Ubuntu :: Obtaining Permissions On A Different HD?
Apr 4, 2010
my sister's easy peasy ubuntu netbook crapped out. i took out the hard drive and hooked it up to my desktop. on my desktop, i booted into ubuntu via usb and browsed for files to salvage. certain folders say i don't "have the permissions necessary to view the contents."
how can i obtain these permissions? it's been a while since i've dealt with linux.

So to give a little background, I'm trying to pass wireshark(with a custom plugin) through my company's build system. The build system functions inside a change root thus all the dependencies need to located somewhere inside the chroot. Wireshark has a massive dependency tree that I couldn't possibly import manually one by one.So my question is, is there a way to conveniently import all the dependency packages somewhere on your local machine. This would mean I would just import the one folder into my change root.PS: the build-system's change-root has SMART package manager installed. But the channels it comes with are local ones(very little to choose from). So an alternative solution would be import therepositories that apt-get uses into smart and then use smarto install the packages which is monumentally easier.

I've signed up with a hosting company and have access to logs of visits to my website. How can I process these logs to obtain the geographic location of visitors from their IP number? If there's a way of bash scripting this, it would be ideal, or a dedicated softare that could read in the log file and output the location for each visit

I had no luck with network manager and i was surfing the net and it said wicd was better so i installed that and installed 1.6.1 But it was not obtaining an ip address
So i searched again and ppl said that its a problem with 1.6.1 and they said 1.5.9 was better. So i installed wicd 1.5.9 and its still not obtaining an ip address.
The router is unencrypted no security, ppl suggested trying to set a security on it so i tried WEP and when i do that it gets stuck on trying to authenticate the key phrase.code...

I want to compile geki2 from source. I tried apt-get source geki2but I getReading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to find a source package for geki2I assume that /etc/apt/sources.list needs some additional entry. I run lenny.
Apart from that could someone explain to me what is the importance of files *.dsc , *.tar.gz and *.diff.gz in every package ? I assume *.tar.gz is the source. Is this independent from Debian ? I assume also that *.diff.gz is some patch you have to apply after you expand *.tar.gz in order to get a Debian specific version but how do you apply the patch ?

A quick rundown of my equipment and plan for this particular machine.
SOYO P4I845PEISA Motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 2.0GHz Processor
512MB DDR333 RAM
ATI Radeon 8500 128mb AGP Video Card
Using onboard AC'97 Audio and Davicom NIC
Linksys BEFSR81 Wired Router
I am setting up a multiboot system with several OS's, multiple versions of Windows & several Linux distros. The main point of it all is just to have a system where I can load up a given version of Windows or Distro of Linux if I need to test something or show someone how something works.
The Problem:
5 versions of Windows installed, all hardware configured and functioning properly (including NIC) All Windows versions obtain DHCP IP addy with no problems.
Installed Red Hat Linux 9 (first of my linux distros) and it autoconfigured all of my hardware and has no problem getting an IP address.
Installed Fedora 8 and it could not obtain an IP address. I fiddled around with the network settings changing this and that, covered all of the options, and it had no effect. By this time I was irritated, so I just formatted and reinstalled the whole thing, which had no effect and resulted in the same problem. I decided to try it again, this time turning off my sound card and nic for the initial installation. After the initial install, I turned on the sound card and booted up to install it, then restarted, turning on the nic to install it. Fedora installed them both, and managed to get an IP address from my router.
I looked at the ifcfg-eth0 file and the only thing that was different from the previous installs was that a line reading "type=ethernet" (I believe thats what it said) was not there in the working install and had been before.
Puzzling and irritating, but Fedora was now working so I moved to the next distro on my list.
openSUSE 11.0
First install I tried the same thing I did with Fedora (turning off the NIC which did not work like it did in Fedora)
Second install, left all of my hardware enabled, and made it to the part where it asks to verify your internet connection. I clicked Test, and got this error:
Opening of Connection
eth0 device: Davicom Semiconductor, Inc. 21x4x DEC-Tulip Compatible 10/100 Ethernet (rev 40) DHCP Client is already running on eth0
I finished the install, and then got on another machine and I searched the net for this error, but could find nothing that specifically applied to my problem. I played around with the network settings, tried a couple of things that I had come across in my search (changed between tulip and dmfe, checked the box for "Request Broadcast Response", ran "service network restart" in Terminal) none of these had any effect.
The most irritating thing about this is that RHL9 had no problem with this whatsoever and it is badly dated, and the much newer distros are choking on it.

I just installed openSUSE dual-boot with windows. Wireless works fine on windows. Only ethernet works on openSUSE. At first, it couldn't even find my wireless network. With my friend's help we experimented and tried everything to find the driver for my broadcam4312 driver.
Later, my friend some update from the official openSUSE peeps... Then, the wireless could my network. I entered in my password and then hoped for the best but then it got stuck on the Obtaining IP Adress part. I know I got the rite password.

I have access to a "virtual" Windows server terminal, which I can access through my Ubuntu Linux via tsclient or rdesktop. Additionally, there are printer shares on this network, which can be accessed from any Windows PC on the network (including the "virtual" terminals); lets say the address is [URL]. Now, I open \printshares.company.com in the "virtual" terminal in rdesktop (avoiding tsclient since it has a Bug #94743 in tsclient (Ubuntu): Terminal Server Client isn't able to copy to/from clipboard) - and I can see all printers fine.. However, when I'm on my Linux machine directly on the work network, I try and do something like:
$ ping printshares.company.com
PING printshares.company.com (192.168.0.200) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C64 bytes from 192.168.0.200: icmp_req=1 ttl=124 time=10.4 ms
[code].....
Is it possible to retrieve the - let's call them "connection settings" - from the Windows terminal session, so I could replicate them under Linux when running smbclient? the IT department running these Windows servers is quite irritated by people using Linux; and will offer no support to those kinds of "customers". Furthermore, if obtaining those settings requires some installation on the client session, since I don't have permissions to install anything on the Windows terminal session.

ccess to an iso file in chroot environment from my usual root (/) env..
Within the chroot environment I have an iso file placed... In my program I need to access this iso file and perform mount and other operations.. But I cant do this in the chroot environment as I have only basic commands here (ls,cp etc.. and no mount)
So how can I access this iso file from my program ? Is there something like a file-descriptor which I can associate with the file exit from the chroot env and access the file via this fd ?

Problem: permissions for rsync and BackinTime. Setup: Ubuntu 11.04, Two internal HD, #1=main, single boot, #2=backup drive. Question: How do I set up my 2nd HD with correct permissions? Background: I had previously a dual boot XP+10.04 with a 2nd HD formatted as NTFS. With this I was able to use my rsync and backintime to my 2nd HD with no issue. My new set up is EXT4 on both HD.
(I even tried to reformat my 2nd HD as NTFS, but that didnt fix the issue) I followed [URL] to mount the 2nd HD and get permissions. But now when I run backintime i get this error: [E] Error: rsync: opendir "/home/myhome/.ssh" failed: Permission denied (13) I did my requisite reading for a newbie, and am stuck. I ran backintime as root, and it backed up ok. How do I run my user version of backintime? (i.e. How do I fix the permission issue?)

It is a WEP connection. I am able to connect fine from the terminal (iwconfig/dhclient), but when i try to connect using wicd it hangs on "obtaining IP" until finally giving up.
Also, i noticed if i disconnect after already connecting via command line, Wicd will then connect properly.

I have been reading online help all afternoon, and it has really helped me on setting up virtual hosts but this one confuses me.I appreciate that 'root' is not enabled for login and the recommendation is that it should not be. I also understand sudo to elevate myself to root equivalent to do admin tasks. However, I would like to use an FTP client to edit some of the files on the server but sudo obviously does not work.
At the moment I have to use sudo vi <filename> I would really like to FTP onto the server, download the file, edit it and re-upload it. However as an FTP user I do not have write permission to the files.

I recently got a T-Mobile Tap and I've been trying to connect it via USB to my laptop running Lucid. When I open up the icon that shows up on my desktop after connecting it, I can't run the setup files inside. It says: The file '/media/HUAWEI/checksetup.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit. When I try to change the permissions from ready only, I get: Sorry, could not change the permissions of"checksetup.exe": Error setting permissions: Read-only file systemCan I tried calling T-Mobile but they said they don't troubleshoot with Linux. They said it's an "older operating system".

I was able to access it by using the following command...gksu nautilus.I don't want to have to do that every time. I would like to be able to access it by just opening "Documents" and the selecting "file system" inside of Nautilus.

I have 4 hard-drives in my tower.Hard-drive 1 contains all the system files.
hdd 2 contains all music
hdd 3 contains video
hdd 4 contains misc data
The root of the system "/" is on drive 1, and I used fstab to mount hdd 2 - 4 under /storage/music /storage/video and /storage/misc I want /storage/misc to be readable and writable by people on the LAN. The other 2, I would like to be "read" only.
what should I set the permission of /storage to and what should i put /storage/misc to.If I put /storage/misc to 777 (chmod 777 -R /storage/misc), will people ever be able to go up the "tree" and ever get access to "/"?

I am trying to use a second sata 3.5 HD and at other times a USB 2.5 HD. Both prove a pain to use because Ubuntu tells me their permissions can not be be determined. They have only been partitioned to ext2 on Ubuntu. This happens on 9.04 10.04 and 10.10
I have searched the web about this found many answers which just do not work.

Is there any smooth solution for this? Why the /dev/lp0 permissions are changed with every reboot?

I recently got an old computer to use as a server and I have a whole list of things I want to do on it, but I'm having difficulties. When I installed the server, I installed AMP, FTP, Samba, CUPS, and some other items. I made a user account called 'nessdan' which (currently!) is in these groups:
www-data adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin sambashare admin
The www-data group was added because I wanted to FTP my site files into '/var/www/' . Okay, that ended up working out for me. This is where things got sticky. I installed PHPMyAdmin and the files went to '/usr/share/phpmyadmin/' . I wanted to install a new theme so I downloaded it onto my Laptop, then logged in via FTP but couldn't transfer files into there! It turns out the folder was owned by 'root' and was in the group 'root'. The only thing I could come up with was to change that folders permissions so the owner was 'nessdan' and the group 'admin'. I was going to do that to the entire /usr/share/ folder but I didn't know whether or not I should be changing the permissions in the first place.
But the the trend continues! I have my print server setup and working but I wanted the server to hold the Windows drivers, so I went to '/var/lib/samba/' to do some work but noticed that a lot of the files' permissions were locked down to read only and the owner and group were 'root' . I ended up doing a 'chmod 775' and changing the owner and group to 'nessdan' and 'admin', respectively. Well I transfered over the files but now the service nmbd isn't working. The good news is, I expected to mess something up along the way and had already planned on reinstalling Ubuntu Server 10.10. I've only had the server for 4 days now and I knew from the beginning I'd be wiping it clean. I want to know how to set this thing up proper and the biggest problem is getting access into folders so I can FTP into them. When I do wipe my PC clean and start anew, how should I go about the changes that I did before (PHPMyAdmin, Samba Driver Folder)?
