CentOS 5 :: Stalling, Freezing And Just Plain Locking Up With 5.4 And Gnome?

Feb 1, 2010

I've been having problems for a while with my pc at work and after a bout with a similar desktop I figured out that it somehow relates to the kernel updates from 5.3 to 5.4. I have two machines with identical motherboards (Asus M3a32-mvp), cpu ( athlon 64 X2 6400) and memory (8 gigs Corsair) with different video cards.

My desktop at work started with Centos 5.2 and was kept updated to 5.4 along the way. The other PC is my desktop at home and it started out at 5.3 and stayed there until recently mainly because my wife mostly uses it so I just never got around to doing updates.

Here is the problem, a while back the work PC started doing weird things, it would stutter, freeze up, sometime the mouse cursor would freeze into a cross hair and sometimes completely lock me out where even the keyboard wouldn't work so I had to kill power to reboot anf get control back. I eventually discovered that if I still had keyboard access I could jump to a console window, log in and killall nautilus or killall gnome-panel and I might get things back to normal for a while. I can even log in with another machine to use the killall commands if the keyboard locks up. I checked TOP during these episodes to see what was killing the system, I figured something was running a muck and gobbling up processing time or memory but nothing shows that appears to be off.

Like I said the home system was on 5.3 and not showing the stuttering problems so I even considered that the video card drivers might be causing something, that is until I tried to update the home system and got the same issues.

I had a hard drive failing at home so I figured I'd back up the data and reinstall the main system on a new one so I could start over with a clean system. This time I started from 5.4. Almost imediately I discovered the freezing problems after the complete install so after trying a few things I wiped and reloaded, couldn't mess around too long with it as the wife was really complaining about not having a PC, a 5.3 version. Bingo, now the system functions perfectly, no stuttering or freezing up. I then used yum updates to updates everything but the kernel. This also seemed to give me a system without freezes so I stopped there with the home machine.

Just to be clear the home pc used the standard yum repositories defaulted in the setup i didn't add any so it isn't a 3rd party repo causing the problems with the home machine. So it looks like the updates from 5.3 to 5.4 regarding the kernel seem to be causing me problems.

It's getting so bad at work I'm planning on wiping and reloading a 5.3 version and going from there but that's alot of work so I'd really like to just fix what is going on with the 5.4 version.

Ubuntu Installation :: ATI Drivers - Freezing / Locking

Aug 26, 2010

I installed Ubuntu yesterday to try it out, but encountered some freezing/locking issues. Seems to be related to the video card. I'm running Ubuntu in low graphics mode, but wanted to install the proper ATI drivers. I went to the ATI website for my X1950 (sucks, I know). Downloaded them just fine but when I run them nothing happens. I'm used to Windows so I'm probably doing something wrong.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Plain Gnome Back

Jul 15, 2010

I used synaptic package manager and downloaded E16 (enlightenment)

Then I found out I couldn't get back into gnome without it. It puts its little windows in gnome EVEN when I select session "GNOME" without the -E16 tagged on.

I tried to remove it but that removes all the window borders title and minimize, close, maximize buttons(When I log out and back in)

Then I tried restarting would not boot back into ubuntu until I reinstall E16 in a new created account in root. Its got me trapped and I really do not want to reinstall..

CentOS 5 :: Scroll And Caps Locking Up On Install

Oct 26, 2010

I was given 31 older machines. They are all identically spec'd at 900MHz P3, 1GB PC133 SDRAM, and 100GB HDD. I have decided to build a cluster with these machines and it was suggested to me on another forum to use CentOS. I have downloaded the ISO and burned it to a DVD. The beginning of the install works great until I get to the part when I begins to copy packages. It gets about 30% complete then hard locks up. The scroll lock and caps lock lights on the keyboard are blinking.

I have replaced the optical drive, tried a different hard drive, re-burned the ISO at slowest speed with a new DVD. Nothing seems to make a difference. In addition, I have tried to install ROCKS, and get the same thing. When it gets to the installation portion that looks like CentOS, it locks up with the same symptoms.

Fedora :: F14 Gnome Text/plain Versus Text/html File Type

Apr 2, 2011

I put a text file on my desktop and added a couple lines of text with gedit. File type shows text/plain. Double-click opens the file in gedit which is what I want. I'm using the file to temporarily hold some snips of code that I copy from file to file, but when I copy some html into the file and save it, now file properties show it's text/html and a double-click opens the file in firefox, which isn't what I want. Is there some way to keep the file type from changing itself?

Debian :: Jesise Freezing (Except Mouse) Gnome 3.14

Aug 13, 2015

Recently with the release of Kali Linux on Aug 11th I have decided to do a clean reinstall and install Kali Linux 2.0 which runs on Jessie Debian using GNOME Shell 3.14.

When my system freezes I am still able to move the mouse and perhaps notably, the cursor still updates from an arrow to a hand icon in certain locations as though it is over a link - though this does not necessarily correspond to where links are actually displayed on the screen. I have seen no response to any keyboard interaction. For a while I have decided to ignore the freezes but they happen far too frequently to be ignored, within an hour my system would freeze up to 10 - 30 times for up to 15+ seconds at a time. The only application I am using when this seems to happen is iceweasel and I cant think of anything else that could be stressing the machine.

I'm working on a kickstart install to automate a lot of monotony doing installs. When i use the kickstart install i get an error on boot saying "File based locking initialization failed" "no volume groups found". Then it proceeds to boot up with no issues and appears to work just fine. Below is the section of my ks.cfg for creating the partitions: %include /tmp/partition.cfg is included where the partition info usually occurs. CentOS 5 :: System Lockups And Freezing?

Dec 20, 2010

I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5 on small thin client system with a 80G HDDs, 1 GB ram [URL], I have run into an issue where the system just locks up and freezes and I can no longer access it, cant ping it, cant use webmin and cant view its web pages. The system seemed to be running fine unitl I left it to do some updates via webmin as it informed me there were 118 updates. I really only use the system as a LAN captive network server, and it is currently in the testing phase for this setup. The install went on with no issues and it ran fine, but now every so often within 12 hours it just locks up and I have to reboot. kdump shows no logs so I am finding hard to work out what is going on. but have installed it on 5 of my servers 4x ibm x335 and this . I intend to use the mini server for a captive portal system displaying advertising and promotions to wireless clients.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: ACPI Freezing 5.3 System On ATI690 Chipset

Aug 14, 2009

I'm having a bit of a problem with a CentOS install I'm working on.This computer is an Asus M2A-VM mobo with the latest bios and a fully patched CentOS 5.3 system. The system randomly freezes and I've been able to narrow it down to what i think is ACPI issues with the chipset since the system is rock stable if I use the ACPI=off option in grub. However, when I do, I get messages about OHCI and EGCI controllers not having the correct PCI IRQ or somesuch and my USB don't work. Since this system has a usb keyboard, mice and printer, that's a bit of an issue! The system boots fine but will freeze after a random amount of time, sometimes even during startup (after the X Window system has been opened).

I'm at the end of my rope here as I'm admittedly pretty new to Linux (about 2 months experience although I've succesfully set up 5 systems and a zimbra server in that time - slowly learning when I'm trying to do something) and I've been scouring the net to try and find a solution to no avail.I know this particular chipset seems to be very trouble prone if I look around but the only thing I could find about issues like mine was related to ACPI with the chipset but that supposedly solved in earlier kernel revisions (and I have the latest kernel).troubleshoot the defective part of ACPI on my chipset would be appreciated so I can turn off the offending ACPI "feature".

PS : I also get an error message when booting : ACPI expecting a [REFERENCE] package element, found type F7B953PC

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Keeps Stalling Then Eventually Just Disconnects

Mar 13, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu this morning and don't have much time to detail my problem before my internet goes out again. I am currently running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala?). I just got this laptop earlier this week with windows 7 and decided to put ubuntu on it via Wubi. Anyhoo, I login and then enter my wifi password and eveythings fine. I can surf the internet for a bit and everythings fine. but after a while, the wireless indicator on the keyboard begins to flicker on and off (between a connection and no connection) then starts to stall. The first thing I did was install google chrome (always the first thing to do) and I accidentally downloaded the wrong version A-OK. After I saw I downloaded the wrong version, I downloaded the correct, 32-bit version and installed it. During the download it said I had a 750kBs speed, but took much longer to download than had it been downloaded at a consistent 750kBs speed. I then tried to use update synaptic and it began to download reload all 44 packages and stalled around 38 or so. My internet then disconnected (wouldn't reconnect) and the download failed. I went back into windows uninstalled Ubuntu and then reinstalled it. After going through the first few steps again I began to update via update manager and surfed the web. After a few minutes of surfing the indicator began to flicker than just went off. I then connected to my neighbors internet, continued surfing and then the internet just crashed. I've found that when its just lightweight surfing, everythings okay, but during a download or any 2.0 surfing, then things start to get funky.

I just find it odd that it happened on both versions. They work fine in live mode so I don't know what could be causing this.

I installed vsftp on openSUSE laptop and tried to use that as the server. The same thing happens; initially it works fine but after about a minute the wireless connection is lost again. I need to restart my wireless NIC each time to regain network connectivity.

Against all advice in Centos docs, I built and installed several gnome packages in order to upgrade to the latest Gnumeric. Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?
