I'm trying to make the power manager NOT automatically shutdown / sleep / hibernate when battery power of my laptop reaches critical
I am surprised there isnt an 'NO ACTION' option for that in power manager
I've tried editing the acpi-supper in /etc/default bu couldn't find a solution in there nor in the /home/user/.gconf/apps/gnome-power-manager/ directory
I there anyway to prevent Fedora from going to sleep / hibernate.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make my system automatically shutdown once the battery level is low, but still without success. I've tried kpowersave, gnome-power-manager, kpower, klaptop but none of these worked for me. Well, I can't imagine I would be that stupid, but simply it doesn't work. In all cases mentioned above (kpower, klaptop, gnome-power-manager) I've tried to setup the laptop to shutdown once the defined level is reached, but the laptop never actually switched off unless all the battery was drained.
Btw. I think all the above mentioned apps only work once the user is logged in. But I'd like the solution to work also when the PC is on without anyone logged in. I thought I could write a bash script based on parsing of acpitools output and define it as a service, which would monitor the battery level, but I simply don't believe there isn't any functional solution to this.
I've installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 on a small VIA C7 pc. Every now and then (it can take days or hours) the server goes to sleep. It can't be reached by network. If I hit the keyboard it comes to life within a second.I've looked in the bios and I cannot find any option that would prevent this. I used to run Debian Lenny on the same machine and never experienced the problem.

But recently, It displays no warning, and instead of hibernating it just shuts off. It still displays the "20 minutes remaining" libnotify warning, but thats not useful if I'm doing something fullscreen.

If I set my Ubuntu 10.10 to sleep after an hour of inactivity, I can't leave Blender to render overnight. The processing that Blender is doing seems to be ignored, and the computer goes to sleep after an hour. How can I prevent this from happening? I don't want to set Sleep to Never, I would like the computer to sleep after Blender is done.

I would like my screen to lock after the netbook goes to sleep but NOT after it enters the screensaver. is this possible? i use my laptop to read in the university a lot and to save power tell it to go into black screensaver after a minute of inactivity. if i enable the lock option i have to enter the password each and every time after the black screensaver activates. but if i deactivate this option and then put the netbook into sleep/hibernate mode it doesn't ask for a password (which i would like) is there any way configure separate passwords for these instances or are they firmly linked?

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my home laptop (MSI X410) and I wanted to use it as a media PC stored in the shelf under my TV. The issue is that I cannot open the lid everytime I want to use the PC because of the height of the self.Everything is working fine (HDMI to TV, running with closed lid once turned on...) except sound - no sound via HDMI. However, I think I might bypass this issue by audio cables though I haven't tried it yet.
Anyway, the issue is that I don't want to keep my laptop turned on 24/7 and once done, I would like to hibernate it/put it to sleep, to save energy, prolong lifetime of the pc and get rid of the noise. The restoration from hibernation/sleep works flawlessly, however I can do than only by pressing the power button (hidden under the closed lid).I can put the PC to sleep by pressing sleep button on my wireless keyboard, but I cannot restore it by pressing the same button, enter, or even power button on the keyboard itself. Under Preferences > Power Management I have changed the settings to never put the computer to sleep and never to put the display to sleep.
My display still goes to sleep and I am prompted for my password when I leave the computer unattended.
I would like to be able to hit the "Lock Screen" app I added to the top panel to lock my screen, but otherwise I would like it to just stay on.
where do I define that my laptop should go hibernate or suspend when my battery has a certain percentage? Where do I define this percentage ?I see no such options under Power Management Preferences.

I have some problems getting some of the buttons on my Thinkpad working properly. Volume buttons, thinklight, etc. work through tpb. It's the other buttons (sleep, hibernate, etc.) that are causing problems. The wireless radio button also works. I can hibernate and suspend successfully from the command-line using pm-suspend, etc. I have copied the 30-keymap-module-thinkpad-acpi.fdi file to /etc/hal/fdi/policy, where it sits alongside my UK keyboard layout policy (10-keymap.fdi). In this file, I have edited the 'radio' button to call a 'bluetooth' event instead, but it seems to be ignored and pressing Fn+F5 toggles both bluetooth and wlan radios and not just bluetooth... Is there something I have to do to merge the 2 files together? Or do I have to rename the thinkpad .fdi file so I have 10-keymap.fdi and 30-keymap.fdi?
I have the tpb daemon running but it's set not to block keystrokes and when I run xev and press the key combination for sleep, it reports 'xf86sleep' correctly, hibernate reports 'xf86suspend', etc., so I know the keys are getting recognized in some form... However, it seems that the HAL daemon is not picking up these events and running the corresponding commands. I am a member of the 'power' group, nevertheless, even running as root does not seem to make any difference. Finally, I am running wmii as a windowmanager with no desktop environment, and none of these buttons is configured in the window manager. hald should be picking up the events but it seems it isn't
When I tell the computer to go to sleep and there is a power failure the sleep state is lost. Is there a way to prevent this? I already know about hibernate and I'm using it but sleep is faster and there is no complete loading of the computer (BIOS, Grub and so on) it just goes directly into the desktop. As far as I know the sleep state is done when everything is in RAM and the computer is turned off but the RAM sticks still receive power. Is this true?
P.S. Can this be done with hibernate and SSD drives? As far as I can tell from what I've read it will be the same but with no state loss. Is this true?
I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on an IBM ThinkPad t43. I have a 9 volt battery that I use only occasionally. Usually I use the AC connection and when I'm finished working I leave the laptop in "sleep" mode. (Not always, but often.) When using the AC is it okay to leave the battery in the computer or is it better to remove it? Some swear it shortens the battery's life to leave it installed when not in use. Others swear--with equal fervor--that the newer ion batteries know when they are fully charged and don't have to be removed. Which is true? It's inconvenient to keep taking the battery in and out, but if it's necessary to prolong it's life I guess it's worth it. Some clarity good because, as I said, you can find equally impassioned arguments for both sides of this issue.

I know from Debian that if you do not explicitly want to do a system version upgrade,only bug fixes and security fixes are installed. That seems to be different with CentOS/RHEL?

I recently purchased a UPS (Tripp-lite Internet 550U)to shutdown my PC during a power outage when unattended. This model of UPS is connected to the PC with USB. Upon plugging in the UPS USB cable the Gnome Power Manager started up and it appears to correctly show the condition of the UPS. During a power outage it showed battery discharge right down to the battery going critical, but never shutdown the PC. I have set the options in the power manager for low & critical battery shutdow. Seems something is blocking the Gnome Power Manager from shutting down, but I have no idea where to start looking..
