Trying to mount my USB stick and getting a superblock error.. Tried a command in the terminal but it said only "ROOT" can access command...How do I get to "ROOT"...??? See attachment.
View 9 RepliesAfter several crashes during videos it seemed like a good idea to fsck root. Downloaded the latest systemrescuecd and ran it at boot. The error message was 'bad magic number, corrupt superblock' with a suggested command to try another superblock. That failed with the same message. Tried tune2fs to force fsck at boot and got the same message. The drive is less than 6 months old and the installed system is working more or less ok. The command I used was 'fsck.ext4 /dev/sdc2'. What am I doing wrong?

Ironically enough it is the backup hard drive I am having trouble with. I was having trouble writting to the drive and unmounted it to preform a fchsk, however now when ever I try to mount it I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Does anyone know who I can repair the drive and retrive data?

Although I can perfectly mount any usb device (stick or disc) as being root, as a user I am not allowed to perform any such action! I have modified the corresponding fstab entry to look like:

It's messed with my KMail, and NOW I find that when I insert a USB stick, I get the message:
"An error occurred while accessing '7.4 GiB CANON_DC (vfat) [/media/Ext3]', the system responded: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdi1 on /media/Ext3"
What the H**L happened... in 9.10, I put in the stick, and could instantly view/copy/etc. from it in Krusader...
Same result with a USB HDD...
I've read a bunch of posts, and nothing really says how to have Ubuntu simply mount whatever I give it to read... That's what I'm after... I made myself part of the Admin and root groups, but that only changed the error message to show that the system recognized what device I'd plugged in.
It's the lil' things, and 10.04 seems to have a few... So, tried to mount it:

The HDD is a 500GB internal SATA, The smart claims that the "file system is not clean" but is still green.FSCK ran a few errors and using fsck i copied a new superblock from a backup location, It still won't let me mount and FSCK is still trying to fix a TON of errors. I'm sorry I don't know any of this yet, but I'm concerned that FSCK could be destroying the data on the drive, for example photos and other important things. FSCK is coming with a lot of things to fix, It's gone from trying to fix errors in free blocks of group #1 to over #3000.. Is this safe? Will this work? Can I get rid of whatever caused this problem in the first place?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am writing as yesterday, my fourth hard drive within 2 years crashed. Is that normal? One was crashing 2 years ago, one in winter 2009 and 2 just within 2 weeks. What can be the reason for so many crashes? I heard maybe the power supply? How can I find out if that's broken? The voltages at least in BIOS seem normal. The SATA controller? How do I know if its broken? Can I just but one PCI-E card with SATA adapters? Is it the motherboard? Theres not much more in my computer... As well, its wired that my good-old 160 GB drive never crashed, only constantly the bigger ones. Here some typical error code from mount and dmesg:

Running ubuntu server (ie no gui) but suspect this might be a general problem.
With the machine booted from the hard drive, if I run fdisk -l I get an invalid partition table message code...

Because of this some operations may be unavailable.

I had a LiveUSB of CentOS 5.5, so I decided the install it.With no installer,I just copied the files to my hard drive.his was in a multi boot with Windows 7, Ubuntu 9.10, and FreeDOS.I updated GRUB2 and it detected CentOS. I loaded my entry and it failed to mount the root filesystem.I took the initrd0 file from the LiveUSB syslinux folder and added that ramdisk to the entry. Now it finds the root filesystem (/dev/sda9 as Ext3).But it fails shortly after loading /sbin/init. It talks about an init error where it says "File not found!!!".The previous lines involved umounting old filesystems, like /dev.

I get the error when I open any of the kernel versions or any recovery mode. Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop is the only OS installed on the computer, which is a Lenovo S10-3. I can eventually get it to go away, sometimes by repeatedly unplugging it and plugging it back in, and sometimes I will boot into GParted, do nothing, then restart and it will work.I have found some solutions online, but all of them involve the error happening as a result of dual booting with Windows.I have made no major system changes recently, so I can't see anything like that being the problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just built an AMD Phenom II Six Core with 4 Gigs Ram a 160Gib / and swap, and (2) Two Tb mirror for Raid (data storage) I had been using DMRAID in the deprecated box but this box has MDADM v3.1.4 - 31st August 2010 from source (on MDADM wikipedia).
I have no permission problems with using the raid and dmraid is un-installed. The raid is working perfectly and is mounted in my fstab with ext4 defaults 0 2 as my options.
I have two exports
/media/raid/Test
/test
Both show IP and subnet on the showmount -e for the server. I can mount the test just fine on the server. I cannot, however, mount the /media/raid/Test error: mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting hostname:/media/raid/Test Using dmraid I am able to have the deprecated box export and mount nfs shares from the raid but using MDADM on the new computer, I cannot. I get similar results with pointing MYSQL's data folder to a location on the "/media/raid/Database" (even with apparmor entries).
I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed (installed xubuntu on top and that is what I run but should not be an issue) on a laptop and it runs fine but I am giving it to my daughter so I wanted to install windows as well, and dual boot, so she could play a couple of games that she has. When I booted with gparted cd it shows the information icon beside my partition (have 2 one swap sda1 and one for ubuntu sda2) and everything I attempt to do tells me the superblock and all backups are bad. I am not sure how this can be since the system boots and runs fine.
In gparted I can't run dumbe2fs or e2fsck without getting the error but when I do dumpe2fs in the system it seems fine. I am pretty sure I used ext2 or ext3 as a filesytem as it is an older laptop so ext2 is what I usually run with. Maybe I just let ubuntu install whatever it wanted this time, I can't remember for sure which I chose during this install. have been backing up all the data to move it off anyway so reinstalling won't be a big issue. I had checked out how to reinstall grub2 after doing the windows install so thought I was all prepared but apparently I was not that prepared.
I was trying to move my home partition on Ubuntu, and the computer hibernated on me. I restarted it up on the live disk to survey the damage, to find that the home partition, according to fsck, "Superblock has an invalid journal (inode Clear? <y>"
It cannot be mounted, either.

Get Access token error. I read if the shadow password for root is messed up, would need to delete it and leave it blank OR use pwconv to start a new shadow password file, then do a passwd root to create a new password. pwconv is not installed. Where do I download it for centos?

I am using 11.3 on one machine and 11.2 on the other (a netbook). 11.4 won't install on either and 11.3 on the netbook fails to install as well.
I am using the same setup as I have always used when both systems ran 11.2 (details below) but now I can only mount a drive in one direction. In the other direction the mount command gets stuck with no error message until it eventually times out. I can ping and ssh the machines from each other without difficulty.
Even in the direction in which the mount apparently works (11.2 mounting a drive on the 11.3 machine) when I try to copy files across nothing actually happens.
exportfs -a was run successfully on the exporting machine, and nfsserver is running on both machines as does nfs client.
The exporting machine is 192.168.1.102 (eeelinux) and the other machine is 192.168.1.101 (nina).

The /etc/exports file on the exporting machine (192.168.1.102) looks like this:

Before, the "sudo cp -r" command automatically set the permissions to make the directory / files can be accessed by others.
But, after I reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 and apply all the latest updates, "sudo cp -r" command set the files to be accessible by root only.
After I copy the codecs directory to /usr/lib by using the above command, not only I cannot view the files inside, SMPlayer and other player software cannot access the directory.
To fix this, I have to run the chmod command to change the permissions.
Does anyone face this problem? Was it caused by the installation of latest updates?
