Ubuntu :: Make A File Of An Exact Size For Disk Benchmarking?

Is their a command I could use to do this? It needs to be 32MB (33,554,432 bytes), can be either random data or just a blank file, though random data would be preferable, and well... that's it.
Though also, is their a way I could copy the file in a terminal and it print out the info such as average speed and/or total time it took to complete. I'm trying to fight some bad reviews on this flash drive I bought that performs very well, and since stupid comment vs stupid comment doesn't win anything I need to apparently be the first to actually test this drive throughly.

I notice that when you try to Make link to any file or folder form context menu, It just copy the same file size? even when i tried to copy the link to external storage disk..

I have a partition containing 41.3 gigs of files (see screen shot) but in Gparted and in the graphic of space used it shows 54.7 gigs. I have highlighted all files (including the hidden ones) and still the size records as 41.3

Whats missing is exact size of image.udf. E.g. what should be exact value of $Z ?
1) dd if=/dev/zero of=image.udf bs=64k seek=$ZZZZZZZZ count=1
2) mount -o loop ./image.udf /mnt/udf
3) write files to /mnt/udf
4) umount /mnt/udf
5) growisofs -speed=8 -Z /dev/scd0=image.udf

I'm trying to clone a 2GB USB memory stick to another stick just like it (same size and brand). The src drive has three partitions, one fat, one ext2 and one encrypted (in that order). It also has an mbr. I create the clone using the following command:
dd if=/dev/xxx of=/dev/xxx bs=512k conv=noerror,notrunc
Once it's done the mbr, the ext2 and the encrypted partitions seem fine, but the fat one is slightly modified on the clone. Here is a hex dump of the (broken) clones fat partition followed by a dump of the original partition.

Best way to do a scheduled backup of a server (PowerPC, Ubuntu 9.10), when an exact copy of the linux partition would be made on a disk of the same size? It seems there are several solution, but I have problems choosing the best.

this is in the wrong section, but I wasn't sure where to put it. Since the background to my problem is kind of long winded I've split this post into two sections: Short version of problem
I have a PC that has two internal drives: one drive (drive A) is empty, and the other (drive B) has a copy of windows vista installed. At the moment the PC boots from drive A. I'd like to transfer everything from drive A to drive B, so that this new disk will boot and behave nicely and windows will still function.
Is there any easy way to do this in ubuntu? I'm guessing I can use something like dd, but will this copy the boot sector and will I have to mess around with the partition table? Long version of the problem
Today I built a new PC for my dad with two internal drives. He was previously using vista on a laptop which died a few days ago, and I'd like to install vista on one disk of the new PC, and ubuntu on the other disk.
He has a licensed copy of Vista for his laptop, but it came as a "system restore" disk, and so I can't install vista directly onto the new PC. I have an identical laptop to his, so I took out the drive from his laptop, put it in my laptop, and did a "system restore" from the disk that came with the laptop. I then took out the drive from my laptop, and put this inside the new PC. It boots up fine, and I installed all the necessary drivers and etc to make windows work.
Now instead of using a slow/small laptop drive inside the new PC, I'd like to be able to clone the data on laptop disk and this onto one of the bigger/faster internal drives of the new PC. How can I do this from ubuntu, so that the new drive will boot windows?
I'm fairly certain it can be done using dd, but how do I make sure the information in the boot sector (or partition table) is correct for the new drive? I'm asking this because when I put my laptop drive into the new PC initially, I had connected it as an external drive, and when I tried booting from this there was an error, something like "Invalid partition table" (I think). I figured that when I did a "system restore" on my laptop, the drive was the only drive available, so this would be HDA, or SDA in the boot record of that disk. But when I added it to a system where other drives were available, it was no longer at that same location, so the boot loader couldn't find the data it was looking for to load the system.

I created a VM disk image with kvm-img, but I forget what was the max size of that disk image when I created it. Currently, its size is 6.2G, I want to install some large packages in that VM, so I want to make sure the disk image can expand to an adequate size.

I spent about a half hour wrestling with different website tutorials about how to convert a file with ffmpeg and figuring out how to get all the video quality options right. Then I discovered you can just use the -sameq option and it figures it all out for you if you don't want to change the vid quality but just want it in another format. Thought I'd leave this on the site in case anyone else finds himself in the same boat.

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.
I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.

a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?

I've noticed that emacs does not notice when an open file is changed on disk (unlike ,say, geany). Is there any way of making it watch for changes of files on disk?

I'm using andLinux and for whatever reason, emacs seems to think that the file I'm editing has been changed every time I try to edit/save and keeps reprompting me. Very annoying. Is there a way to make emacs stop checking the file on the disk?

I wrote a very simple script to compile a Tex document and open the resulting PDF output file. The problem I have is that every now and then there are multiple PDF files in the same directory. For example if I have a file called test.tex I run my script and it compiles the test.tex and creates a file called test.pdf If there are only one tex and pdf file in this folder there is no problem. If there is also a 1.pdf in this folder the test.tex will compile and 1.pdf will open.
My question is: is there a way to open the exact pdf file that was created by the .tex file?
My script file is this:
#!/bin/sh
pdflatex *.tex
gnome-open *.pdf

I am running Fedora 14, 64 bit. For running Skype, I've installed all the 32 bit libraries needed, using this command:
yum -y install libXv.i686 libXScrnSaver.i686 qt.i686 qt-x11.i686 pulseaudio-libs.i686 pulseaudio-libs-glib2.i686 alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686
Everything is cool, till I realized, that I still hadn't configured yum to keep downloaded rpm's in the cache :-( And I am ALWAYS keeping the downloaded rpm's !!! I have the filenames from the terminal, but can't figure out how to download them again (easily). I immediately thought of yumdownloader, but it doesn't work as I need it to:
# yumdownloader libxml2-2.7.7-2.fc14.i686.rpm
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
No Match for argument libxml2-2.7.7-2.fc14.i686.rpm
Nothing to download
Maybe I need the contrary to yum whatprovides ? Is there any way to easily do it? (I was quite successful with wget, but I am still missing 11 packages which I can't find them in the repo.

I have a file in some obscure directory that I want to open and edit. I don't want to do something like this...
vim ~/foo/bar/blah/doh/ugh.txt
I'd rather be able to say find this file and open it. I know there are commands like locate and find to find a file or directory, but I'm not sure whether these can (or even should) be utilized in what I'm trying to do. Basically, what is the simplest way to open a file with a program w/o specifying its exact location? (In cases where there isn't another file with the same name in the entire system, and cases where there are multiple).

I've got a big text file in which I know have probably made some typos (LaTeX). Sometimes I rewrite sentences several times and then end up with double pieces like "the the" or "is is" without noticing it. Most spell checkers that I can use in LaTeX are very basic so they do not notice these grammar errors. Is there a way that I can search for these repetitions by hand using sed or awk or something along these lines? Is there an app for that?

Create a copy of the file above and call it commands.sorted. Use the vi command to manually sort this file. I.e. use yy to copy a line, P or p to paste a line, and dd delete a line. Order the commands with the two lines starting with double quotes first. Then list the rest of the command in alphabetical order.
Anyone have any ideas what he's talking about? Can I copy a file and rename it at the same time while copying it to the same exact directory again? Now sure what the two lines things means either. I have an email out to him but it usually takes a long time for him to answer me. I got alot of work to do so everytime I get hung up it kills me.

I want to copy all files with the name XYZ* into one folder. The problem is that the files are in different subfolders and that not even the depth of the folder structure is the same for all files. Luckily, at least each file has a unique name.
Of course, I thought about the cp command but I guess the depth of the folder structure needs to be the same for this to work.

When I try to compile some Java code on Ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6+) using make and a Makefile.
I get an error indicating that the make utility cannot execute the java compile command (javac).
The error reads: /bin/bash: line 6: .: /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac: cannot execute binary file
I am executing make as root. I have enabled permissions on all directories in the path /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac and on javac itself.
I get this error whether using a jdk installed via ubuntu apt-get, or whether I install the jdk myself. And I get it using either Java 1.5 or 1.6
My machine has an 80386 processor. I notice the make utility is built for i686-pc-linux-gnu
However, I can manually compile using javac.
I can compile calling javac from within a bash script.
I can compile using the java compiler gcj from the command line: gcj --main=HelloWorld HelloWorld.java -o HelloWorld.exe
But I cannot compile java code from the makefile. Any reasons why I might be getting this error?
