I Have 10.04 LTS I want to make a more secure storage with 3 PATA 300GB disks. I think a raid5 is the best. I don't need to boot or have a system on the storage volumes.i have find some guides, but they are for raid on system-disk and make them bootable, and seems to be to complicated for me.
I have made ext4 volumes on them and flaged them as raid in gparted.
I am running a multi-boot system of Ubuntu 11.04, Windows 7 and Windows XP. Win 7 and XP are on SDA, file storage on SDB and Ubuntu on SDC. When I boot into Ubuntu it does not see SDA or SDB.
Running fdisk -l produces the following information:
sudo fdisk -l

I have seen in another forum that this is likely to be caused by Windows partitions being misaligned. Is there an easy way to adjust the partitions to allow Ubuntu to see the Windows folders and files?
I'm trying to find a program that will allow me to run my own server for secure storage. Ideally, this server will allow me to set up separate users. I've heard of solutions that will automatically email the user when a file is placed in their folder, and the email will contain a link with a session ID that expires after a preset time.
Security is a big deal here as well. Something above and beyond SSL would be ideal, like GPG or PGP, so nothing is ever transmitted in plain text.
This would be a server that is accessible from the internet, and would probably be running on a CentOS system.
A vague description, I know. I'm going off of what others have told me they've seen/used in the past. Now I have a boss that wants to use something similar, but trying to find anything that sounds like this has proven quite difficult. I'm hoping someone here knows of something that might work.

There's one hdd with one single partition, 300GB size and I want to create an image of the hdd. To make things more clear, I want a mirror of a hdd.
Thing is, I have a server machine over the internet, which has a 300GB hdd single partition and I want to copy its contains, including OS.
I know Acronis, I worked with it before, but... idk if it has a gb limit when creating a image of a hdd. Acronis can backup/restore images of a hdd via internet, if you have an acronis server.
Let's put it this way, I don't have time (liek always... sorry 'bout that, but I'm not lazy, I just don't have time ) to search for a program and to make tests, and I would like a little help, maybe point to a program / solution that you guys have been tested.
- Remember it's a single 300GB hdd with a single partition. I want to copy the hdd over the internet, that's why I'm pointing to a program that can makes an image of that hdd over the internet.
Like... it's not that I want especially a program that can do this, maybe there's other solution aswell. Just feel free and share your solution/opinion whatever.
I've got a lan with a mixture of linux and win machines. I've got one of those network addressable printers that I really like since I can access it from any machine on the lan in an os independent manner.
I saw in the local computer store network addressable hard drives, i.e., those that have an ethernet address and port. I really like the concept of having hdd storage that is both machine and os independent, just like my printer. However I don't know how to make it secure from spoofers. The only filter between it and the outside world would be my linksys wireless router, which has an internal firewall, but that doesn't seem to be enough security to me.
To make aide more secure would i: put the aide binary and database on a read only media, then mount the aide binary copy it onto the filesystem(where?), then alter /etc/aide.conf so that DBDIR is a mounted read-only media, then run aide? BTW i'm not looking for military/bank security level(I'm willing to accept less)

I'm computer savvy and I use various linux servers frequently for work, but this is my first time trying to setup my own. Is it possible to have a Samba server setup so it is both secure and facing the Internet? Two questions:
Will opening Samba ports make my default Ubuntu server particularly vulnerable to penetration? More than having an SSH server running? Does Samba/ can Samba be configured to encrypt traffic or is it sent plainly? If so, does Windows and Mac support this secure communication?
If not, what would you suggest? I'd like to achieve something like a network drive and at a difficulty level that my parents could use this if they really wanted to. I will be storing things like financial information and tax returns, but no weapons-grade secrets.

This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.
Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.
When I try to install Ubuntu, it freezes at the screen where it asks you to make sure if your PC has 4.4GB of free storage, etc. I tried installing from a CD, a USB stick... same results. What can be the cause of the problem ?

So I'm thinking this should work now. However in Chrome I get: SSL connection error Unable to make a secure connection to the server. This may be a problem with the server, or it may be requiring a client authentication certificate that you don't have. Error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR): SSL protocol error. IE8 gives me a typical "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" Note that [URL] fails while [URL] works fine, so it's definitely something in my ssl setup I'm thinking.
I have/had a PC with several hard drives, and a mix of ubuntu and windows on multi boot.The old boot drive died screaming, and I need to start again. (But my data is safe! yay!)
Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?

A friend wants to dump his Windows XP system so that I can install Ubuntu 10.04. His PC has a PATA CD R/W drive and a PATA DVD R/W drive on the only single channel. It has a SATA HDD. The PC BIOS will not allow me to change the order of drives to boot from, only shows the CD R/W drive first then the SATA HDD and will only boot from the HDD. I tried getting the PC to boot from the CD or DVD drive so that I could install Ubuntu from a live Ubuntu CD by disconnecting the power to the HDD, This did not work.
With a live Ubuntu flash drive connected the BIOS does not allow me to change the boot order to boot from the flash drive. I was able to boot from a live Ubuntu flash drive by disconnecting the HDD power. I then quickly hot plugged the power to the HDD so that the Ubuntu installation process could use it. But the installation of Ubuntu did not proceed, probably because it was too late to have the HDD recognised. I suspect that the jumper settings on the CD and DVD drive are such that they are unbootable.
I'm currently running Karmic on a old Dell Pentium 4, and I am having trouble copying files to this box from my laptop which is running Linux Mint Helena. I am able to see and connect to the shared directory on the Dell, copy and execute files from there, but cannot write to it. The permissions have been set to 777 on the shared directory and sub directories within that. The older Dell has a PATA hard disk, 300gb, while my newer laptop has a SATA hard disk. I've read that this can be a problem, and permissions may not be recognized? I'm not able to connect to the laptop from the Dell, neither of the administrator logins work, though I maybe need to do this as root?

I have an Intel MB (855GME with 6300ESB) that I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu 9.0.4 on. It will install to a SATA drive but for various reasons I need to install on IDE (PATA on 6300ESB). The install fails to find any ide drive (I know the drive/interface works because I can install XP on this same ide drive). If I boot Ubuntu from the DVD (on USB) and open a terminal window and parse the dmesg output I see the message "pata_acpi :xxx device not available because of BAR 2 collisions". I'm trying to determine if there's some workaround for this. I've tried various kernel parameters and no joy.

My computer (which is ~ 6 years old I think) has an unused SATA power plug end and an unused SATA data transfer port so I thought I'd buy a SATA DVD burner/CD burner combo to replace the PATA CD burner. But I read the following line at Wikipedia and wonder exactly what it means:

View 3 Replies View RelatedOn an Asus P5Q motherboard, CentOS 5.3 x64. (Separate thread as the other one has turned into just a discussion on my lm_sensors issue). The motherboard's primary SATA controller is the Intel P45 chipset. 6 ports, set to AHCI in BIOS, and all works a charm. Attached are 6 x SATA drives (2 x OS, 3 x data RAID5, 1 x backup). There is also a Marvell chip that provides PATA and also an underlying SATA chip (2 ports) that can do what Asus call Drive Xpert (stripe or mirror RAID) or be set to just standard SATA ports.
It's a SIL5723 behind what CentOS sees as "03:00.0 IDE interface: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE6121 SATA II Controller (rev b2)". Physically the Marvell has only a single optical drive attached to its PATA interface. CentOS has loaded marvell_pata (I assume for the PATA side of it) but I have no /dev/cdrom or /dev/dvd so no optical drive CentOS is trying to use 'ahci' for the Marvell's SATA ports. Dmesg tells me that when it 'sees' them as it boots:

It attempts to read SATA drives attached to it, but it just errors trying to access them on boot (e.g. "ata7: failed to recover some devices, retrying in 5 secs" etc). I need the extra SATA ports, and I could really do with having a usable CDROM drive. I found a driver for the Marvell 88SE6121 from Asus. But the latest driver in that is for what it calls "RHEL 50.2" and the script fails with a "Generic Protection Error". That driver looks for kernel "2.6.18-92.el5" in its base_ver variable in the script. Changing the base ver to -128 doesn't help. I have uploaded the driver for if [URL]. Is that modifiable to work on 5.3 / soon to be 5.4?
I am trying to do the cluster storage with the Rock Cluster storage operating system . I have install the rock cluster on the main server . and I want to connect the client with the PXE boot . when I starting the client then it boot from the PXE boot into the mode of compute node. but it ask the where is to be stored the I have give the path..then server says that not able to find the directory path.
Steps:-
1) insert-ethers
2) client is started with the PXE boot.
3) it detects the dhcp .
4) At last it demand where is to be started by cd-rom, harddisk ,nfs etc.
then I started with the nfs and I have given the lanIp of server.and server is detecting the client but client is not finding the filesystem directory. into export partition directory but it is not taking path.
PATH:-
/export/rock/install it is not finding this path then it is not able to start the o/s from PXE boot..Is there any solution and manual of rock or anyother solution then u can reply to me...
I recognize the obvious need to back up the contents and follow a certain duty of care before attempting to clone my failing pata 250g HD to a 1 tera byte sata. What problems if any could come up when cloning from a failing pata to a sata HD? I'd like to make the switch to sata for many reasons if possible. It is indicated that the HP d530 sff here supports both types.
View 2 Replies View RelatedopenSUSE 11.3, 2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop, KDE 4.4.x, 3.0-P4, 2.5g mem. I replaced PATA-OEM optical drive with SATA-OEM works fine with all apps outside of and except with this widget. No problems until the swap. I have performed some updates and I have not put the PATA drive back in to see if the behavior changed because it was failing. It could be an update but the optical drive swap is my first suspect. This now. If I hover cursor over notifier widget icon "last plugged in device" will pop up with accurate last device until a click on the widget icon and selection of action for the recently plugged in device. Selected actions work fine ... once.
Then it no longer updates the new or retains the previous DVD/CD (or any USB external drive when connected) entry. Closing after viewing but with out selecting an action results in an empty list also. The menu remains empty there after and only removal of the widget and reinstall makes the devices appear again ... once. Then the behavior repeats if the widget is removed and reinstalled. I was wondering if this is likely to be a udev/rules.d problem related to the swap of the optical drives? The 70-persistant-cd.rules file shows two cd's after the swap:

If I delete or rename the 70-persistant-cd.rules file in udev/rules.d will it truly be recreated at boot and might it this fix the issue? Should I look elsewhere first at some var logs for errors? Reinstall 11.3 and let auto detect and config sort it out is also and option but I'd rather not, heh.
