Ubuntu :: Install The "msttcorefonts" - Keep Certain Other Program's Fonts The Same?

I've recently been installing Steam on Ubuntu (11.04), and during the installation, I needed to install the Microsoft font package, msttcorefonts. I'm pretty sure that I need this font package in order to run the programs properly, so I don't think I can get rid of it. However, I've noticed that when I have it installed, all my fonts in firefox look different, and I don't quite like it. Is there a way that I can have the package installed, but keep certain other program's fonts the same?

I attempted to install msttcorefonts using the command 'sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts' something happened during the process. To get to the point, all my fonts in firefox are messed up (to the point that i can't read them). In the terminal, i'm getting an error that says E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem I don't really understand any of this yet.

It seems Open office and Abiword are sufferings from an odd problem with there fonts after upgrading to the latest version oof Ubuntu. See image below.

<Edit> Got it fixed. Didn't put the correct res in the xorg.conf file...Sheesh...None the less, this is the moment that I do a little dance around my little space...I got current up and running with only asking this dumb question...Hoo howdy...It's GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT...Now to test to see if everything I had on 12.2 will compile...So far gbdfed is not doing so.../edit>Sorry if this has been posted before, and I will look for it later if no one replies, I'm just bloody burnt out at the moment...Hooked up 122gb hd, and rather than spend the hours reading up on dd, I decided to try 13.0...Lo and behold my 845g didn't work, which I had suspected would have been the prob...So I fuddled around, read, and read, and read some more...Upgraded to current, based on a thread here...Forgot to check lilo for any errors...Hoo boy, what fun...Current changed the drives from hd# to sd#. Had to use my old zenwalk 5.2 disk to chroot in order to fix that. Then something else went wrong. Well, now I know what mkinitrd is good for, . Well, fuddling around some more, installing this intel driver, installing that intel driver until I finally found something that worked...However, I get better frame rate with glxgears than I did on 12.2, but when I move any windows they are a little choppy, plus the little tiny fonts which is rather annoying...Anyway, what else should I look at? Could it be xinarama support which I don't need?

I have recently upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04.
I have a problem with my synaptic manager. I can't seem to install anything because msttcorefonts doesn't seem to have been installed properly and I can't remove it. Everytime I update or install I get the error: Code: E: msttcorefonts: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1 remove the package. Not even re-install works.

Have installed msttcorefonts but they're not showing up in Open Office 3.2. I've tried restarting the machine and even a fresh install of Open Office to no avail. Can't recall doing anything special to make them available in Open Office in past; has something changed or am I missing something obvious?
OK, solved it; for anyone else having trouble, I completely removed ttf-mscorefonts-installer package then reinstalled it; upon reinstallation I got a EULA to accept and everything went as expected.

Got Karmic Koala up on running on my main computer and have been going through Beginning Ubuntu Linux, Fourth Edition. It was printed during Jaunty Jackalope, but it looks like its information applies to most areas.
However, it says I should be able to find msttcorefonts in the Synaptic Package Manage, and it's not there. I double checked Writer and Times New Roman and the other true type staples are not there, so it's not that it was installed with the boot disk.
Has the name of the package changed?

I see some drastic changes on the fonts' of several websites I visit regular. Everything is ok when I try to remove the package msttcorefonts. The question is, why does this package install by itself? I remember that I've uninstalled it several times!

Over the last week or so I ran into a problem that was caused by a mix of justifiable frustration with an Ubuntu distribution upgrade in combination with, well let's just be blunt about it: a dimly lit candle upstairs. Ubuntu decided that it was going to download 50 megabytes of font packages whether I wanted it to or not, so, when I came back to find the license requester waiting for my response, I thought it was referring to those fonts that I told it not to download, but which it downloaded anyway (steam, steam, steam!), so I rejected the license. Instead, it was referring to the MScoreFonts package (which I DID want). Upon discovering what I had done, I found out that, using the Software Center, I could download those packages all I wanted to and they would NEVER install properly because I would never again get re-presented with the option of accepting the license. Instead, I am simply reminded over and over again that I have rejected the license. Apparently, Software Center is a tad unforgiving of stupid mistakes.
The answer, my friends, is not blowing in the wind, but is contained in a readme file that gets left where the fonts would have been installed. To save you a little bit of time, here is what you need to do to get those fonts installed: Open a terminal and enter the following quoted command (without the quotes, of course): "sudo apt-get install --reinstall ttf-mscorefonts-installer" This will present you with a text-based requester to use the arrow keys to highlight the "<ok>" at the bottom and hit return, thus accepting the license. From this point the install should go smoothly. Regarding the frustration mentioned above: I am not Japanese; I don't know any Japanese; and no Japanese is going to be using my systems, so, no, I do NOT need that 50 megabyte Japanese font.

That should do it. Reinitialize the font cache, re-login or reboot and have another look at this site (with Georgia). but when I try to run the rpmbuild command I get this error:

I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?

I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?

I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.
I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala on my laptop (dual-booting with XP) and I would like to know if there is a way to install the fonts from XP onto Ubuntu. I have already copied them onto a flash drive, I just don't know how (or if it's even possible) to install them. I have already tried the Synaptic Package Manager thing, which helped get a few more, but I'd still like some of my old ones.

After upgrading to 9.10, the fonts I had placed in my .fonts folder no longer function in any application.I have tried to re-install them by just clicking on the font itself and going through the installation screen. But this doesn't do anything.I have tried to delete and the re-create my .fonts folder in my /home partition. But that also fails.
Did Ubuntu do something different with user-installed fonts in 9.10? Should my fonts be relocated to another folder?How can I install "after market" fonts?

I want to try Opensuse after trying a few different distro's and in a way or another i haven't found what will keep me using it.But there is one thing i find weird,I'm using a Bravia lcd 32� as monitor connected directly via a direct HDMI cable (no adapters) from my ATI Radeon 4890.The problem is that the fonts during install in all the distro's i tried are not just tiny...but microscopic,to the point is unreadable.Think about a 4 words phrase as big as a dot ( "." ).I don't really want to use my old lcd 19� to install and then connect again my TV (as i had to do for all the other distro's).Is there anyway i can fix that without doing all that ?As of now i liked what i saw in this forums and your support and wiki,and found already that there is a solution for problems that were keeping me from staying on those distros (read multimedia problems,lack of support,compatibility and so on) so hopefully this will be the last i try for a while (experimenting is nice

I'm trying to install the ms True type fonts on 11.04.
I typed the command: "sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer"
And, after a short wait the following screen appeared (added as an attachment)
And - I'm stuck. I can scroll up or down through the EULA with my scroll wheel or the arrow keys, but I cannot move on, I can't click on the OK, and no keypress does anything.
I tried to remove the installer with: "sudo apt-get remove ttf-mscorefonts-installer" and with the Ubuntu software center and both operations failed. The terminal advised me to reinstall before removal, which I can't.

I can't manage to find the fonts directory in Ubuntu. The fonts directory is much more conspicuous in Windows OS. Since I am a web designer, I love to experiment with a spectrum of fonts ornately expressed. I have migrated from Windows to Ubuntu because I am very impressed by its organization and functionality (sadly I couldn't download Ubuntu 11 due to internet connection errors. Moreover ShipIt had terminated).

I have just undertaken my first install of debian after a couple years of using ubuntu. I used netinstall and have made a minimal install with wheezy and lxde. I am trying to install the ubuntu-font-family because it is so pretty!
1. I tried downloading the .ttf files, extracting them to a directory and using the program 'font-manager' (which I had used on ubuntu previously,) and it says they are installed but I can not access the font from any program.
2. I tried using fontmatrix, another graphical program. Same thing.
3. I tried installing the .deb package for the fonts after downloading from the ubuntu repos. still cannot use them. (but I can physically see the font files in the folder, same as with above methods.)3. i tried manually installing the fonts via the command fc-cache -f -v (after placing them in /usr/share/fonts, /usr/local/share/fonts, and ~/.fonts [none of which worked.]) After running the command 'fc-cache -f -v,' I run the command 'fc-list' and the fonts are still not in the list.
