View 1 Repliesi would like to disable the aero snap function when using the mouse to drag a window to screen edges... i like to keep multiple small windows with various sizes at the edges of the screen (i.e. with media players listening to music or watching videos to have the screen in one corner while using the remainder of the screen for something else)
i would still like to keep this function with hotkeys (<super> + up/down/left/right) is there any way to work around this?
I found out how to make the panels fully transparent so I thought I would share it with others. When you set the panel to be transparent in the default Ambiance theme in Ubuntu 10.04, you will find that some panel items' backgrounds are not transparent, but you can make them transparent and consistent with others, following these steps:
Go to Applications (or Main Menu) > Accessories > Terminal.
Enter cp -R /usr/share/themes/Ambiance ~/.themes/
Enter gedit ~/.themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc to open Ambiance's ftkrc file with gedit.
Search for this line bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "panel_bg.png"
Comment out the line by placing a # at the beginning of the line, like this: # bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "panel_bg.png"
Save the gtkrc file.
Go to System > Preferences > Appearance, switch to the other theme and then back to the Ambiance theme.
Does anyone have a clue as to how to make the top and bottom panels transparent in 10.4 xubuntu?
There are no options in the settings menus to set this - none that work ffor me anyhoo. And 'right clicking' on the panels does not give this option.
Maybe a command line, er, command?c
Whenever I log in, restart, etc... There are no panels shown, I have to alt+F2, open terminal and run killall gnome-panels in order to have panels shown again. Is there a way to fix this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI find that I prefer have both panels located at the screen top. That way I don't have to go to the bottom of the screen for one thing, then back to the top for another. I arranged the panel so the regular top one is on top, then the panel that contains the open applications is underneath. The problem is, when I reboot, the panels lose their order. First, the regular top panel initializes, then the bottom ones starts and pushes the first panel down, which becomes what you see in the picture: I would like to find a way to keep them in the opposite order of what you see in the picture, but every time I reboot they end up in that order.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 in Virtual Box and while using Normal visual effects I get an odd problem with the windows. When a window touches the top or bottom Gnome panels it gets stuck there and I cannot move it away from the panel. Trying to drag the window causes the window to slowly slide to the right along the panel till it goes off the screen and finally pops free.If I turn visual effects to none the problem goes away leading me to conclude it is a problem with Compiz. Any ideas what is going wrong for me? It should be easily reproducible with the current Virtual Box software, Ubuntu 10.10 64bit desktop, and the repository versions of the Virtual Box guest additions.

I have done everything it says and double checked, but still can't get it to work. I am using Linux Mint 9 amd64.
In Debian 8.1 with KDE, I don't find how to disable the automatic resizing of windows when the mouse drags a window to screen edges; seems that this function is called "aero snap".
I would like to disable this aero snap function.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo here is the deal, I have my wifes computer set up to dual-boot Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. She uses a HP G60-445DX laptop, and something very funky is going on.
1. I first installed Windows 7, and it boots fine multiple times with no problem.
2. Next, I install Ubuntu 9.10. After installation is finished, I select reboot, and choose Windows 7. It boots fine.
3. Then, I reboot into the newly installed Ubuntu for the first time, get to the desktop, and reboot.
4. Now when I select to boot Windows 7, it gets about half-way, and suddenly reboots the computer.
I've troubleshooted this thing for days on end trying to isolate exactly what is causing Windows 7 not to boot. After reinstalling Windows 7 again, it once again boots fine, even after I use the live CD to restore Grub 2. It's only after I boot the fully installed Ubuntu 9.10 that her Windows 7 install starts acting weird. All I can narrow it down to is that after I boot into Ubuntu for the first time (after an install), Windows 7 no longer boots properly.
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 yesterday on my computer. I had Windows XP and Windows 7 (I deleted the Windows 7 partition and installed Ubuntu 9.10). However, after installing Ubuntu, I couldn't access the grub boot menu. So I googled, and I found out how to make the menu show up again. That was okay. But Windows XP didn't show up. So I googled a bit more, searched the forums, and I added the following entry to my 40_custom file code...
As far as I know, that should work. The uuid I entered there is the one that gparted told me was the uuid of the partition. However, this isn't working. I get a disk read error when I try to boot my Windows XP.
According to my gparted, my Windows XP drive is inside an extended partition? I wonder if that has any influence on why I'm getting the disk read error, or anything. It's either that, or my 40_custom entry is wrong. I've been trying to sort this out for a while now, and I'm afraid I'm not getting anywhere with it.
I've noticed this issue for a long time now, and it's always bothered me. Whenever I have to open a file within a program or upload something to a website, etc., the window that pops up is always HUGE. The reason is due to the list of file types at the bottom. Instead of cutting off with an ellipsis at some point, every single applicable file type is listed. I can't resize these windows, either, so they always take up my entire screen. Is there any way to fix this so that these kinds of windows are a more reasonable size?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to find a way to make my Windows key the shortcut to opening my start panel in Lubuntu. I've found easy instructions for Ubuntu, but Lubuntu doesn't have the keyboard shortcuts utility that Ubuntu has (at least I can't find it).
I found some instructions for editing a config file but I can't find the command for opening the panel, and I've seen conflicting information about how the Windows key is written (some say W, some say Super_L), so I hesitate to start playing around with that file when I'm only guessing.
if this isnt correct place to ask my question, forum seems large and im not familiar with it yet. I would like to draw to windows with conky. I allready have an idea with launching conky ~/. config1 & conky ~/.config2 and this should work but is it possible to have 2 conky windows without launching second instance of conky ?
