View 6 Repliesfor security reasons,I want to disable shutdown for normal user, but the post here does not help me. It is because when I open the /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf I just saw a blank file. I use the 9.10 version.

I tried rebuilding and installing the proprietary NVIDIA driver, as it builds it's own config file for X. I've had no previous problems with X on this system. The last major change to the system before the last log out was the installation of MCNP5. MCNP5 was installed under the regular user; no root privledges were needed.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been having a small problem since I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic, whenever I shutdown or restart, root password is required due to multiple users being logged-in.
I have run ck-list-sessions, however I can not trace where (or what) session 5 is.

Since I have MythTV installed and there was a similar bug, I tried the following solution without any success: [url].
My normal day to day user can't shutdown, restart, logout, etc...It just doesn't do anything at all when I try. This wasn't the case three days ago, just fresh installed and seeing the same problem (so it must be some setting saved in my home folder which wasn't wiped).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using fedora 12.I have two internal drives. Both are ntfs. Whenever i click on them it prompts to enter root password. But i want to mount them as normal user without entering any root password. How can i disable it so that i am not asked to enter root password everytime i mount the drives.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhat I'm trying to do is to grant my regular user to locally mount partitions and shutdown the machine without a password. Here is what I've done to /etc/sudoers:
Code:
Host_Alias LOCAL = localhost
Cmnd_Alias SHUTDOWN = /sbin/shutdown
Cmnd_Alias MOUNT = /bin/mount, /bin/umount
<my_username> LOCAL=(root) NOPASSWD: SHUTDOWN, MOUNT
%wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL
My user is a member of wheel group and I want to type the password for each sudo command except for shutdown and mount. However I am asked for a password whenever I execute "sudo mount [...]" or "sudo shutdown [...]".
I have installed ubuntu 11.04 on my HCL Me Laptop. The OS is not getting halted when I use the shut down or the restart menu from the GUI. It is not shutting down when used the commands 'sudo shut down now' or 'sudo poweroff now' or 'sudo halt now' or 'sudo init 0' also. Except when used the 'shut down' command, the command line hangs at:
init: plymouth-upstart-bridge main process (1981) terminated with status 1
checking for running unattended upgrades.
When used the 'shut down' command, the violet screen where the word ' ubuntu ' is written appears and hangs. I have updated my OS yesterday, but it is not fixing the problem. All the time I am using power button to have a forced shutdown. I loved the natty nerwhal.
I have a question that i want to make a normal user to execute the commands which the root user is able to execute, say if i have a user named siru and when i logged in using siru i cannot run commands like tracert,nmap@loccalhost and all but i can run when i have logged into root account so my question is how to make siru to run the command tracert,nmap@localhost.I have even edited the .bash_profile of siru's home directory from
# .bash_profile
# Get the aliases and functions
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then

Recently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.
The following problems persist:
1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly.
2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.
I recently installed FC13 on my Acer 2920 laptop. During normal routine work, the system shutdown unexpectedly without giving any message. This problem continues every time I boot fecdora.

I have just installed 11.04 on my Acer Z5610 and it won't shutdown or even restart noramally. I have to force shutdown every time. I installed the ati graphics drivers but still no change. What could be wrong?I have reinstalled 4 times, using usb and cd.

This is a really weird issue. I'm using 10.04 and on occasion when I boot into Ubuntu the sound doesn't work along with losing the ability to shutdown via the menu. When I click shutdown it just logs out. I need to shut down my PC by using the terminal.
It's strange because the sound and shutdown work as expected most of the time. The issue is seemingly random.
I installed 10.04 on my old Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. After using it for about an hour, I was suddenly had no option to shutdown or restart the system when logged in on the main and only account. The 'Shut Down' applet on my bar was greyed out and the shutdown option was missing from the system menu.
I removed the 'Shut Down" applet and was unable to re-add it afterwards (wasn't a selection when adding to panel). If I log off, selecting shutdown or restart from the login screen does nothing.
'Sudo shutdown now' will shut it down, though it won't power the system off; it just hangs on an all-white screen.
I saw other posts suggesting Open Office Quickstart was the culprit, though I am not running this.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 11.04 on an IBM Thinkpad T60, when I try to Logoff, Restart, or Shutdown the system just goes to a black screen and I'm forced to do a hard reset to restart the system. I did a reinstall and things seemed to be working fine until I applied updates and reloaded my package list from my previous install then I got the same conditions as before. I suspect that this my be a result of a bad package or update. What I want to know is if their is a way to display console text of the shutdown process so I can see where the system hangs and possibly remove the problem application. I have an AMD 64 bit desktop running with the same package lists and have no issues I suspect it is a hardware specific issue for the laptop or an error with a 32 bit install.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I start my PC, the information of 'First Boot device' in BIOS changes from hard disk to CD-Rom. It happens with new start, I mean, if I restart my computer after resetting First boot device to hard disk, then priority does not change. Just as I switch on computer, a black screen appears with the message:
CMOS - checksum error - defaults loaded
press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup
Recently it used to happen, that PC was not reading my hard disk containing GRUB. I have 2 hard disks. I switched the power cables of two hard disks. After that, both hard disks were shown by BIOS but the above mentioned error started appearing. Also grub takes too much time to load. It takes almost 20 seconds. Earlier I was using 'Puppy Linux'. In that, Grub was loading in fraction of second.
I just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.
Is there a way to disable the window that pops up after you hit shutdown or restart so that Ubuntu restarts and shutdowns after one click?
