i recently installed ubuntu on my lenovo Y500 laptop and later found that my laptops keyboard is not working. But when i tried using ubuntu before installing it via my pendrive everything seemed to work perfectly.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just reinstalled Debian 8.3.0 "Jessie" on my laptop using KDE as the desktop environment instead of GNOME. Using GNOME I had no problems with the keyboard or mousepad but now changing to KDE my keyboard and mousepad won't work. It was obviously working fine during the install but now won't work once I login my desktop. I'm using a USB keyboard and mouse in the meantime.
I've tried going into System Settings->Input Devices->Keyboard and changing the keyboard model. Originally it had installed by default as "Generic 101-key PC", and I tried swapping to "Asus Laptop" but that made no difference. I tried a few other random keyboard models but that didn't make a difference either.
My laptop model is an: ASUS U40SD.
Any commands I can type into bash that could track down the problem.
on my netbook I have a Debian unstable/sid system. A few days ago I did an apt-get (dist-)upgrade which I think also updated the X-Server. Since then my netbooks keyboard and touchpad are not working as soon as the desktop is started (I think gdm).
The Keyboard works during the Grub selection and also in recovery mode (Root Terminal), so I'm sure its not a hardware problem. Could it be that the X-Server unloads the kernel modules for those two devices?Also if I plug in a USB keyboard or mouce they are working.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just installed ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop, and when I'm on vim, I can use arrow key normally in command mode, but in editing mode, if I use them, it print a letter, capital case + new line and doesn't move the cursor.
In putty I would try to play with the different type of keyboard settings (ESC[~, Linux, Xterm R6, VT400 etc...), but here, I don't know what to do.
At the installation time, I choose French/French keyboard.

I tried to use the automatic upgrade to version 10 last night on my Acer Aspire 8930G. Everything seemed to work fine until I got to the reboot. At the reboot it tells me that it is running in low resolution mode because the nvidia drivers have been removed. That is fine except I cannot hit the enter button to accept the message either using the laptop keyboard or by restarting and using a USB keyboard.
I have a dual boot with windows and I'm averse to just reinstalling ubuntu because there is some data which would be annoying to lose.
I have an Asus K6LIC laptop. In Windows if I press function+F9, it toggles my touchpad on and off. I'm wondering if I can get this functionality in Ubuntu 10.10. All other function keys work, except for this one. The only thing I can find is to permanently disable the touchpad, which is not what I want to do.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu on an Acer 5742 laptop and running XP on Oracle Virtual box and plugged in externally (keyboard, mouse etc...) I have lost ability on both the laptop numeric keyboard (only the numeric keys) and the external keyboard when plugged in. This happened while I was working in Virtual box and running Windows XP.
When the laptop is on its own the numeric keyboard doesn't work (only numeric keys) either. I have toyed with the number lock and I have un-installed and re-installed both"keyboard input methods" and "input method switcher" within Ubuntu software centre to with no change. Not that I bought the damn computer for the numeric keyboard but it should work.
The specific model is Media Wireless Desktop.
Are there drivers? Or is there some other way to do this?
I have connected an external USB keyboard, and I would like to lock the laptop keyboard so I can put a book on top of it.

I'm using the standard xorg driver that gets configured by the Debian Lenny installer and the problem is that the keys sometimes generate weird keycodes or something, causing unwanted behaviour of the window manager (XFCE 4.4) such as creating a new terminal window or shading windows. Could the keyboard be faulty or does someone know of a driver that would work better with this model?

I have a Toshiba A665-S6092. Core i7 CPU and I installed a Kingston SSD so it's up to the job. It supposedly has keyboard backlight but I can't figure out how to get that function functioning. Now, I know this ain't real important but I have a feeling other people might like to have that too so I'm asking. Does anybody in Fedora Land have any experience getting Toshiba keyboard backlight working? Maybe I'm wrong about it having this option, I can't find any mention of it using all the tools at my disposal. lspci, the Gnome device lister, xorg keyboard config, etc. Apparently everything except the right thing. I've Googled until I'm Googleyed and searched this forum and LinuxQuestions.org (which seems to have been hijacked by Slackware fanatics over the last few years) and other forums like JustLinux, Linux.com. I can't remember them all. I've looked through source code that I could make no sense of and wondered why I was pretending to be qualified to do that until I realized how important this has become to me, although it is as I said a relatively trivial matter. If anybody knows and wants additional information I'll be more than happy to supply it. I'm running the default kernel for Fedora 14 64 bit, 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.x86_64.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio XPS desktop 435MT, with Ubuntu 9.1 64 bit version. There is no ps/2 port in this computer. It worked perfectly fine until yesterday I switched it on and my keyboard lights switch on, but no key pressed works from the very beginning Dell BIOS screen! I have tried to use LiveCD but keyboard doesn't work even there, so it automatically selects english and loads from cd... once it installs the livecd version and loads it, the keyboard starts working again (good thing as I recovered my data). I have also tried inserting norton ghost or other dell setup cds but don't work because a key needs to be pressed and so goes on loading grub (which doesn't work). I will try to fresh install from the terminal screen of the livecd ubuntu.

Keyboard still works so I can open terminal and use all keyboard. But, if I hit the touchpad toggle button over and over again many many times in a row, the mouse will start to work and my keyboard stops. Now I can't login because neither my keyboard nor mouse (and touch-pad) work. However, I can access the command mode (terminal?) though through the grub boot menu.

I messed up my xorg.conf and tried to put in a clean one, but it doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure what went wrong. When X loads, the mouse cursor is not responding and my keyboard is dead too. When I boot up a few things are different than before the last update:
grub no longer does the 10 second countdown the ubuntu splash screen has changed to some wierd text version "Ubuntu 10.10" when the boot is finished nothing works on my laptop (keyboard, mouse, integrated touchpad mouse thing...). I am able to get the mouse to work by unpluging it from the usb port and plugging it back in.
applications seem to work fine, (thunderbird, firefox, etc) the ony ploblem is that I have no way of typing anything... Also i have a keyboard icon that was never there before that puts my keyboard in USA mode (it has always been set to french since my install.
