I have a logical partition formatted with NTFS and created (from Windows) after Ubuntu 9.10 was installed. It's name is "Volume". Now, it doesn't show under places nor nautilus. I think it is shown when using the Live CD again. It is shown in Volume Manager. How can I have it show up next to my other partitions?

For two of my partitions on sda (they are NTFS parts) I have configured them via the NTFS Configuration Tool to mount at boot. This is OK - I can see them in Places, Computer; they are listed together with the mounted icon to the right. However, there is also two other partitions listed - that are not shown as mounted - with the same label name. (I can also see these duplicate parts listed if I click on Places ad look down at the various devices attached under Computer). If I right click on these unmounted parts I see there is a greyed out option to Remove. How do I remove these duplicate partitions?
View 1 Replies View RelatedActually, Nautilus allows two instances of the same folder, or two folders with the same name in the same directory, as long as one is hidden (with the .prefix) and the other is shown. It happens that, if during a download (through a download manager or a torrent client) the user adds the . prefix to the download folder, another will be automatically created by the application (let's say Transmission for example) and the download would continue to that new folder. If any renaming happens (or if the original folder is restored), the download will resume to the folder with whichever initial name. Eventually, the user will be left with an unusable/corrupt complete download.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAround 2008 i seem to remember PartEd on the command-line was able to rescue deleted partitions and gave a choice of whether to recover the partition as a Primary or Logical Partition. I have tried testdisk but didn't really grok what i was doing. I successfully moved a "Windows Recovery" partition to the end of my hard-drive, immediately after the drive's Extended Partition.

With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem. As given in [URL] I want to create a new logical volume in 53 Gb filesystem which I want to use as space for virtual disk to install guest OS's in KVM. Currrently 53 GB filesystem is mounted as /media/3467BH89JK789 but this does not work well with KVM. how do I create this logical volume out of 53 Gb filesystem partition and add proper selinux info and do I add to vg_vostrolx volume group and in a different volume group?

sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

I want to give Mandriva 2010 a shot, and I want to resize my 500gb /home partition (logical) to make some room. It's an ext4 partition. Do you reckon I'll be safe resizing it from the Mandriva installer? or should I use an Ubuntu LiveCD first?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have googled and looked around on the forums but I couldn't find anything that directly answers my question. I have a dual boot set up with Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. My hard drive is partitioned into dev/sda1 (where Vista resides) and dev/sda2 (where Ubuntu resides) and /dev/sda4 which I use as a shared hard drive for the two operating systems.
When I first installed Ubuntu on dev/sda2 I used gparted to make /dev/sda2 a 10 GB partition becuase I wanted to try putting ubuntu on a very small partition. Since then I used gparted to expand /dev/sda2 to 32GB. But when I use System Monitor (System--->Adminstrative----->System Monitor) it shows only that the /dev/sda2 space is 10GB (and says that there are only 2.9 GB) remaining unused. Yet when I use gparted to look at the partitions, it says that /dev/sda22 is 32 GB with 3.9 GB remaining unused.
I am wondering if anyone knows why they show two different sizes and what I can do to fix the size being shown. When I tried to make a tar gz back up of my system iit returned a message warning me that my /dev/sda2 partition was almost full because it put the 1.5 GB tar gz file in my home drive (which I suppose the system monitor only sees as a 10 GB space that already has 7 GB in it).
This is my partition table....(in the image) Now I would like to install windows in the unpartitioned space after a long time..... I tried but could not do that. I understood that Windows needs only primary partitions!
So I tried to convert this logical one into primary, but of no use... Is it possible to convert that unpartitioned space which is under logical drive to a primary one!
i'm trying to install windows 7 and after googling around found that marking the partition as primary would do the job.. so how to do it??

I have been running a dual boot system for a while now and I haven't logged onto the Windows side for quite a while. I'm ready to whack it.
What I want to do is get rid of sda1, sda2, sda3 partitions(all Windows related) - migrate my Linux install(sda5) to a Primary partition, migrate the swap out of the extended partition, and then make everything else my "data"(ext4) partition...so basically go to 2 primary partitions and a swap.
I know how to ultimately get to my one big "data" partition, but the part I'm not so sure or comfortable with is whacking the current Primary partitions and migrating the Ubuntu install to the new primary partition.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've always been a fan of Fedora since the first distro. I remember downloading 4 cds and then relizing that I only needed one. ;D Anyways, I've been using Ubuntu for years. I've gotten tired of the Ubuntu fan boys and just the responses I get from saying that Ubuntu was my distro. I've moved to Fedora to simply learn and understand the yum system which I already enjoy using in the terminal.
All of that set aside, I've kept my Ubuntu /home partition (ext4) in tact as I always do moving from distro to distro and have never had a problem. The thing is, all the distros I've tried have deb based. Now, my /home partition is roughly 56gbs. Nautilus shows free space as 8gbs currently on my parition so I know the files are still there but why won't Fedora read them? It must be a permission thing, but what? If I must loose my /home it's fine, however I'd much prefer not to.
I want to install Ubutn-Server-9.04 on a disk.
This old windows-used disk has three patitions:
1 # -- Primary NTFS
2 # -- Logical NTFS
3 # -- Logical FTA32
I plan to install Ubuntu on 1# Partition and override the old OS-Windows7. but the Data on 2# and 3# partition can still be preserved?
I'm trying to convert big ext4 partition to logical. I was able to do that with Arconis Disk Director Home 11 with swap and ext3 partition, but it doesn't recognize ext4.
Unfortunately I can't copy 2TB data to another HD Now I have:
Pri /boot ext3
Log / ext3
Log swap swap
Pri /media/X ext4 <- 2TB
When I do that I be able to install Ubuntu Server next to CentOS. And I will add partition /home(ext4) for both and "/"(ext4) for Ubuntu.
My disk partitions are as following:

There already exist an os XP before my installing of ubuntu.When I installed my ubuntu 9.10, I selected to install grub2 on the logical partition sda7. But when I typed command sudo dd if=/dev/sda7 of=mbr bs=512 count=1, I found that the file mbr was eerily full of zero bytes. How does this happen? Or grub2 can't be installed on a logical partition? But it works very well along with win7 rather than XP.

I'm currently dual booting Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.10 each on primary partitions. Then on the other 2 partitions I have the manufacturer recovery partition (which I am not sure I should remove...), and then a partition for storage and files. Now I want an Arch Linux installation on the hard drive, but obviously I cannot create a new primary partition because I already have 4. I found out that linux can run from a logical partition (which you can have multiple of)..However I do not want to format my Ubuntu partition and I'd prefer to keep the data on there all intact. Is there a way to move my Ubuntu installation (on the primary partition) to an extended partition where I could put multiple logical partitions for multiple linux installations?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm multi-booting with Windows 7 x64 and (at least) Linux Mint. Because I hadn't yet made a backup of my MBR, when I installed Linux Mint on a logical partition, I told the installer to put GRUB on the partition instead of in the MBR. This turned out to be useless, as I need to use GRUB from a boot disk to get into the GRUB I installed. Before installing it in the MBR, I'd like to get it out of the partition, preferably without wiping and reinstalling Linux. I don't relish the prospect of going through two layers of GRUB when I want to boot Linux. How do I get it out, or what other options are available to me?
