OpenSUSE Hardware :: Impossible To Mount A Usb Stick As Non-root User?

Feb 11, 2010

Although I can perfectly mount any usb device (stick or disc) as being root, as a user I am not allowed to perform any such action! I have modified the corresponding fstab entry to look like:

Code: usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto, user 0 0 and I have also made sure that the user is a member of the disk group, but without any luck. My system is OpenSuSE 11.2 (with KDE 4.4, but the problem is the same regardless I am attempting to mount the usb device via the GUI or through the text (c/k)onsole).

Hardware :: Unable To Mount USB Stick "Only Root Can Do That"

Apr 21, 2011

Just recently uggraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04... I'm not liking 10.04!!

It's messed with my KMail, and NOW I find that when I insert a USB stick, I get the message:

"An error occurred while accessing '7.4 GiB CANON_DC (vfat) [/media/Ext3]', the system responded: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdi1 on /media/Ext3"

What the H**L happened... in 9.10, I put in the stick, and could instantly view/copy/etc. from it in Krusader...

Same result with a USB HDD...

I've read a bunch of posts, and nothing really says how to have Ubuntu simply mount whatever I give it to read... That's what I'm after... I made myself part of the Admin and root groups, but that only changed the error message to show that the system recognized what device I'd plugged in.

It's the lil' things, and 10.04 seems to have a few... So, tried to mount it:

:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdi1 on /media/Ext3
[sudo] password for dkolars:
Usage: mount -V : print version
mount -h : print this help

[Code]....

General :: RAID Impossible To Mount Through Fstab

Nov 3, 2010

After having solved my raid5 creation problems, I'm running into a new one: the RAID is just impossible to mount through fstab. I get a wonderful "The disk drive for /dev/md0 is not ready yet or not present.
Continue to wait or press S to skip mounting or M for mount recovery."

Once the system has booted, I can perfectly run a mount /dev/md0 /media/raid and mount it manually.
I've already tried mdadm.conf with UUIDs, with device names, tried several options in fstab, xfs and ext4 filesystems, nothing to do, it won't mount.

All this is running under Ubuntu 10.04 server, kernel: 2.6.32-25 server, mdadm 3.1.4 (from a Debian sid)

Here's my mdadm.conf:

Code:

The entry in my fstab:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Label USB Stick So It Will Mount At Unique Points?

Mar 1, 2010

I have a few generic USB sticks lying around, and a few more SD/microSD chips that I use with openSUSE. Is there any way to label/ID them so they mount at unique points in /media, so I don't blast one accidentally? In mkfs.vfat there is a "-n volume-name" that looks promising, but I can't find a way to set that after the mkfs.

Software :: Mount Network Attached Hard Drive As Non-Root User

May 1, 2010

I have Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed on my new laptop and I'm trying to get my backup script up and running again. I had a script that would connect using smbmount with my normal user account and then mirror my home folder to the external network attached hard drive with rsync. It seems that rsync needs to be run as user account, not root, to work properly. Some of the setup info for getting this running in Kubuntu Karmic was from this article:

However, smbmnt does not exist in *buntu 10.04. Is there any other way to connect NAS drives as non-root user that is relatively secure? I spent all day yesterday struggling with this and still haven't found a solution.

OpenSUSE Network :: Root User Has Access To Remote Folders/files Of Any User?

Jan 21, 2010

Prelude: OpenSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop), installed Novell client 2.0 SP2 (novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso).

I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.

Networking :: User NFS Mounts - "mount - Only Root Can Do That"

Jun 25, 2010

I am working from RHCE Study Guide 5th Edition by Michael Jang. Lab 1 for Chapter 6 says that I should be able to mount a remote NFS share as an ordinary user under their home directory.

However, mount requires root unless it's defined in /etc/fstab with the appropriate options. So would the following never work for a user?

Code:

I could define it in /etc/fstab, but then I would have to specify a "general" mount point for the mount, like /mnt/nfs and not specific to a user like the lab suggests above.

Is the book wrong on this? Even the answer for the lab makes no mention of using fstab to mount as non-root user and the above command is correct according to the solution.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 (KDE 4) Could Not Mount Root Filesystem

Oct 26, 2010

I am running 11.2, kde4. The day before yesterday, the system updated and I think there was kernal update within that. I had no problems immediately afterward. Then I did a total shutdown for the night, and turned it back on yesterday only to find this:

Mount: wrong fs, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2, missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog--try dmesg | tail or so
Could not mount root filesystem--exiting to /bin/sh
sh: cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device
sh: no job control in this shell
$

Besides the last updates from the other day, I did nothing out of the ordinary, no downloads or any system/configuration tweeks. Will I have to reinstall opensuse? or is there a way to reclaim my previous setup--or at least reclaim my files and documents? I'm running off of the 11.2 livecd.
