I have 4 hard-drives in my tower.Hard-drive 1 contains all the system files.
hdd 2 contains all music
hdd 3 contains video
hdd 4 contains misc data
The root of the system "/" is on drive 1, and I used fstab to mount hdd 2 - 4 under /storage/music /storage/video and /storage/misc I want /storage/misc to be readable and writable by people on the LAN. The other 2, I would like to be "read" only.
what should I set the permission of /storage to and what should i put /storage/misc to.If I put /storage/misc to 777 (chmod 777 -R /storage/misc), will people ever be able to go up the "tree" and ever get access to "/"?
I'm trying to run my own little host for fun (yes I know the implications and crappy bandwidth is a problem but that's a problem I will deal with later).The problem is that I want BOTH the apache-user "www-data" and the ftp-user "ftpuser".I want both to be able to read/write on the folders I make for each user.
2 computers, Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 8.04. I have 2 folders named In and Out. Out I have set up on 10.04 for guest use. I am able to transfer files to 8.04 from that folder. Trying to set up In for a specific user to modify files. This requires a login. Both computers have the same user name and both have the same password. I set the file permissions automatically from 10.04 when electing to share In for allowed modiying. When trying to access In using 8.04, a password request window is generated with the user name already showing, and the domain name filled in as "Workgroup". The user name that shows is my login name, by the way.
I'm on Ubuntu 10.10. I installed Samba and went Administration > Samba. Added a folder [Videos] to share (this folder is on an ext partition). I then went to the folder [Videos] Right+Click > Sharing Options. I selected 'Share this folder', I put in a name and comment, checked Allow others to create and delete files in this folder and checked Guest Access.
When I view this shared folder [Videos] from my Windows PC I can access it with no problems but when I try drill down into sub folders I get a permissions error. [Attached a screenshot of the error]. If I share each folder separately then I can access them but obviously I'd like to share a folder and all it's contents.
Finally I managed to install my printer/scanner drivers.The last thing I need to do is to add the following two lines to 40-libsane.rules (which is a read only file):# Brother scanners ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes".How can I change permissions for this file or add these lines without changing permissions?
Problem: permissions for rsync and BackinTime. Setup: Ubuntu 11.04, Two internal HD, #1=main, single boot, #2=backup drive. Question: How do I set up my 2nd HD with correct permissions? Background: I had previously a dual boot XP+10.04 with a 2nd HD formatted as NTFS. With this I was able to use my rsync and backintime to my 2nd HD with no issue. My new set up is EXT4 on both HD.
(I even tried to reformat my 2nd HD as NTFS, but that didnt fix the issue) I followed [URL] to mount the 2nd HD and get permissions. But now when I run backintime i get this error: [E] Error: rsync: opendir "/home/myhome/.ssh" failed: Permission denied (13) I did my requisite reading for a newbie, and am stuck. I ran backintime as root, and it backed up ok. How do I run my user version of backintime? (i.e. How do I fix the permission issue?)
I have a problem with my external hdd, I mounted it manually and in the mount table it says ive got rw permissions. But when i try to change permissions it says:
chmod: changing permissions of `whatever': read-only filesystem.

i want to know what is use or benefit of using s and t permission?i have used them but could not understand its uses.please explain me with suitable example.Also tell me about umask command to flag on s and t.
I installed ubuntu 9.10 on a spare computer for misc. backups through ftp. I successfully setup up ftp and logged as an account from the server. Also I mounted the larger hardrive to a folder in my home directory.I am able to successfully write and read to the partition in which the operating system is installed through ftp, but I am only able to read from the larger HDD through ftp.Does anyone know how I can become able to write to the mounted drive through ftp?
I have a VNC connection with my pc, I have made a folder with permissions to share,it is on a separate drive. When i try to copy a file from laptop to the folder there is no paste option on remote pc ( on local lan )

I cannot guarantee that the remote computer I am on will have Ubuntu on it. I want the files to show up like they would over normal SMB/SAMBA networking. I have a netbook with an intergrated webcam running Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 I'm looking for a way to share the camera to a windows desktop computer to use the webcam as if I had plugged in a USB webcam. I want to do this because Windows has some really great software for Webcams but runs horribly on the netbook.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. I set up my main user- admin and loaded the folders of files I would be working on and the relevant additional programs. Now, I would like to set up a second user so that someone else can use the computer with access to many of my files and folders, but not all, which would defeat having a second user. I have set sharing preferences for all of my folders. I have giving most rights to my second user. Yet the second user cannot even see ANY of my folders when they sign-in.
I'm looking for a web based file sharing application. I would like my clients to login and have access to their files only, and no other files.Integration with Wordpress would be nice.
I am using 10.4 desktop and currently got everything setup the way i like it, but when sharing my network folder I can see the folders and everything seems fine then when i click to access the files it gives me an error message of not having permission to the folders. I tried going into the basic permissions tab in folder properties like you normally would with ntfs permission sharing in windows (don't know if thats how things work in Ubuntu but i gave it a try) and nothing would change when trying to change read/write permissions or read only permissions.
Ive got my laptop hindered up to my xbox 360 it has windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. i realy want to get rid of windows and the only reason i keep it around is because ics sharing works realy well for connecting to xbox live.
I recently discovered that you can (ics) with ubuntu which is awesome only problem is i cant figure out how to set it up to stop it having moderate NAT so i can play games that require an open NAT. its probably due to the ports not being fowarded properly or somthing and/or the face that my xbox needs a static ip placed out side the routers firewall on the DMZ setting .
I have a MediaGate MG35 which allows me to play movies and things via my network from my computer. This worked fine with Vista, but when I upgraded to Windows 7 the samba sharing changed and my MediaGate was no longer able to gain access to my shares on 7. My solution was using VirtualBox with Ubuntu. This worked fine on 9.10. I did this by creating a folder in my /media folder called windows-share, giving it a share called movies with Guest access. and then adding the following line in the rc.local file to mount the windows share though VirtualBox:
mount -t vboxsf movies /media/windows-share/
(movies being the name I gave the shared folder in VirtualBox) So I had to do was start the VirtualBox and everything was setup without me having to do anything. This then allowed me to get to my movies saved in windows with my MediaGate. This worked great. I've now got Ubuntu 10.04 on a new VirtualBox. I've set up everything the same, but when I try to access the shared folder, it doesn't work. If I try to access it with windows, it says that the share is not accessible or I don't have access. This ONLY happens to the folder that has been mounted to, any other folder I share works fine.
Problem: Neither Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64 bit machine can access any shared folders on windows PC's, or on the other Ubuntu machine. However, my windows machine CAN access the folders I've set up to share with Samba.
When I click Places>Network it FINDS the other computers, but when I double click one of the other machines the "wait" pointer comes up and then it says: blah blah blah... "The folder could not be displayed: Sorry, could not display all the contents of "Windows shares on debbie-desktop": DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."
Why can the windows computers access shared files FROM linux, but the linux computers can't access anything non-local?
I have little question, how can i share internet in Ubuntu? In this case to Win 7? I have tried Firestarter, but that doesnt work... And please I do not have a router I just need simple connection from my desktop to my laptop, and I dont want another box collecting dust.
I am using a much older desktop as a Ubuntu desktop running 10.4. I use internet sharing from my iBook G4. I haven't changed anything from yesterday, when it worked perfectly, but now it can't find any server, whether it be internet or IRC. I've tried different ethernet cords, restarting both computers, etc, but to no avail.
I have a dual boot PC with an NTFS partition on it that I want to share across the network. It has my music on it which I am going to keep for a while until I find a suitable iTunes replacement.
I also have a server and have mounted those shared ext3 drives ok using NFS and configuring fstab and exports. Works a treat.
With this one, I am getting a error: "ntfs-3g: Failed to access volume '192.168.xx.xx:/nfs/xpdata': No such file or directory" when I try to mount it on the remote client machine. I can access the local mount fine.
i would like to set up file sharing from one ubuntu pc to another wireless laptop.I found samba on the internet i installed it and i can share files but it's slow a 700mb avi file was going to take 2 hours and from what i read samba is for sharing files from linux to windows.I also found ssh that to is slow also i think it goes over the internet or something like that.So is there any other way to share files that's faster or have i forgot something.I only have 2 ubuntu 10.04 computers and 1 open solaris but the open solaris i will not be putting on the network.
I have a Dell XPS with Ubuntu 10.04 installed. I have a laptop dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I can see all shared folders on the Dell from my Windows partition in my laptop but can only see the shared folders in Home on the Dell from my Ubuntu partition in the laptop. My set up is as follows:
Dell:
root, home and swap are on the 1st 160g hard drive. 2nd 160g hard drive has only the one partition: /storage1 3rd hard drive, 500g has only one partition: /storage2
I cannot access any of the shares on either storage drive but I can see them from the ubuntu laptop. What I want to do is have access to those storage drives from my laptop. If I go into Nautilus, navigate to either storage drive, I cannot share them via right click, properties because I don't have root. Basically I am not sure how to go about this. There are a few folders in storage 1 and storage 2 that I want to be able to access from my Ubuntu partition in my laptop. This is one of the reasons I still have Windows on the other laptop partition but I really would like to dump it. Samba is installed and I tried giving permissions that way. It allowed me to add the drives but it had no effect.
I have one pc and one laptop in my house. I have installed windows 7 in the laptop and ubuntu in my pc. I want to share my terminal from my pc to the laptop. I asked my teacher and he told me to use SSH but I really have no idea how to do that. So I've spent like 4 hours trying to find out about shh and how you forward ports and I still have no clue.
a friend of mine who is currently living in a different country has just installed ubuntu on her computer and I am having a very frustrating time finding coherent/useful information about how to set up a remote desktop connection with her over the internet with. Right now I'm trying to set up a remote server on MY computer so that I know the process and can tell her what to do. Particularly annoying is the erratic behaviour of Ubuntu's default remote desktop function. The results are erratic, sometimes instructing me to connect to localhost, other times to my IP address, and usually informing me that I can only connect to this computer over the local network. At one point this summer i actually succeeded in getting a friend to connect over the internet to it, but that has not happened again. Why is it doing this?
I get the impression that VNC is the best method for connecting remote desktops, but I haven't had any luck with that either. I assume I must be doing something wrong setting the servers up: i just run vncpasswd to set the password and then vncserver. What else do I need to do? I couldn't find any simple or clear tutorials. Some places seemed to suggest I would have to configure the router if I have one (which I do), but I didn't have to do that in the summer. Although, it was a different router then.Do you need more information on anything? I can't think of anything right now, I'm very tired. If you can point me to any helpful tutorials then that would be great. I have a decent amount of experience with the command line in general, but I'm not very knowledgeable about networks.
