After locking desktop not asking for password I am using Ubuntu 10.04 TLS from a pen-drive (running Ubuntu example). I created a new user account When I lock desktop it correctly turnout the screen (everything go dark). When I move the mouse Ubuntu returns perfectly. My problem is that in any time I am not asked for password. I want that Ubuntu while locking ask for password to login again. I already tried configuring lock down and lock properties (application) via gconf-editor.

I've tried to configure ubuntu 10.04.2 to start up without having to enter a password, thought I did all the correct things yet I get this 'lockring' thing where I still have to enter my password every single time I start up. I get past the first screen where I was having to enter a password when selecting user, (actually never set up a user, just using whatever the primary 'user' is, what is it called?)How do I disable the request for a password for this lockring thingy?

I cannot seem to find the keyboard commands to unlock the desktop in Debian Squeeze. What happens, is that when I try to open attachments in Icedove, without fail, the whole desktop locks up. I cannot access the terminal, as the mouse is frozen. In older versions, I used to use Ctrl Alt Backspace, on the keyboard and simply restart the desktop, but that command has no effect when using Squeeze apparently. I am running the amd 64 bit version if that helps at all.

I can't remotely access my desktop when the desktop is asking for a keyring password. Why does this happen? it means that remote access is useless because you would need to enter the password locally before you can vnc to it. I do not wish to disable the default keyring but is there a way of making vnc work so I can enter the password.

I've been using the Ubuntu desktop for a couple of years now, but I don't have much experience using the terminal.
I've just set up a home server using Ubuntu-server 64bit which will be headless and its main function will be a Mythtv backend.
I've worked out how to use VNC to send a desktop from the server to my laptop, but when I try to use any programs which require root privileges such as synaptic or the user/groups manager, the pop-up asking for authentication refuses to accept my password.
Is there a setting I need to change on the server which prevents remote users from getting root privileges on the desktop?

I am running ubuntu 10.10 desktop, i have my /home on a seperate partition and its encrypted. Today i was changing my password on the all the machines in my house ( netbook, desktop x2 and server all ubuntu) and i didnt want to go in the bedroom to change the password on my one desktop, (pure laziness) so i did it through ssh using

now when i restarted it later on i realized i cannot log on to the GUI. I get an error "Could not update ICEauthority file /home/lynx/.ICEauthority" and "There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)" also "Nautilus could not create the following required folders:/home/lynx/Desktop,/home/Lynx/.nautilus. Before running nautilus ,create the folders or set the permissions so that nautilus can create them".

One of my users has a bit of a problem. I forced password change for this user, and the user thought that it was simply asking for the password again. I had to use my godlike powers to change the users password again. And here comes trouble.The user cannot log in. I have an unreasonably long time to wait from log in, to when my desktop is ready, it takes 40 seconds from hitting enter to seeing my files on the desktop, and about another 15 seconds from then to hearing the opening jingle. It used not to be this way, before it took less than 10 seconds, but about 4 days ago this time shot up suddenly, is there some way to diagnose whats causing this delay?

I have installed ubuntu-desktop and can log in fine. Whenever I start Synaptic, etc and am prompted for my password I am told it is incorrect. I reinstalled ubuntu server and tried the same thing with xubuntu-desktop and I experience the same thing.

I often want to have mythtv running on one display while I continue with work on the main display, as I CAN chew gum and walk at the same time. When the task is administrative, such as running update manager, I am asked for my password so Ubuntu (10.04 amd64) can authenticate me as an administrator. Good, but I think I would like it not to freeze the desktop, including the mythtv, while it does so. Is there a good reason not to want that? If not, can it be done (avoid freeze when authenticating) and if so, how?

After installing ubuntu 10.10 on pc i had it running fine for roughly 2 weeks. i have selected automatic login so i do not need to mess about logging in etc, but recently my pc asks for my password to unlock keyring once it shows my desktop.

I'm trying to use Gnome's built in remote desktop viewer, Vino, to remote to my PC. When I use the vnc client on another computer to get to my OpenSuse 11.1 box, it lets me type in a password and pauses. If I look at the screen on my OpenSuse box it is waiting for the gnome keyring password and it wanting it for vino-preferences. It specifically says: The application gnome remote desktop (/usr/bin/vino-preferences) wants access to the default keyring but it is locked.
Does anybody know how to bypass needing the password for this? I'm not sure how to begin to figure this out. I've been a longtime Fedora user and vino worked fine there so I don't think this is the way it is supposed to work.

when I move the mouse to the top left it shows the 4 desktops. But I have switched it to 2 desktops, plus I also undid the screen edge section in personnel settings. How do I turn this ANNOYING feature off, as I have the tradition menu there & makes life difficult. It locks the desktop to reenter the password after 5 minutes. I turned the screen-saver off & unchecked the lock desktop setting in there also. I tried to search for these, but ever time I did it would tell me it was to generic of a search.

I've setup Debian 6 on a PC and allowed remote desktop to it.
I'm having an issue that everytime I remote desktop to it via VNC it ask for the default keyring password, but how am I supposed to enter this if I'm not by the computer that I'm trying to remotly access? Can gnome keying be disabbled altogether? Never had this issue with Debian 5.

Since update yesterday to kde4.3.5 I notice this am - after logging in with password the loading desktop stalls. In cat /var/log/messages I grabbed part that seems possible.

I just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 9.10. The GUI regularly locks up. I can SSH to it from another machine everytime it locks up. Top shows Xorg consuming 99% cpu. I think downgrading the nvidia driver to 173 from 185 helped reduce the lockups. Before they seemed very random and very often. Now it seems to happen when copying a large amount of files over the network but I'm not entirely sure. It ran the electricsheep screensaver all day today with no problems and the RSS euphoria GL screensaver all day yesterday. If I copy 2GB of files from one local directory to another no problem, if I do it through cifs mounted samba shares it will lock up for sure. Small amounts seem ok. Apt-get install has had some lock ups too.
I don't really know how to trace what's going on beyond installing ssh and finding out that it's totally alive inside. I don't know what to look for in log files nor which ones to look at. I didn't recognize anything wrong in Xorg log. In the system log I look for the time gap between when it locked up and I shut down and when I rebooted but I didn't notice anything.

I first started experiencing it when I would leave my computer logged in overnight.I would come in and find the screen frozen and flickering. When I ssh'd into the machine, I could see that Xorg was using 100% of the CPU and a ton of memory. I could kill kdm, but not Xorg. Only a full reboot would cure it.When it would reboot, my second monitor sometimes would not work and it would take several reboots to get it up and running. Recently, I was working in matlab and had Xorg freeze on my numerous times...always when I had my second monitor up and running.
The card in question is an Nvidia 9800 GX 2.It almost seems like GPU0 (the one running the second monitor) is dead or dieing and is causing instability when it is up and running..but I've also heard that X running away and locking up the system is a known bug.

So is this what I get for not upgrading because the support for 8.10 ends on 4/30? I have 8.10 but it is locking up immediately after logging in. It's a 64 bit system and has worked flawlessly up to this point. Ctrl-alt-BS does not work. Alt-Sys-K does not work. Alt-Sys-R, E, I, S, U, E does not work. Only turning off the power resets the computer. Memtest turned up nothing.

I run 6 machines at our local library with Ubuntu Lucid. Here is a problem. We use a network printer accessed through the ethernet cabling system. It isn't attached to a computer. I want to set it up so the Ubuntu computers find it by ip address, it has a static address. Then I would like to lock down the printer config as each week other printers show up there, all basically the same printer but only works if the patrons pick the correct iteration of it and it doesn't always stick to the default option I haver set up. So people get confused and then pick another one and no prints. I want them to click print and bingo only one printer shows up and it is the ip address I have set up. Ubuntu seems to love to add numerous copies of printers and in this situation it is creating havoc. So can I somehow set a command to lock the printer config and eliminate all this confusion? I hope this is clear as it is a fairly complicated issue.But is reflecting poorly on Linux to people who come in and I want it to b e very stable.
