I use chromium on ubuntu 10.10.
I have just noticed, while waiting for exam results, that the pdf containing results would not show, because chromium appears to have saved the old pdf and won't update it.
When I opened the pdf using an incognito window it worked fine and also firefox worked fine.
This morning I thought I'd give Chromium a bash. I use Chrome daily, and wanted to see what the differences where.After installing Chromium from the software centre this morning, I went to >tools>Extensions to load the the same on Chromium as I use on chrome. To my surprise the Google Chrome web store puts a banner at the top of the page that says:

You'll need Google Chrome to install apps, extensions and themes.Which of course I already have chrome downloaded and installed via PPA, but that is besides the point.what can be done to rectify this. Surely Chromium browser allows the download and installing of extension?
Does anyone know of any download manager that allows you to time your downloads to start off at certain times / hours et cetera? I currently use DownThemAll! as an extension in my Firefox, but I don't think that has such a capability. I would prefer a browser extension, but if there's an application that would do I'd be thankful if you could name it.
I need this so that I time my downloads at certain hours and have them run automatically, due to the fact that my ISP allows some uncharged hours at night which I basically never made use of (but now I have to, as my free data download limit is close to being used up).
I see it wants to download them instead of opening them. How can I change the behaviour for PDF files to be opened by the default PDF app?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently converted my old laptop to Ubuntu a couple days ago and I'm loving it! This is my first post, but I've been reading the Ubuntu forums which have been helpful for tweaking little things and I'd say I've graduated from "absolute" Ubuntu/Linux noob to "almost total" noob in the last couple days (at least I know what the terminal is now!). On my regular PC, I'm a big fan of the Google Chrome browser, but for my Ubuntu machine, I was hoping to stay as true to the open source theme as possible, so while I do have Chrome installed too, I'd love to use Chromium as my primary browser.
The one drawback for me with Chromium vs. Chrome is that there are not automatic updates, but I wasn't able to find a clear, noob-friendly walk-through to set up a means to regularly update Chromium manually (either using the terminal or using the GUI). From what I understand, it would involve finding and installing Chromium build repositories, then checking and updating from those periodically.
The problem is that I don't really know how to go about doing any of this. How exactly does one add repositories? After they're added, how does one update from the Chromium builds located there? Are there any Chromium repositories for relatively stable builds versus the uber-newest test builds?
Am I completely off track and there's an easier way to set up a means to update Chromium?
Here at home I have several Ubuntu installations, mine, the kids computers and a couple of laptops. What I'm looking for is a solution or a pointer in the right direction to setup on our local Ubuntu server a sort of cache. Each day each Ubuntu on the network, checks for updates and downloads, and installs. What I'm looking for is a way for one machine to download the update and then the others to download from the local resource.
A sort of local cache to try and minimise everyone downloading straight from the net for pretty much the same updates. I did a emerge cache many years ago when I was using Gentoo, so I'm wondering what I can use/do here with Ubuntu as we are all loving this distro now.

View 9 Replies View Relatedafter running an upgrade chromium browser shockwave flash plugin crashed! if you have the same problem i have a workaround. firstly open firefox goto a website that uses flash (not videos) i used bbc iplayer, then right click and click on "settings..." the left most tab shows the "enable hardware acceleration" tickbox. untick it
then close and reopen chromium and go back to a flash site e.g. videos and test it is working. the reason this worked for me is that there is a bug in either googles chromium or the unix/x11 build of shockwave flash or my graphics card drivers. there seems to sevral bug reports regarding this on the net [url]. flash could be a little slower now it doesn't have the hardware accelerating it. so maybe the setting could be re-enabled in the future?
I was using Chromium Chrome 5.0.337.0 and Flash was working properly. Today I updated to Chromium 5.0.342.0(With "zypper update") and the Flash is not working anymore. I also installed Google Chrome from Google and it has Flash working.

Since it's his repo I thought I'd contact him, but I don't really know how - so I'm brining my issue to the forum to see if anyone has a possible solution.I've been using Tom's Chromium fine for the past couple months. After a "yum update", Flash no longer works in Chromium. It works in Firefox. If I try to play any Flash videos it's just a blank box.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI often use the option in Chromium to create 'application shortcuts'. These are instances of Chromium that make a website look more like an app by not including most of Chromium's toolbars. I use it for gmail and google docs and spreadsheets and calendar. In 11.04 I have set up Desktop launchers and copied them across to the Launcher (what an odd way to add something to the launcher, why no right-click 'add launcher' option?)
The problem is that the launcher thinks all these apps are chromium (which they are really, but I would like them to be seen as separate apps). If I minimize my gmail window, a little triangle appears next to the chromium icon, not the gmail icon. To get the window back, I have to click on the Chromium icon. Clicking on the gmail icon launches a new instance of it (also tied to the Chromium icon).
I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.

This doesn't happens if I have a previous instance of chromium opened in the usual way, without any flag. In this case if I open another chromium window with the --enable-gpu-rendering flag it's display looks ok, but I can't figure out what's the problem and how could this be fixed if there's solution for it of course.

Is it possible to force AWN to group this specific chromium window under the Grooveshark launcher that I have in the dock? Turning off grouping does not solve this either, as it just shows grooveshark as another chromium window.
Ubuntu keeps notifying me to install its new update but it will not download. A little bit downloads and then it starts over again and again. Is there anything that I can do about this, please?

I got a few fglrx-related error messages during upgrade, but it was too late to do anything. Here's the problem - I can't update or download any software using either Kpackagekit or apt-get. If I try I get an error message about unmet dependencies.

My internet connection is one where I have to pay according to the amount of data transferred and Ubuntu updates require large downloads. I was wondering if there was some way to export the list of packages required for an update in ubuntu and then go and download them from another PC. (The other PC in question will be running windows).I'd love to know of any apps that can do this ..If there aren't any can someone tell me if there is a way to do this? I am just getting used to Linux but I still have no experience at all with writing shell scripts (which I suppose would be needed for this sort of thing).
So in summary, this is what I want. Synaptic (or any other package manager in Linux) should generate a file with all the packages that should be downloaded. A program on the PC with a better internet connection then interprets this file and downloads the packages creating a local copy of the packages. These local copies are then transferred to the Linux box which required the updates and the updates are applied..

I opened Software Sources to try and remove the repositories, but couldn't find them. Plus I'm not sure if I need to manually replace these repositories with newer ones- I'm still relatively new at using Ubuntu (made the full switch from windows in October 2009). Plus, whenever I do install updates with the update manager, the "last updated" time doesn't reset itself. It finishes installing the selected packages, and the message at the top of the Update Manager window reads "Your system is up-to-date. The package information was last updated 28 days ago.

I'm currently running a dual boot system of Win XP & Ubuntu 9.1. When first installed, about a month ago, all was working fine then I started running the update manager and for a while that was good also. Suddenly I started having problems, for example, I couldn't download new software. I kept getting a message about waiting on other software managers or something. (since the re-install that is no longer an issue). Next I was having problems installing updates for some reason. Apparently something got corrupted. When my wife tried to boot up the computer last night we got a message that had to do with the kernel and Ubuntu wouldn't load at all and I wound up re-installing the OS.
Obviously something got screwed up with some of the updates and now that I've got Ubuntu up and running again I'm afraid to download ANY updates at all. What is a person to do if you can't trust downloading updates from supposedly trusted sources? My attitude now is, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have three CentOS machines which want updating from CentOS 5.2 to 5.3 sometime in the next week or two.I've always just done su -c 'yum update' on each machine, and let it slowly download and update a zillion pkgs. And every time I do that, I tell myself that *next* time, I'll figure out a better way.
I'd like to be a little more efficient this time, and have the 2nd & 3rd machines re-use some of the packages that the first machine downloaded. Two are workstations, and the third, a headless non-X11 fileserver, so they have different (but overlapping) sets of packages that they'll need. But the in-common packages comprise a lot of downloading that I would rather do only once. There's some way to set up a local yum repo on my server, mirror *everything* onto it, and update all machines from it. But that looks trickier, and way overkill for my purpose. Or I could just download ISOs, and work from there, but two machines don't have optical drives to boot from, and the ISOs contain tons of stuff that none of these systems need, so the download savings would be cancelled out.
A little reading of forums/manpages/etc, and I think I want to make use of yum localupdate (which I've never tried before), and do something along the lines of: 1.) Update the first workstation. It'll download all pkgs it needs overnight, and then update itself: [wkstn]$ su -c 'yum update'
2.) Make sure everything is working correctly.
3.) Grab every *.rpm from wkstn's /var/cache/yum and all its subdirs, and copy these to a temp dir on the server's raid: [wkstn]$ cp -a /var/cache/yum /server/raida/wkstn_yum_cache
4.) Update any server packages that the wkstn already downloaded.[server]$ su -c 'yum localupdate /raida/wkstn_yum_cache/'
5.) Update any server packages that the wkstn did NOT download: [server]$ su -c 'yum update'
6.) Deal with anything that broke on the server. The raid drivers, for example, always seem to need rebuilding, after kernel updates.
7.) Update the other workstation.
Question #0: Will this do what I want? I've never tried yum localupdate before, and the yum manpage doesn't elaborate much. Am I really barking up the wrong tree? Is there some much better way of doing this, for updating just 2 to 4 machines.

Ran the update manager, system was pretty much up to date, only a few files to download. Was it ever SLOW. Most of the time I can download from other sites about 650 kB/s. The update was around 10 kB/s and slower sometimes. What is wrong? Just a lot of people updating at the same time?
