I'm running Linux Mint 9 with Gnome.
I don't want my wireless network card to be automatically enabled in Network Manager when I start my computer. I keep setting it to disabled in Network Manager but when I reboot Network Manager has re-enabled it again.
Is there some way of starting with wireless disabled until I tell Network Manager to enable it?
Our corporate wireless network uses continuously changing passwords with RSA tokens.So every time we need to connect to the wireless we need to enter a new password off the RSA token. For extra fun using the wrong password a couple of times in a row causes the users account to be locked.Network manager automatically stores and reuses the password, with the net result that it is constant getting my account locked.Is there some way to prevent it from storing my password for that network?

I clicked "Network Settings", and I found that the ip address was wrong, which is "192.168.1.10/24", and netmask field is empty, so I modifed the configuration file located in /etc/sysconfig/network, named ifcfg-wlan0, added one line(NETMASK= '255.255.255.0'), saved it and reboot the system. After rebooting the system, I still found the ip address is wrong and netmask field is empty, so I have to use ifup command to activate my card manually every time the system starts.

I have autologin on Ubuntu but since there is no VPN password to decrypt I don't see why it should be a problem.
I have a 5720 Mini PCIE broadband modem card and though it works, it won't connect automatically in a Ubuntu system. Network Manager says it is enabled when I right click on the icon, but when I do a left click it says it is disabled. I have to right click and disable and then enable before my Verizon connection will work.

Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.
P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?
I recently installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and everything works fine except wi-fi card, of course. The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I attempt to connect to a wireless network, the network manager asks me for the network's password, then says 'setting network address' for 20 or so seconds, then asks me for some random Hex or ASCII key in the same type of window I put the password in (Secrets for Noel -- KDE Daemon). Since a key is already typed into the window, I press OK, which then causes the network manager to go back to 'setting network address', then the window pops up again and keeps repeating itself.
I'm running Opensuse 11.4 with KDE, and my driver is ath9k. I don't know much about linux so please don't tell me to 'recompile this' or 'change this setting' without explaining how to do it. Please help, I've been unable to connect to wireless in OpenSUSE for 2 weeks now.
I happened to Fedora 13 that the network manager does not indicate any wifi network and I had to turn off the notebook for a while and then recover, this also happened to me 2 or 3 times on ubuntu 10.04 too. my card is an Atheros AR5007EG.

When i have connect automatically enabled it never tries to connect. if I go to edit it it pops kde wallet up i put in credentials. wallet goes away then nothing happens. if i double click connection to my router also nothing happens. I have the wep key in there and i even made it visible to make sure.

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust moved over to openSUSE 11.4 (KDE) from Ubuntu, yesterday. However, I'm having some trouble with my wireless connection.
I have a wireless network with a hidden SSID and WPA2-PSK security. I entered all the nescery information into the KDE network manager, but it couldn't find my network. So I ran the usual command:

At which point, the network manager immediately found, and connected to, the network. However, it seems that I have to run this command (as root) each time I log in, before my laptop will connect to the network. The network manager has no problem find the plethora of unsecured networks as well as those that are secure, but broadcast their SSID.
Each time I boot up my laptop, I have to manually connect to my wireless network. When I ran Ubuntu virtually from Windows 7, it found the connection automatically. Now I have a dual partition of W7 and Ubuntu and it won't auto connect. How can I make it so?

They are NOT listed in my Startup Applications under preferences. For example, pidgin. Pidgin automatically starts at each login even though it is not in the startup apps nor can I find an option in pidgin itself. Tomboy is another. I always get an error that tomboy cannot be added to my panel when I restart. The error in the tomboy panel log is that tomboy is already running. Does ubuntu have a hidden "start up" folder like Windows does in the start menu? Where can I clear this file/folder?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using an HP laptop dv8000 series FYI. I started with a fresh install of OS11.2. The first thing I tried was to connect to a network through the gui net manager. This got me nowhere (nothing detected). I then noted that the card was not getting any signal/not functioning. My card is enabled from on the laptop.
I connected my laptop via ethernet and executed this command:

which returned no errors and seems to have completed successfully.

Now the option to enable wireless in my systray (I know wrong name) has become unselectable. Now what do I do?
I recently installed 11.3, I was able to get my wireless working. However only using the "traditional method with ifup", I could not connect with network manager. I remembered last time I installed 11.2, it was suggested that the wired connection was taking precedence, which was the initial reason I went the traditional route. I changed the wired connection to "on cable connection" and the wireless to "boot time" but still no luck. So are both methods fine and its just a matter of preference, I would prefer to use knetwork manager.

It's not a trouble with installation, it's a security issue relating to NTFS.I have a desktop running XP exclusive, but wish to also go dual boot but can not because I have created a NTFS partitoin on my HD wich I don't wish others to know about.After booting window$, I am able to successfully unmount the partition using Diskpart, which is a command line program within that OS. Once unmounted, it is effectively hidden from those who might be snooping until I manually remount it. Essentially I remove the drive letter which makes it inaccessible to Windows.
(Yes I know a person with proper skills can easily find it, but that's not applicable in my case for those who would look)If I install openSUSE which I desperately desire, it will automatically locate and mount the NTFS partition I wish to hide, making it easily accessible to anyone booted up in SUSE.Changing the attributes to the associated files to "hidden" is not an option. I need that secret partion to remain unknown.How can I hide, deny access to, or prevent that particular NTFS partition from automatically being mounted in Suse? Once that security issue is resolved I look forward to using Suse again, like the other people do in our home.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a rtl8192e card and the drivers and everything are set up properly. I can not connect to WEP encrypted networks using network manager. I can however connect using iwconfig and dhcpcd. I uninstalled network manager and installed WICD and have the same problem. It will connect to the access point when it is configured with WPA, but not WEP which we need to use for the other computer. In the status bar of WICD it looks like it is trying to configure the encryption as WPA no matter what I select. I've looked in the config files for WICD and can't see anything that would do it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 10.04 installed on my HP MiniNote Netbook. If I plug it into the the ethernet directly, all is well, but if I only use the wireless, i get no DNS servers. And one of my wireless networks is on the same router as the wired connection. Also, wireless works just perfectly on my MacBook Air. So, I do not think it is the router. So why am I not getting DNS addresses? How would I set them manually? I can't figure out how to start network manager.
