Debian :: Stop Apt From Messing With Desktop Files?

Nov 8, 2010

I'd like to know if there's a way, an option or something that will allow me to keep my .desktop files in /usr/share/applications untouched when I upgrade their programs.For example, I only want Chromium to appear in XFCE (for all usersdded the OnlyShowIn=XFCE" option to its .desktop file. The problem is that aptitude upgraded Chromium and reverted its desktop file back to its original configuration. Of course, I went ahead and added the same option again, but I'd like to know if there's a way to changs behavior of aptitude. I don't want to imagine the work I'll have to do again when they release a new version of KDE in the repos and I have to edit all of those files again. searched the forums for ".desktop files" and also for "/usr/share/applications" and got no significant results in the first 10 pages. The same with google. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Would it be a possible approach to add a directory to /etc/ to keep my settings fixed, the way there's an /etc/menu?

Debian :: Messing With The Root Password?

Nov 29, 2010

I tryied to modify the root password, but instead of using the "passwd" command, i tried to use "usermod -p", without knowing what outcome exactly i would get. But since then, i can't log as root, neither with my old neither with my new password. And i can't install absolutely nothing on my machine.

Please, help me... i have a test next wednesday, and i can't work in my blueprint. In appendix, i've uploaded a print screen of the sequence commands, for you to be able to explain me this phenomenom and to tell me how to solve it.

General :: KDE Stop Virtual Desktop Changing When Click On The Desktop?

Sep 18, 2011

I'm new to KDE and am running KDE 4.7.1 on top of Arch Linux. It's fantastic however I have one problem - virtual desktops. Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.

And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.

Debian Installation :: Installing Debian On The Second Drive Without Messing With The Windows Drive?

Mar 21, 2011

I was wondering. Up till now whenever I installed Linux I've either dual booted with Windows off 1 HDD, or installed straight Linux by itself. However, I recently purchased a second HDD for my computer, and was wondering how I could go about installing Debian on the second drive without messing with the windows drive? Right now I have Windows 7 installed on my 1TB drive, and would like to try and install Debian on my second (750GB) drive. Would it be possible to install Debian on the second drive, install grub on that drive's MBR so I could choose between Debian and Win7 without touching the MBR on the 1TB Windows drive?

I'm paranoid about messing up my Seven installation, but really want to be able to load into Debian as well.

If someone installs debian with desktop environment this user probably also want to use the desktop as a workplace, so why is that not a default setting?

But also in general i dont get it, i dont see any reason, why this is disabled.

Debian Multimedia :: Remote Desktop Configuration Files

May 14, 2010

If i got gnome i may go to the top-panel: choose system, choose preferences and go to "remote desktop" and make my settings (allow, ask for allow, password, and other stuff). I don't want to be bound to gnome (though i like it, thats not the problem).Which config-files are the ones i am looking for?

I did search the web, but i can't find useful how-to's, explanations, etc.Cause what i find is related to the path i described above (gnome: top-panel, preferences...)Which is the app/tool which pops up and says:"someone wants to access, you want to allow it, yes or no?". The performance of VNC is lousy comopared to NX. Lousy is the friendly version. What might i be doing wrong?i usually do it from a Debian-host to a VirtualBox-guest.I am mainly asking for how-to's/docus and stuff like that. Links. Explanations are welcome too. Of course.

Note: The primary wireless router is from my ISP.

Ubuntu :: Stop Nautilus From Managing The Desktop?

Nov 5, 2010

How does one go about stopping Nautilus from managing the desktop? I want to use Conky, but every time I click on the desktop, it disappears. (Don't refer me to the supposed fixes by changing "own_window_type" because that's not what I want, it doesn't work) I don't use my desktop for any icons and I have no wallpaper, it's just #131313. Does anyone know how I can eliminate the file manager from managing the desktop so I may use Conky? (I have had similar problems on different distros with different file managers controlling the desktop, so I assume stopping Nautilus from managing the desktop will solve it this time)

Ubuntu :: Stop Desktop Freezing When Asked For Password For Admin Tasks?

Jul 6, 2010

I often want to have mythtv running on one display while I continue with work on the main display, as I CAN chew gum and walk at the same time. When the task is administrative, such as running update manager, I am asked for my password so Ubuntu (10.04 amd64) can authenticate me as an administrator. Good, but I think I would like it not to freeze the desktop, including the mythtv, while it does so. Is there a good reason not to want that? If not, can it be done (avoid freeze when authenticating) and if so, how?

Ubuntu :: What Msg Files Are / How To Stop Them From Downloading

Nov 14, 2010

I've been using PAN for quite some time - recently installed 0.133 from the Ubuntu software centre. Worked fine for a while, no issue. Then, a week or so, it started downloading .msg files in company with the binary files I was getting. Sometimes one .msg file for one binary, sometimes quite a few. It seems to have some correlation to the size of the binary, that is the larger the binary, the greater the number of .msg files were downloaded.This morning, it would ONLY download .msg files. I could see the decoded binary in the PAN viewer pane, but it isn't present on my system. I have made NO changes to any configuration files, other than installing the recommended updates.

How do I correct this?Can anyone tell me what these .msg files are, and how to stop them from downloading?Are there as-good or better newsreaders out there that I can/should try?

I accidentally deleted a system directory so I had to reinstall. I reinstalled, and setup my users again in the same way. When I tried to copy my user files from a saved source, they now appear on the desktop in mass. What I expect is that only files in the Desktop directory show on the desktop, instead all files in the home directory show on the desktop, less the dot files. I can not figure out how the system controls what files show up on the desktop. Comparing the problem user to a working user failed to disclose the difference.

Ubuntu :: BASH Script - How To Stop Loading Files At Arbitrary Number

Aug 9, 2010

I have the following code in bash script:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
COUNT=1
# bash until loop
until [$COUNT -gt 2]; do
pq A$COUNT [Pemptus].pq &
let COUNT=COUNT+1
done

I did this because I'm that much of a Progress Quest geek that I wanted to have a huge group on the online server, so I decided to make a script that would open all the files for me rather than having me do it manually. I created some characters with the boring name of A1, A2, etc. When I ran the above script, it went into a continuous loop and I had to halt it, then run sudo killall pq.exe to eliminate the 500 or so Progress Quest windows that popped open. Anyway, what is wrong with my script that I can't seem to get it to stop loading files at an arbitrary number? I want to get this part finished before I make any more boring named characters.
