Is there a windows (XP) based program that will control mpd running on a different Linux server?
I have mpd and mpc working on my text only server playing stuff throughout the house. My wife (having no Linux experience) would like to select songs, volume, etc, Can someone suggest a client that will run on Windows that will control the mpd via the lan?
My system, OpenSuSE 11.3 (box2), has two physical disks in one volume group. One disk is almost empty. Unfortunately I need to install Windows XP as dual boot. (Yes, I know it would be easier to do this the other way around.) I plan to repartition the almost empty disk to make room for a Windows XP partition. The disk is NOT the primary master disk, because that's where my OpenSuSE 11.3 resides.
Will I break LVM if I install Windows XP? Will XP boot under lvm? Do I need to remove the disk from of the volume group before installing XP?

so here's my problem. I am trying to install windows xp on my computer in virtual machine so i can watch netflix on my computer. The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem
1. How can I stream music from my ubuntu computer (9.10) to my windows computer using vlc?
2. What nvidia driver should I use? The one found in "hardware drivers" is 185 but nvidia's site has 190! which one should I use?
I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network.My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI currently have my computer connected to my main monitor, as well as my TV. I am using the Nvidia Driver and they are running as separate X screens. I have currently run into the problem that if my wife is watching videos on the TV while I am surfing the web or something on the other monitor, we really need 2 seperate cursors.Is there some way to have each X screen own a seperate cursor controlled exclusively by its own mouse? Or is there some other solution to this that anyone can think of?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have eventually (a week's work) got my Ubuntu 10.04 to recognise my Asus N13 WiFi dongle (had to compile the source from Ralink with the "y" against the two things it tells you to if you want network manager to work (source that came with dongle wouldn't compile) and then set up rules (for some reason the driver - rt2870sta - wouldn't recognise the dongle until the rule about the vendor and product ID was in place; and the drivers that come with Ubuntu wouldn't recognise it even with the rule in place)).
Big thank you to chilli555 for all of the posts that got me this far.I would like to use the Network Manager app that comes with Ubuntu, to control the dongle. At the moment it will aknowledge when the driver has been loaded (have to do a modprobe), but does not "see" any of the many WiFi routers around my house, so I can't click on one to select one.
My only guess on this is that, to get the dongle to work I copied the config file that is part of the driver source files into /etc/Wireless/RT2870, and this is getting in the way. However, I have tried removing it and the network manager still doesn't work. Or is it because the network manager needs the dongle to be called "wlan0" and it's called "ra0"? If so, can you aliase this?
I am setting up a small competition for a forum where there are a set of programming tasks to complete (in various languages). However, testing it is really hard because when I plug in the device normally, it gets picked up by usbhid or hidraw (not sure which), so the only way to get my driver to pick it up is to unload usbhid ("sudo rmmod usbhid") and then plug in the device. However, unloading usbhid kills my usb keyboard... which, as you can imagine, makes typing difficult, making it hard to develop drivers or even to reload usbhid. So is it possible to stop that specific device from being picked up by usbhid or hidraw and only by my driver?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI all ready have a Debian spam filter setup using Postgrey, Postfix, Amavis-new, spamassassin, and ClamAV this box is a relay spam filter server to our SBS Exchange Box. Currently all Virus laden email is disposed of, and all spam that is not thrown out gets sent to a spam filter account on the exchange server that I check periodically. This is inefficient and I'd rather not do this, additionally I'd like users to have control over their own white lists and so forth.
I am willing to start from scratch on this as the spam filter is running in a VM environment I can plug a new one in and be running in minutes. The issue I am having is that I cannot find any information on how to do this. Plenty, including HOWTOs, on how to do this with local users on the spam box and also have it relay to another server, but not how to make quarantine folders for relay recipients that are access
I'm running Maverick Beta and the keyboard setting "Pointer can be controlled using the keypad" keeps re-enabling itself seemingly randomly. It's not even when I restart/load up a new program. In the middle of typing a paragraph it sometimes re-enables.

I am able to connect to my Win XP box shares but I cannot connect to my Win 7 (64 bit) box I get the usual 'Unable to mount location'. I can get to the Win 7 share from my other Win box so it is a valid share. I also cannot connect via the Remote desktop viewer. I am afraid that if I cannot get this going my Ubuntu experiment i over before it started.

But when i was installing ubuntu i noticed that win vista was taking up part of the C drive (like 10 gigs!) (i saw this in the part of the instalation where you set the ubuntu partition.) View 7 Replies View RelatedThis is happening pretty often. when in ubuntu, usually while i'm browsing the web, my browser will go dim then a box will come up saying something along the lines of missing resources. the thing is, all my desktop icons will then turn to red x's and no text characters on any further boxes will show. when i restart it says grub error and takes one more restart to finally come on. i got fed up with it and switched over to windows 7 where my browser also froze and my computer froze up.

Finally got the network set up, but can't access the internet on the Ubuntu comp. Also, the Ubuntu machine can recognize and access the files on the netbook, but the netbook only sees a computer named Owner-a6012abd6 which asks for a password.
The netbook is running Windows XP SP3, with an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network adapter(internet) and an Atheros AR8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller. The Ubuntu comp is running Ubuntu 9.04.
I have just installed Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and would like to share this computer on my windows network. I understand that Samba is the way to go, but how do I configure linux with Samba so I can share files and printers? I am able to see my windows computers (vista and xp) but I am not able to see the linux computer with those machines plus I would like to change the network name of the linux machine if possible. Please any help and information will be much appreciated. Eventually I would like to server a printer from this linux machine to the other windows machines.
