I currently have a Raid0 setup with two disks and I have no problems whatsover. I currently bought 3 brand new 1B drives and I set up Raid5. I created the array and everything works fine. I formatted the array and mounted it. When I tried to copy 750gb of data over my new array, it copies fine at some point and it fails. After reboot, I am seeing the array inactive. I tried everything and could not get the raid back active status. I have removed the array and recreated again, formatted again. When I started copying my files over, exactly same thing happened.

I am currently having problems with my RAID partition. First two disks were having trouble (sde, sdf). Through smartctl I noticed there were some bad blocks, so first I set them to fail, and readded them so that the RAID array will overwrite these. Since that didn't work, I went ahead and replaced the disks. The recovery process was slow and I left things running overnight. This morning I find out that another disk (sdb) has failed. Strangely enough the array has not become inactive.

I know you can fail and then remove a drive from a RAID5 array. This leaves the array in a degraded state.
How can you remove a drive and convert the array to just a regular, clean array?

Recently, one the SMART utility said that one of the drives had failed and another drive was about to fail. I downed the box and hooked them up to my windows machine to run sea tools on them (They are all seagate drives). Sea Tools said that the drives were fine, while ubuntu said they were failing/dead. Yesterday I decided to try to fix one of the drives in the raid. I turned the server off, took the failed drive out, and restarted. Of course the raid didn't work because only 2 of the 3 drives were there, however it had been working w/ only 2 of the 3 drives for a couple months now (I'm a lazy college student). I turned it back off and back on with the drive there just to see if I could get the raid up again, but I havn't been able to get it to go. So far I've tried:

I have a fileserver which is running Ubuntu Server 6.10. I had a RAID5 array consisting of the following disks:

/dev/sdd1
/dev/md0 -
the raid drive for the above three disks. The sda1 disk has failed and the array is running on 2 of 3 disks
/dev/sdc (OS disk)
/dev/sde (new 2tb disk - unused)
/dev/sdf (new 2tb disk - unused)
My plan was to rebuild the array using the two new disks as RAID1. Would the best way to do this be to create a new RAID1 disk on /dev/md1 then copy all data over from /dev/md0? Also - this may sound stupid but since all 3 drives in md0 are identical i'm not sure physically which disk is bad. I tried disconnecting each disk one-by-one then rebooting but the system doesn't appear to want to boot without the bad drive connected. I've already failed the disk in the array with mdadm but i'm unsure of how to remove it properly.

When I set up Ubuntu 10.10 I had only one hdd around so I installed my system with the idea that I will add the 2nd hdd for raid1 later on. Last weekend I wanted to add the hdd, but discovered, that ubuntu created a raid0 array. So I went on and tried different things: removing the 1st hdd from the raid0 array, create a raid1 with two disks, and so on... I finally could syncronize both disks but after a reboot the raid0 array appeared again with only one disk. Now I know, I should have written the mdadm.conf and fstab files... My last tries resulted in a missing superblock. Here is the story:

seems like I killed my softraid. First, my initial setup: 2x 1.5TB SATA disks -> raid1 with mdadm -> lvm -> multiple LVs as luks partition This worked for a while now, even though I made a bad mistake; I created the raid out of the whole disks (instead of creating partitons on them). I didnt notice because it worked...
Now one disk failed, but I could still access the other disk which I moved to another server. mdadm recognized it during boot, after vgscan --mknodes; vgchange -ay I saw the luks partitions in /dev/mapper/ and could mount them via luksOpen. Went well several times, I did not use the disk anymore to avoid killing it also.
Just today when I wanted to move the stuff to my new raid, this way wont work anymore
First of all, dmesg reports a wrong size (500G instead of 1.5T)

I am using mdadm 2.6.4 for managing RAIDs on Linux kernel 2.6.18. I've a query like whenever I tried to add a new disk to a running linear array(JBOD)i get a message "cannot add new disk to this array".
The exact steps are as follows:
create a new array as:
mdadm -C /dev/md0 -llinear -n2 /dev/sata/ /dev/sata2
It is getting added and i am able to see with -D command.
Now add a new disk sata3 as follows:
mdadm --grow /dev/md0 --add /dev/sata3 I get the output as:
md: sdb has invalid sb, not importing!
md: md_import_device returned -22
mdadm: cannot add new disk to this array.
So my first doubt is whether mdadm 2.6.4 supports this features or not if it supports then do I need to change the driver?

I am running a 14 disk RAID 6 on mdadm behind 2 LSI SAS2008's in JBOD mode (no HW raid) on Debian 7 in BIOS legacy mode.
Grub2 is dropping to a rescue shell complaining that "no such device" exists for "mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f".

The UUID for md0 is `2c61b08d-cb1f-4c2c-8ce0-eaea15af32fb` so I do not understand why grub insists on looking for `b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f`.
**Here is the output from `bootinfoscript` 0.61. This contains alot of detailed information, and I couldn't find anything wrong with any of it: [URL] .....
During the grub rescue an `ls` shows the member disks and also shows `(md/0)` but if I try an `ls (md/0)` I get an unknown disk error. Trying an `ls` on any member device results in unknown filesystem. The filesystem on the md0 is XFS, and I assume the unknown filesystem is normal if its trying to read an individual disk instead of md0.
I have come close to losing my mind over this, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling grub numerous times, `update-initramfs -u -k all` numerous times, `update-grub` numerous times, `grub-install` numerous times to all member disks without error, etc.
I even tried manually editing `grub.cfg` to replace all instances of `mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f` with `(md/0)` and then re-install grub, but the exact same error of no such device mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f still happened.

One thing I noticed is it is only showing half the disks. I am not sure if this matters or is important or not, but one theory would be because there are two LSI cards physically in the machine.
This last screenshot was shown after I specifically altered grub.cfg to replace all instances of `mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f` with `mduuid/2c61b08d-cb1f-4c2c-8ce0-eaea15af32fb` and then re-ran grub-install on all member drives. Where it is getting this old b1c* address I have no clue.
I even tried installing a SATA drive on /dev/sda, outside of the array, and installing grub on it and booting from it. Still, same identical error.

We have some servers that run in very harsh environments (research vessel) that need to have high-availability.We have software RAID 1 for some measure of resiliency, along with proper data backups (tapes etc), however we would like to be able to break out a new server and re-image it (including RAID setup) from a known good copy if the hardware completely fails on the production box. Simplicity of the process is a big plus.I am interested in any advice on the best way to approach this. My current approach (relatively new to Linux administration, totally new to MDADM) is to use DD to take a complete gzipped copy of one of the RAID'ed devices (from a live CD): ode:
dd if=/dev/sda bs=4096 | gzip -c > /mnt/external/image/test.img then reverse the process on the new PC, finally using Code:mdadm --assemble to re-create and re-build the array.

I have SLES10-SP3 running on an Intel SR1600URHS board with 3 hot-swap SATA disks configured using mdadm as Raid1 with hot spare. If I pull one of the active disks, all file i/o will stop for about 2.5 minutes after which it will start again and the raid array will be rebuilt using the spare disk. Is there any way I can reduce this 2.5 minutes of inactivity? I've tried setting /sys/block/sdX/device/timeout and /sys/block/sdX/device/retries to 1 for all disks, but this hasn't made any difference. The output from messages is:

Here's a brief description of my system:
120GB Sata HDD - Primary OS drive
3 x 1.0TB Sata HDD - Raid 5 array
This is on a C2D MSI P35 Platinum board. Anyway, did a fresh install of F12 on the 120GB, which I had problems with - Anaconda refused to see the drive. Fedora Live could see it fine, and it was listed as an 'nvidia_raid_member' - no idea why, but I completely erased the disc under the Live CD and proceeded to install F12.
Once F12 was installed, I loaded up mdadm to re-activate my Raid 5 array, using 'sudo mdadm --assemble --uuidthe uuid) - and it started with only 2 of the 3 drives. My /dev/sdb drive did not activate into the array, due to what mdadm said was a mismatched UUID. Ok, so I erased /dev/sdb, intending to rebuild the array. Erased /dev/sdb, and then attempted 'sudo mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdb' and I get this error: "mdadm: Cannot add disks to a 'member' array, perform this operation on the parent container" - I can find NO information on this error message.

I don't believe the hard drives are connected in the exact same order they were in before - I disconnected everything in the system and blew it out (it was pretty dusty)

I am planning on setting up a 4x1TB RAID5 with mdadm under Ubuntu 9.10. I tried installing mdadm using "sudo apt-get install mdadm", all worked fine except for the following error: Code: Generating array device nodes... /var/lib/dpkg/info/mdadm.postinst: 170: /dev/MAKEDEV: not found failed. The end result is the /dev/md0 device has not been created, as can be seen here:

OS Fedora 10.
On shutting down teh machine I see two items are reporting as failed.
Stopping Kernal LOOPS: Failed
Stopping PC/SC Smart card Daemon PCSCP Failed.
I do not see any problems with any of the start up items.
The above failures occur if I use the machine for a while or just boot it and then at the log in screen just shut it down.

I'm running Kubuntu 9.10, and I like it (yay!) But I've been having issues with sound. Especially under system load I've been having an error where it says that the device analog 9xxx has failed falling back to digital, then it says almost immediately device digital 9xxx has failed falling back to analog. At this point any programs playing sound seem to retain that ability as long as I don't close them, but any programs I open have no sound. This applies to webpages and flash, as well as internal programs. I have also been having issues with video, no errors, but the video skips and freezes. Flash video occasionally crashes and any flash games that submit data (e.g. high scores) to a remote system crash my browser.
I end up having to pause the video and move it back several frames, then wait as if it had to load from ..... for a while, and it will run again for some time. My hardware is a dell inspiron e1505 on which the only things I have done are to replace a broken monitor and upgrade the ram (that is, after I broke windows too many times and converted to Linux. I don't have more error data for you, I simply haven't had the foresight to stick it into a text file yet. The error is displayed in the Notifications and Jobs button in the system tray, which is not well suited to copying and pasting, and I'm admittedly unsure as to how to find the error. I learned BASH on Sun unix at my local college and I still haven't quite learned all of how to speak ubuntu's terminal.

At first log-in as user all was fine yesterday. Today I must have rebooted for the first time because it was all different. I tried to log-in to KDE this morning and it failed with some weird error messages that don't repeat here. It seems it all boils down to the fact that the /tmp folder has the wrong permissions. Whatever I try it always has the permission 755.
It is an encrypted /tmp permission mounted in fstab like this:

I can login as root in failsafe and look at the tmp folder:

So the wrong permissions. How to solve this?
I tried to go into rescue mode and change the permissions of the folder, but nothing helps. In rescue mode it is like it is in my OS 11.2 on another computer:

A temporal work around is to change de permission as root and then I can login, but how to get the permissions right at boot up? What is wrong?

I got out of kde used soma a cli radio station player, got back into kde and sound was screwed up, couldn't restart sound had to reboot, thought it was soma problem. Got out of kde, did nothing for several hours, got back into kde and sound was screwed up, couldn't restart sound had to reboot. Had kde running couple days, xmms stopped playing music, no matter what I tried with preferences I kept getting no sound or sound card not configure properly, had to reboot. Is there a sound log or something that might hint at what's going on?
I also found posts that say to rmmod snd_atiixp_modem because it clobbers the regular snd_atiixp module but snd-atiixp-modem is not loaded. Toshiba Satellite M55-S1001 (Celeron M 1.6 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB HDD)

Currently I have a 500gb drive with Ubuntu on half of it. The other half is a soon to be Win7 install. I just picked up an identical drive for real cheap last week and I am interested in advice for going about setting up a RAID 1 for redundancy. My first road block is do I want software or hardware RAID? Is this even possible with a dualboot system? If hardware RAID is the way to go does anyone have a particular brand or model they could recommend?

A few weeks ago, I upgraded one of our machines to the 64-bit server edition of 10.04. All went reasonably well (after some hoops to get it to properly recognize/mount the RAID + LVM partitions), but one of the things that confounded the installation process was login timeouts. From doing some research, I thought I'd gotten it solved by removing the checks for updated packages on login, but I either didn't get it done, or there's something else going on here.The issue is that the machine is headless and is actually a file & application server, but I do need to connect to it via ssh on a regular basis. However, the issue isn't related to SSH, as it also happens when I try and log in through the physical console too.
What happens is that every so often, login attempts will time out for a period of minutes, then they will suddenly start working again, instantly giving me my expected shell. Again, I suspect it is something with the way the motd junk is being generated, but having a server that prevents you from logging in is totally unacceptable. I've no idea how to go about debugging what happens because I don't see anything useful in any of the logs, and I don't have a way to trace the login process from outside. I'd love to hear what the problem actually is and how to prevent this from happening.

I removed the hard disk from my EeePC and used it with Debian Squeeze on a 16GB SD card. It wasn't fast, but it was all solid-state, and that's important to me. However, lately it had started misbehaving. When recovering from sleep it'd lose all fonts (everything was displayed in squares), files could not be found and programs would stop working, and in a short time the system would become completely useless. Then after a while it started doing it regardless of sleep mode; I'd turn it on, do something, and it would work for a while - or maybe not - and then screw up. As an example, I noticed that unmounting partitions from gparted would do it almost always, but unmounting them from shell wouldn't.
Sometimes simply opening the browser would cause this weird crash. When shutting the system off it'd complain about the ext4 partition, though I don't remember exactly what it said. I thought it was Debian that had somehow screwed itself up (or I had...), so I wiped the card and installed Ubuntu Netbook on it. I was quite surprised to see that that, too, failed in the exact same way. I'd blame the SD card, but the strange thing is, the data on it is perfectly fine. In fact, I temporarily fixed the problem by reinstalling the hard drive, dd-ing the whole SD card on it and then expanding the partition over the unused space. From this setup, the system works perfectly - using the same data from which it used to fail when running from the SD card.

I'm having problems with my php 5.3.3 installation when trying to access remote domains. The problem only happens when the PHP scripts are run via Apache 2.2.15. The problems appear to affect all functions that might access a remote domain (e.g., gethostbyname, file_get_contents, curl, etc.). Basically, pHP scripts can't resolve a remote host when run via apache.
So I thought I might try to reinstall curl (I'm OSX 10.5.8, btw). I ran configure and make fine and then make test reports the following:

I just bought a new emachines et1331g-03w I can get the cd to boot and give me the choices. When I select run from cd it acts like it is getting ready to load and then the screen goes black and hangs.I have tried both 8.04.3 32-bit desktop and 9.10 32-bit desktop both give the same problem. Both cds work fine on other computers.

I did it the wubi.exe way this time and I installed ubuntu 10.04 64-bit on my brand new HP dual-core 64-bit with win7. I was super happy to see it install too, because I've definitely missed using ubuntu in the past few days while setting this computer up.
However upon reboot, I see the usual "choice" menu. I choose ubuntu... it then goes directly to grub menu. I click the generic (I also tried safemode too) and I then only get full screen of code with a blinking curser at the bottom. Nothing else happens so I eventually have tp hard shut down. I sure wish I could screenshot all of that code... it's way to much to type out though, sorry.
I already tried the i915.modeset=1 and the i915.modeset=0 after quiet splash tricks,because yes, I do have an Intel. It's a brand new computer though, I thought only older intel cards had thar problem?
I also tried a fresh install of 9.10, even 9.04 (with live cd's that I know work)... same thing. A screen full of code after clicking "Try without...."

i just migrated from fedora to debian, and i already love this system. it only seems that i am facing a serious problem with this graphic card.running on debian 8.3.booting my system, i do get this message:
