I am running Ubuntu Server Lucid 64bit on an AMD-based system and Ubuntu Server Lucid x86 on a dual P4 HP Netserver. I have a Trust PW-4120M UPS plugged into the AMD box via a serial cable.I have installed nut on both systems from the repositories (with "apt-get instal nut") and configured the AMD system as follows:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a project in school that the requirement is to show the proof of concept of a high availability virtual servers. the guest operating system for the test case will be a Windows variant and a Linux variant that if the main host that hosts both of this VMs fails, both VMs will be restarted on the backup host. Simple enough with VMware vSphere and citrix xenserver with essentials with their enterprise features, But I am not allowed to use a software that one will need to pay-for or is only a trial version, i need to use an open source solutions, and i am not allowed to use virtualbox.
the school has provided me 2 server class 64bit hardware with intel-vt support, i have my laptop for management tools and to also run a virtual appliance for a iscsi target (openfiler as a vm in virtualbox in my laptop).
I have figured that i will use KVM on a ubuntu server as my hypervisor but i cant find any how-to on how to implement a high availability setup that will run a windows variant as a guest. can some one give me a step by step on how to do this.
from my research it looks like i will need DRBD and heartbeat, but i dont know how to use them and if they are applicable in my needs. I wouldn't probably use DRBD since I have a sudo SAN with my iscsi target, so i can probably use open-iscsi.

I currently a default virtualhost and 2 other sites. No matter which domain I visit I still get the default page.. My Confusion is, I've been reading and some places seem to say that my virtual hosts should be in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/*Config File* and other seem to say it should be in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf what the awsner... I've tried both ways with no success .... If I put NameVirtualHost in httpd.conf I get an error saying their are no virtual hosts.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been searched for the related topic, but i couldn't found any of them. Basically, i want to set up a server to restrict internet access for other computer (windows box), but allow internet connection for kaspersky to download its database. Here are some questions:
1. Do i need two network card at the server box?
2. There are 8 computers but only 2 are allowed all internet connection, 6 of the rest are not allowed, all windows box can accept connection to download database from kaspersky.
3. Is it Iptables the best, easiest way to configure?
I successfully configured my local DNS server. I have server1.mydomain.com, pc1.mydomain.com and so on ..
The problem is that my website is hosted on an external server (not on the local network), so www.mydomain.com is not found in the configured zone/subnet

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Squid Proxy Server alongwith Dansguardian, dhcp3 and ClamAV on my local network. Everything is working fine except for .flv files like [URL]. The problem is that Squid wants to download the whole .flv file first to its cache and then serve it to the client.
It has an advantage that the whole video loads at once on the client's browser but that is not what our users want.
What they want is that these files load on the fly as they do on a normal internet connection. How do I configure squid to serve .flv files on the fly to the client PCs?
I've been running denyhosts on Ubuntu 8.04 servers without any problems using the how-to found hereow that I have a new Ubuntu 10.04 server running, I thought I would just install denyhosts from the Ubuntu repository not realizing that the paths and filenames of the install are different from the how-to I am used to using.I figured out what the name of the new denyhosts config file is (at least new to me) and the new location, but I'm not sure about the "allowed-hosts" config file.Does anybody know where the new path for this file is and whether the filename is still the same?

I installed MySQL and have some experience with MS SQL but have no clue how to get started setting up databases and writing procedures in MySQL. I know all the syntax about writing scripts for MySQL (assuming it's the same as SQL) but I don't know how to get started. Do I need to be on the web server or can I do it remotely? Is there a front end GUI that everyone uses?

I got: One Win2k8 server as Domain controller. One Ubuntu 9.10 server who is a member of the domain using Samba. Winbind is working correctly.. I can at least connect to shares with user names of the AD. Anyway my client (WinXP) currently logs on to the AD and works from there. I want to configure it so that all accounts are going to use roaming profiles, but here it comes... I want to store the roaming profiles on the extra Ubuntu server.

Originally I had installed openssh-server (through apt-get, before learning about tasksel). I assumed this only had ssh support and not ftp, so after a quick search, I installed vsftpd. I would like to learn how to configure openssh, and I mention vsftpd in case there is a conflict.
Right now I am able to log in to my server box through ssh/ftp, but I can only modify my home directory. I created a directory: /var/www/andrew and set permissions to drwxr-xr-x. I am unable to upload files to this folder.
What do I have to do to resolve this, and is there anything else I should know about my situation?
My project for today has been setting up a web server. I have Ubuntu 10.10 Server installed on a 32 core machine(quad AMD Magny Cours 6128 ), and I was wondering what kernel configuration would optimize its performance?So far, I have only found the obvious configurations that are checked off:
1) Processor type and features ---> Support for big SMP systems with more than 8 CPUs
2) Processor type and features ---> Maximum num of CPUs
3) Multi-core scheduler support
Is there anything else I should consider?I plan on running multi-threaded programs with moderate amount of inter-processor communication, shouldn't there be some options related to the shared memory?
I have used for a long time Filezilla FTP Server on a windows server, for multiple users in my company around the country.Lately the windows box died and I said let's try ubuntu server 9.10. I configured to my best as a Samba file server and from a speed point of view it works even faster than the Winbox.Now getting to FTP setup, I had the following problem when setting vsftpd.How can I enable more directories for the user, each with its own rights. By example, in Filezilla I had two folders for each user: one was a specific folder in which he could also write, and the other was read-only. They were setup with aliases, so that when user login, he sees one continous list of folders.I tried with symlink, but couldn't do it. Also I searched through the man page but also did not find something specific for this task I would appreciate any help you guys could give me in order to solve this issue, using the best practice for vsftpd. Also note that I am open to other FTP servers as well.

I just picked up an identical drive for real cheap last week and I am interested in advice for going about setting up a RAID 1 for redundancy. My first road block is do I want software or hardware RAID? Is this even possible with a dualboot system? However I'm a little lost, does anyone know of or can anyone write a small howto on how to get this module working on certain nodes. My current state is puppet is running and connected to the puppetmaster. I can do simple things but the apache install have lost me a little.
View 1 Replies View RelatedStarting with Ubuntu Server 9.04, when I log in at times the OS smartly reports the number of updates available. I have a couple of questions of how to extend this functionality:
1) How could I back-port that functionality to 8.04 servers? Does that happen somewhere in the /etc/cron.daily/apt script? (Just the checking on # of packages needing updates, does not need to appear on the login screen.)
2) Then with that information, if the number >0 then use mailx to send admins an email. Since 9.04 and higher already do the first item, then in my mind #2 is the only thing needed for 9.04 and higher servers, and #1 is also needed for 8.04 boxes.
I'm a bit of a Nooob to Virtual hosting. On my internal network 192.168.1.x I have a dns server running bind9 My DNS / web server is 192.168.1.3 I have succeeded in getting [URL] to resolve and it goes to my web page in /var/www/ Now I want to get say [URL] to go to /var/www/music/
1. What's the best way to go about this?
2. Can I configure it using webmin or do I just do it the old fashioned way through a terminal?
