take off 11.04 and go back to 10.10 with Samba and a functioning wireless card. I have backed up files, I would just like 11.04 off and 10.10 back. I do not wish to deal with the wireless B43 driver and 11.04 for now.

I get this error message: No Boot Device Available, Press Enter to Retry.For some reason my OS loads no problem if I am just restarting my system. This just started happening out of the blue.I've already reinstalled a couple of times off the live CD and also deleted and reinstalled GRUB2 with no luck. Now I'm thinking about trying to delete and reinstall my MBR, but I don't know the safest/best way to do this. Can I do this with gparted? Is this something that can only be done in terminal? I've seen commands like install - mbr ... should I use this route?

I do have another Windows computer that is networked to this Ubuntu machine. It must remain Windows so I do have a Windows machine for a pinch. The question is I'm thinking of reinstalling Ubuntu on this machine by itself . No more Windows at all. What will I gain & what will I loose.

Anyway to reinstall firefox 3.5.8? It seems no matter what I install from the synaptics, 3.6 will be installed. They are all "dummy upgrade" packages I see. 3.6 is really really bad.
