and also, is there some way to have my storage partition always mounted? each time i restart i lose my music library in rhythembox, and have to redirect it to my music folder on my storage drive.
I have a bunch of files on a Ubuntu box, which have various characters in their filenames that Windows doesn't accept (mostly ":" and "*", but possibly others).What's the simplest way to get these all renamed and moved to a Windows machine? It's OK to replace these characters with something like "[colon]" and "[asterisk]".

This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. However I have discovered how to do it and I wanted to post it, in hopes it will make things easier for other newbies.This allows me to see every TYPE of document in /dev/sda8/Media (windows My Documents folder) without having to see any of the folders (My Music, My Pictures, etc).

View 8 Replies View RelatedI brought my netbook so I could continue to keep up with my homework, which amounts to a lot of typing and editing some TIF files.
Problem: Windows 7 isn't compatible with the router/modem I have access to, so I have no internet access in the apartment we've rented. I know that it works, because I'm using the apartment owner's ancient anemic desktop. Can't do homework on this though.
Problem 2: I have Windows 7 Starter, so I can't use compatibility mode, so I can't use Wubi.
Problem 3: I don't have an optical drive and have just a 512mb flash drive which may not work, so I'm not sure how to fix this.
Problem 4: I don't have a Windows 7 backup disc; never received one.
Problem 5: My dad works with copyright and intellectual property so he'd notice if I pirated Windows and would be extremely not okay with it.
I could probably buy a bigger flash drive if I really had to, hopefully they're not too expensive. I am most comfortqble with Ubuntu but I will use whatever will run the Gimp (or some TIF editor) and Firefox. I cannot afford to get 3 weeks behind on my homework.I've only been off the plane for a few hours and am trying to get used to the French keyboard, so I apologize for any typos that slipped through.

I've asked some questions about Debian in the past, but I decided to just go ahead and start simple, with Ubuntu, then moving up once I've got the hang of things. So, I want to use Ubuntu 9.10 as a fileserver for my network, which consists of 3 Windows PCs and 1 Mac. I have a few ideas on where to go, Samba being my first package install, but I'm not too sure where to go from there. Could someone help me out? I love to RTFM, so if you'd point me kindly in those directions, I'll be glad to jump right on that too.

On first glance it is superior to FreeNX because it does incorporate theme and style into the remote session. On longer usage it gets more and more trouble connecting. Basic commands like RestoreSession and Terminate do not work, but get the same reply.

Since a few month, I upgraded my configuration to an Acer Aspire E 17 laptop. I dropped the Windows 8 that was installed inside by default. Right now my hard disk looks like that :
- A Windows 10 Installation form the final released version's iso
- A Debian 8.1 Installation with Gnome 3.x as desktop
As I am a developper, I enjoy Debian, the power, and the capabilities unlocked with Linux systems. However, I still need my Windows installation for design work, making templates, etc. For now, I need to boot Debian if I want to code, and to boot Windows if I want to use some proprietary programs such as Adobe's softwares. For a lot of reasons I can explain, I don't want to use alternative like Gimp, and I don't want to run so big softwares under Wine.
So, I want to do the following : I want to create a little partition formatted in ext4 on my disk (something like 10gb ?) and make this partition running my local configuration of Apache 2. This way, I could run my webserver, with the same files both on Debian (when I need to code) and Windows (when I need to design / template and to test some stuffs into my templates files). I could mount this partition under Windows using ext2fsd program, but this way of thinking supposes there is both Apache's linux binaries and Apache's windows binaries to run and manage the server in this partition (making something like a " portable " version ?) .

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

I basically want certain folders to deny access to all clients exept those that supply the correct user name and password. I tried following the directions here (for the basic authentication), but its not working. Someone kind enough to help out a confused person like myself?
I posted this yesterday, but my post completely disappeared (I looked high and low -- nothing.)
I am using Ubuntu Server 10.04, all the latests updates.
For an FTP Server, I use ProFTP.
One specific directory, and it's subdirectories on my server will not download at a reasonable rate. They move at about 17-50KBPS.
All other folders work fine, at around 1.5-2.5MBPS.
What is going on? I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. The files being transfered are in a directory under home. They should have no permissions issues (I reapplied the permissions I want already), I tried restarting ProFTP, the files vary in sizes (from a few kilobytes to about 120 megabytes).
I use Webmin for most web management.
I am not having overload issues with my network card or CPU utilization while downloading these files. They are being accessed from the local network.
This issue is taxing because the files in question are backup files.
is there any way to make files and folders hidden?

For example, if I 'ls' a directory, I want to see files 'a', 'b', and 'c'. But if another user does 'ls' in the same directory, I only want them to be able to see 'a' listed.I know I can use 'chmod +700' to make certain files not able to be read/written, but the filename would still appear in a 'ls'.I know I can put certain files inside of a '.hidden' file in the folder, but then it would be hiEdit : I'd also like to mention that the users that connect to the NAS could be coming from Windows or Mac operating systems. Everything is on ssd now, but I want to know how can I split my home directory to make config folders (like .thunderbird, .mozilla, .purple) to use ssd (for very fast response), and put movies, pictures, downloads and other folders to use hdd (a lot of space). Simply mounting hdd as /home is not a good option, becouse config files would be on hdd also. Should I mount (or link) all folders like /home/username/Videos to hdd, or is there a better solution?
