It seems to be (we have experienced) that 10.10 can't handle having an older ext3 drive mounted to a folder on the 1010 ext4 drive. The files get "corrupted", but afterwards, putting the drive back into the original older 9.04 system, the files are perfectly fine again.

Maybe someone can give me a good lead.I just want to prevent certain users from accessing CD/DVD drives and all external drives. They should be able to mount their home directories and move around within the OS but they shouldn't be able to move data away from the PC. Any Clues?

I have several sata hard drives that I keep files on. They are all formatted ext3. I have a blacx sata to usb dock on my ubuntu computer that I use to go through files and back up and such. I have a usb to sata dock on the windows 7 machine.
When I plug in the hard drive Windows says that it has to be formatted and the drive is "raw"
I can check the drive in ubuntu and everything is right
I tried installing ext2fsd and it sees the drive but wont let me select any file type or mount it. I think because its going through the usb port.
So how can I make windows 7 see and be able to access an ext3 formatted drive thats plugged into the usb port?
I have a external HDD with eSATA and USB connectors available. I want to use this HDD to store my backups. The HDD should be encrypted (my main system is as well).
So here is what I did so far:
1) I used the following code to create the encrypted LUKS partition with EXT3 Filesystem:

mkfs.ext3 /dev/mapper/luks
The system always hang when I executed the "mkfs.ext3..." command, so I switched the HDD from eSATA to USB and then it worked fine.
2) When I switched on the ext. HDD the first time, the drive was recognized automatically and Nautilus asked for the password. I typed it in as checked the checkbox to remember the password in the future. For the backup I use a nice script that I found in another forum, where I can define a mountpoint and then the script will check for previous backups and only make a incremental backup based of the latest version. The script also mounts the drive automatically. In order to always have the same mountpoint, I want to make an entry in the /etc/fstab using the UUID of the ext. HDD.
Whatever I tried, it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? Here is my current /etc/fstab

I made the "none /proc/bus/usb..." entry because it was recommended to ensure correct behaviour of the iPhone. Not sure if I need it though.
I created the mountpoint with this command:

How should I mount this drive correctly? It will be automounted as every USB device, but that should not be the case. I want the script to mount and unmount the drive.
I am trying to install a harddisk, which is already formatted as ext3, into my Qnap NAS box. The web interface of the NAS box shows, that the harddrive has been detected, but I am not able to mount any of its partitions.This is the output from fdisk -l:

I switched over from Windows to Linux. I have an external drive that has basically just media files on it. Are there any advantages to converting this to ext3, or should I just leave it as ntfs3?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 2 external drives that I'm using for movies and they're both formatted to fat32. The problem I'm experiencing now is that some of the high quality mkv files are not able to be moved to the drive because of fat32's limitations.
I'd like to convert to ext3 (or 4) and I wanted to check to see if I can do it without having to reformat and without loss of data.
I have an image of an ext3 file system done with dd. I know that the file system is corrupted but I want to try to recover some files. Whatever I dd it again to the original partition or assign the dd image to a loop device, that's what happens:
- dumpe2fs -h gives me a valid ext3 superblock.
- as I try to mount the device read only, it fails with a bad magic number error.
- executing dumpe2fs -h again gives bad magic number error.
- trying debugfs or fsck with backup superblocks fails the same way.
For me it seems that in spite of mounting the device as read-only, mount command do something wrong with the superblock as before the mount the superblock is correct and it's there.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am hosting a few customer servers now, all of which are virtual machines running on a CENTOS 5.x host. Each Centos host has a couple of extra drives. When I formatted them ext3 they automatically had a schedule of a full forced fsck after 6 months. Do I really need to do that check regularly? It results in a fairly large outage since my disks are each 1TB and there are up to three extra drives on each server. I try to reboot these servers every 6 months but this part adds a large amount of time to a routine reboot.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just rebuild the kernel for slackware 13, everything works, but root file system which is ext3 is mounted as ext2. Normally I've build ext3, ext4 and so on as modules, not in the kernel... but if I do this, then the kernel mounts the file system as ext2, which is build in the kernel. I also modified rc.modules so I can make sure that ext3,ext4,jbd are loaded, but it doesnt work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just recently found an iso for 6.06 and installed it on an old pc of mine that already had 8.04 and crunchbang on it. crunchbang is on an ext4 formatted partition.
When I setup 6.06, it asked me what i wanted to mount my drives as, so i told it to mount the ext4 system as hda1.
whenever 6.06 boots, it tries to mount hda1 but can't because it doesn't recognize ext4.
What I am asking is this: is there a deb or a package out there I can install to make 6.06 recognize ext4? if not, how can i make it so that 6.06 does not want to mount hda1?
I can get past the initial error message and into the desktop, so 6.06 does work.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 and when i plug in my usb drive it wont mount it automatically and is not shown in the nautilus browser also, but if i search in /dev its visible(its detected) and i can mount using mount /dev/sdc /mnt But if i do this i can only copy files from browser and for all other times i need to use terminal again

I have explicitly disabled this function in (KDE) System Settings --> Advanced --> Removable devices. It doesn't matter - as soon as a USB device is plugged in the system mounts it as root.

I cannot afford this as several apps use files from these drives and their path keeps changing after every fresh boot.

(eg : I have to mount the usb attached to the left port in to /mnt/left and the right port to /mnt/right) and the attachment order of those devices may differ (eg: left port usb may or may not be attached before the right.) org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-removable auth_admin_keep_always <-- (action, result).
It seems hal does not give me permission to do this. Am I able to mount using the command line? If so, how?
