Here is what I did. Installed fresh Ubuntu and all worked fine.
Sound was working fine as far as I know. Ubuntu start up sound worked.
Decided to install LMMS for a bit of fun but there was no sound.
Removed LMMS and now am wondering how to get back to my "default" settings.

I'm not great with computers. I have no clue how to fix this kind of thing. I went into Alsamixer, and it says my card is an Intel 82801CA-ICH3. I have updated all of the files that needed updated, turned up the master volume and it still doesn't work. Somebody please explain this to me in words I can understand.

I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.

Anyway, went on a wild goose chase for a couple of days trying to get a USB headset working with Skype, which I achieved, then I was informed today not required but built in mic and speaker was. Hmm. So, I succeeded in screwing things up when really didn't have time to fix it and now completely stumped.
Problem: Speaker works fine but front headphone socket now dead. Cuts out speaker but no sound. Headphone socket essential for user's day to day computing.
Tech details. Compaq 610 running Ubuntu Hardy 64bit.
Results of cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Code:
Codec: IDT 92HD71BXX
Codec: Generic 11c1 ID 1040
* Preferences in System->Preferences->Sound all set to Autodetect except sound
[Code].....
I have followed every howto and attempted every tweak out there and nothing has worked for me to get this headphone socket alive again. It was working fine before. Bottom line:

New Compaq 610. All good so far but the fan seems to be on continually. Checked load cycle count and seems to be okay so far.
Any ideas? It wasn't doing this before and don't remember doing anything to make it happen but I have been tweaking a bit while setting up the machine.
Hardy 8.04.3 LTS (rocks!)

I'm trying to install a 1GB RAM stick into my laptop. The laptop comes with a 2x256MB setup. Only one of the sticks is physically accessible. So the maximum memory in the specs is 1.25GB. The stick is PC2700, same as the old stick. I am sure it is installed correctly. I took all static precautions. The BIOS recognizes the RAM - 1.25GB total. But Ubuntu just won't. I've got both 9.10 x64 and 9.04 x32 installed. Neither will boot. Memtest only shows the 768k of base RAM, and NONE of the extended RAM shows up - not even the initial 256MB.
I tried turning on boot logging, but the /var/logs/boot was still empty. When I turn off the splash screen, I see a whole mess of errors, which basically stem from the fact that there is no extended memory. What the hell is happening? This is the second RAM stick I've tried, so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I only have two days to decide whether to return it!

I have a Compaq Presario R4000 running Ubuntu Linux 9.10 karmic. The system runs very hot and one of the fans is wither never running or always running at the slowest speed. For a while I thought the fan was dead but I just updated the BIOS (Phoenix BIOS) and during the update, that fan suddenly kicked in at full speed! How can I get that fan to spin up during normal usage? I have tried sensors-detect but all it found was k8temp, no fans... (SpeedFan under windows found no fans either)

Trying to install xubuntu 9.10 on an older Compaq Armada M700. Starts up fine from the CD. I choose English and then choose Install Xubuntu from the menu. It attempts to install for about 20 minutes and then freezes up. I am never prompted for any other choices during the installation. I have WindowsXP installed on the machine, but want to wipe it out and just have Xubuntu installed.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Compaq CQ50-215CA laptop. But, instead I am seeing a blank screen. This laptop has Geforce Nvidia 8200G M video card. Not sure whether it is related to the video card or not, but thought it is better to get tips from people who were successful in installing on this type of laptop.

i've got my friend into trouble in my zeal to wean away my friend from windows. i convinced him to go for a dual boot system of XP and U 9.10. first we successfully installed XP but then got stuck when we were unable to locate the chipset driver - not even the HP website (horrible) had it ! it seemed to offer everything from modem drivers to utilities but there is no trace of the chipset / motherboard drivers. we then tried to install U 9.10 and got an error message in the middle of the installation process. it has been discussed in this forum but without any clear resolution. basically, it said the following -
Code:
[Errno 5] Input/output error This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment. btw, all along we suspected that there could be something wrong with the HDD of his computer which is Compaq Presario C 505 TU. i then tried to install U 9.10 completely on the HDD and this time got the same error message! similar problems came up when i tried installing with U 8.10 and U 9.04 we finally gave up but did run a HDD test from within the BIOS (Phoenix). The result was clear and we got the message - "SMART pass". so basically the computer is not working now because there seems to be a problem with the chipset drivers while i can't get any version of Ubuntu to install on the machine

I wanted to play w/ Linux at home so I bought the O'Reilly "Ubuntu: Up and Running" book. I'm using the included 10.04 CD. I'm not finding much info on installing from a CD there (well, not finding it easily at least).
I got an old Compaq desktop (model 5WV280, if that matters) from a friend. I checked the BIOS listing; it lists the CD as the first boot drive, diskette second, hard disk third. I don't have the password for his account, but I didn't think that would matter.
Anyway, I inserted the CD, did a shutdown and power up. The CD drive spins and the light comes on. Next, the diskette tries to spin and the light comes on. Finally the hard disk access light comes on and the silly thing boots to Windows XP Pro from the hard drive.
Did I miss something? I put the CD in my (heaven help me) Vista machine, and was able to read the CD with no problems.

I burned ubuntu 10.4 desktop onto a CD and tried to install it on an old compaq. It was really slow but got to the popup window that asks your language and if you want to demo it or install it. I click on the try it button, but then it doesn't respond. I can move the window, but nothing else. It only has 128 meg of RAM, and hard drive shouldn't matter. The processor (I think) is a "AuthenticAMD AMD-K6(tm) 3D. I couldn't find the processor speed. Would it help if I tried the netbook edition?

After using Ubuntu for a while I have decided I wanted to do a fresh install onto my PC, however being rather old it (about 6 years old), It seems I cannot get any recent kernels to run on the system. As such, I cannot get the live CD to boot. After searching for hours to find a solution I have found nothing.
Upgrading also breaks the system as well, So to do so wouldn't work.[URL].. with addition of a 256MB RAM chip and starting with a 512 rather then the 256 stated on the page. and a ATI Radeon 9800.
Is there anyway I can get newer kernels/Live CD to boot? I've tried all options i've found in other threads but no go.

I recently installed Ubuntu Desktop Edition 10.10 . Everything works fine till the wifi is switched on. It keeps blinking and seems to work sometimes and intermittently hangs the system. Plus the machine hangs while shutting down whenever the wifi is turned on. I tried out acpi=no, pci=noacpi .
Note:I was also getting rt2800_pci_MCU_Status related hardware error and then added rt2800 to the blacklist.cfg , but this does not seem have affected the wifi and the hanging issue.

I have been using Ubuntu for years. I just bought a new laptop - HP Compaq 621. Hardware settings:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6570 2.10GHz
Memory: 1GB
ROM Date & revision: 01/07/2011, 68PVI Ver. F.09
Video BIOS Revision: ATI 01/05/2011
I followed exactly what is described on Ubuntu [URL] Believe me, I burned image (not .iso data) to CD, but BIOS won't boot from the Ubuntu bootable CD. I also created a USB stick, again BIOS won't boot from the Ubuntu bootable USB (I selected to boot from USB first) stick. I tried with Desktop 10.10 32bit, 10.10 64bit, 10.04 32bit, and 10.04 64bit.
I also tried with my old Ubuntu Desktop 8.04 64bit bootable CD, which my very old Compaq Laptop installed. It allows me to see the menu. I selected "Safe mode" to install Ubuntu. But it gives me the error message: "udevd-event [1412] run_program /sbin/modprobe"
how I can install Ubuntu on my HP Compaq 621 Laptop?

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

I'm totally new to Ubuntu and have just set my laptop up to dual boot. It is an HP Compaq 6720s. I am running crunchbang just now. And am running Ubuntu from the live CD to look at things and familiarise myself.
My laptop has the Broadcom wireless card inbuilt. BUT.. I cannot get Crunchbang or the Ubuntu (8.10) to see the wireless. Is there some little thing I am missing or something that I should set up that I don't know about?
