i am running ubuntu 10.10 netbook everything is fine the only thing is bugging me is this keyring problem when i log in i used to log in with my password my computer passw now i have this kind of keyring everytime i am logging in how do i get this out of my system and back like before with my real password
View 4 Repliesfor christmas my parents got both my younger sister and i acer mini computers, model d250-1958. my sister was trying to change her password that lets herself as a particular user log in. somehpw she messed up the password and its not what she thought it was and now she doesn't have any way of accessing anything. i thought that there might be an ovveride system or a reseting trick. i've looked in the manual but cant find anything of the sort for either of the two options.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running edubuntu in one of the classes of the school i support. My problem is that the children cannot remember the password for the computer if it locks. I have it set to auto login on the class user and I have disabled the screensaver asking for a password on resume, and disabled the powerdown options. So in theory it should stay on the desktop until they shutdown. However there is still the option to lock the computer and i am sure that they will find it and manage to lock themselves out of the computer! I am a linux beginner, but i have followed a few guides on the internet. I could really do with having their user with no password, so if they accidentally lock the computer they only have to click unlock to resume their computing.

I entered my username and password, and a few seconds later the prompt said "incorrect login" and gave me the same prompt over and over again. When I do an automatic on wordpress it asks for ftp credentials. I don't my ftp credentials. I was not aware that I had ftp username and password. I am not sure if that means I installed the ftp server without knowing. my root password does not work on this.
I tried searching through wordpress forums but most of them show me how to set the ftp username and password in wp-config file so that it doesn't ask for it every time.
How can I find out the ftp username and password on my computer.
Frustrated with ubuntu v11, i re-installed v10. At first my old authetication password worked. Then it stopped working and i can't make any changes because i don't know what word the blasted system wants. Am i locked out forever? Should i re-re-install v10 and everything else? or how i can change my authentication password without knowing what the computer wants?

I have installed suse 11.3 on a USB drive and can boot from it successfully. The install was done using my desktop computer. I then booted my netbook using the usb drive, linux loads and runs fine, however when i need to enter the password to make any changes it will not accept it. I can not even access the hard disk in the netbook. I rebooted using the desktop just to check that the password I was using was correct and it worked fine.
USB drive is a 250GB western digital with only linux on it
Desktop is running Windows XP service pack 3, 4GB RAM
Netbook is running Windows 7 Starter 2GB RAM.
I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and now if I leave my computer inactive for 5 minutes it goes black and then I have to enter my password. This is really annoying when I am streaming videos or watching movies. I have gone through all the admin and preferences and can't find how to turn this off or even how to change the time for going into stand-by. I would expect it to be in the power management but it isn't there.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having a hard time installing Ubuntu 10.10 (32bits). I load the CD and everything's ok throughout the installing procedure, but when the installation is over and it says it's gonna reboot it doesn't do it!
The screen resembles a terminal with a message like "the computer is going to reboot NOW!" but it could stay like that for hours. The keyboard is locked so I can't reboot by commands, and if I press CTRL+ALT+DEL it just reprints the same message. Therefore I'm forced to turn off my computer manually.
After that, the Ubuntu desktop doesn't load. The screen shows a terminal asking for my username and password to access the computer. No graphics at all.

Have followed swerdna's guide as in the past and my wife from her win7 computer can see and has read write access to all the shares & can print to the shared printer attached to the Opensuse computer etc. However, when I try to access her Win7 shares from my opensuse computer I am presented with a username / password prompt. My wifes computor crashed during an update with a message to fill in a report. It would not respond to any key presses. The computor has been running 11.3 since it was realeased without problems other than jerky video. The computor will not boot it asks for the password but does not accept it, Although I can see the Home folder it does not mount. I have tried testdisk but although it sees the partions it cannot acess them.

One is:
"The password you use to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your log in keyring."
This is in a window that pops up on my desktop after I log in and I have to enter my old password to get in the rest of the way.
I found this: url link and followed the path given in post #2. There, in the list, I find an entry named "uname@host" which shows my new/ changed host name. When I double click it and expand the "password" section at the bottom of the window I find that the password is indeed my new password, not the old one (you can tick box to "show password").
The other is, and I think this is connected:
When I use sudo in the terminal I get: "unable to resolve host"
I went to:

and in the second line what I see is the old host name and not the new. I think that if I can correct this second thing, both will be resolved?? Or is that file even relevant to the situation??
If that is true, I want to make sure I go about it in the right way and not end up locking myself out of my own computer or something stupid like that.
I'm totally new to this linux thing and I have a very strange problem. I downloaded the .iso and burned it to CD as per instructions. I had intended to install alongside existing WinXP Pro Sp3. Everything seemed to be going fine until it the installer got to the "User Info" Screen where it asks for my name, the computer's name, password, etc. At that point nothing I did would allow the "forward" button to work. I backed up a step or two and went forward again to no avail. I ended up hitting the hard reset button to get out of it. I never saw any error messages even though I scrolled through the install log at the bottom of the install window. Now my HDD is 60 Gb smaller (The part intended for Ubuntu) under Win XP and I have no idea what to do about it.

Win XP seems to be working normally except for the loss of HDD space.
I just installed Fedora 11 (KDE) off of the Live boot CD. I made a really simple password when I was installing, but later I decided to make up a much tougher version of it. When I do "start > computer > system settings > about me" and try to type in my password I get the following error:"BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one passwd:Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service"This is weird because it seems like the system thinks I made three attempts, while I only tried once. Does anyone know what is going on? By the way I don't know why it thinks my password is too similar, It only has 3 of the same letters out of 8 Also, this is my home computer, why does fedora restrict me from a similar password? It should just warn me about it but then let me do it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.
Here's the situation:
I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.
so here's my problem. I am trying to install windows xp on my computer in virtual machine so i can watch netflix on my computer. The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem
I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.
