I was trying to install freenx on my ubuntu machine and messed up somewhere. Now I cant login to the system. I get these errors Could not update ICEauthority file /home/xbmc/.ICEauthority I tried to login with CTRL-ALT-F2 and putting this command in sudo chown test:test /home/test/.ICEauthority and i get invalid user: 'test:test'

I have changed my username in my fedora 11. on the next restart it asks for a login with my new username but when I enter my password it gives a errror "could not update ICE autority file/home/shubhra/ICE authority" when i click ok a next error comes "There is a problem with your configuration server(/usr/libexe/gconfg/sanity)" on clicking OK to this error a the blank screen comes with mouse pointer on it.

A. What did I do wrong? Is it not possible to rename a user in Linux?
B. How can I correct this problem?
C. Should I have created a new user instead or renaming an existing one?
D. Can the primary group be renamed?
I just got a pop up that said that there is a Firefox Ubdate that I do not have the authority to install. It gives a link of www.firefox.com to go to for the latest firefox. I checked the Update manager. No update. All of Mozilla links in google say Mozilla. I feel sure this is an attempt to install malware. It came up when I went to cnet and I guess I shoule include a picture of it. Does anybody have any experience with this?
I went on to read cnet and the first article was about major add servers serving up adds that automaticly install malware. I guess this was a case of that. I had addblocker disabled at the time but noscript active. Looks to me like having noscript saved me an infection. Be careful out there.
I have installed vnc-server on my CentOS 5.6 virtual machine. I can connect to it with a java web browser so it seems to be working. Recently I've installed Open Suse 11.3 along with Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC ( made it a dual-boot OS ). This morning while logged in, in Open Suse 11.3, found out that there were important update for kernel in Yast. So, did the update and then required to restart the PC. In the Grub/boot menu, I chose to log-in to Open Suse 11.3, but after a while it returned with " Error 15, file not found ". Luckily I was able to log-in in Ubuntu 9.10. Assumed that Error 15 is always related to misplaced or wrong configuration of Grub in the partition, I did several searching via Google, and found this possible solution HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive . So I tried the " Broken Grub menu: boot to the menu, drop to a console and boot openSUSE direct " method. But rightly after the " find /boot/grub/menu.lst " command as instructed in the solution, it returned with ( hd0,0 ) and ( hd0,4 ). Why there are 2 bootloader in the Grub ? Which bootloader should I choose ? And for convenience, here is my " menu.lst " folder that I get via Terminal in Ubuntu 9.10 :

After a recient update to the freenx libraries KDE on Kubuntu 10.04 stopped working but other desktops like gnome kept running. The problem wasn't in the normal log files, but it was found in the .xsession-errors file in the user directory on the server. After the update NX is trying to start kde with the /usr/bin/startkde4 command which doesn't exist. Instead make a link from /usr/bin/startkde to the non existent /usr/bin/startkde4 and it will work again. To do this use the command:

I successfully installed ubuntu but I cant install its updates, heres the prob:

i have a dual boot system set up right now through wubi. the installation went fine. but then i tried to upgrade ubuntu from 10.04.2 to 10.10. the update went fine, no errors. but afterwards when i restarted my computer and selected ubuntu, it said "error: file not found" it didn't even get to grub. this has happened numerous of times trying to upgrade in the past.
p.s: i have vista installed as the other side of the dual boot.
after doing an upgrade to 10.4 and updating grub I get this message. how do I address this

I had to register with a new username, because I could not remember my logon details and have since changed ISP so could not get details sent, anyway that aside to the problem.
I upgraded to 11.04 and all went well (hence posting here and not in the Upgrade section) and it is running fine, well until yesterday.
I ran the update manager as I usually do when first entering Ubuntu and it did an update but then gave me an error message about file permissions and to check my connection (which was connected OK).It has also affected the Software Installer, and now I can not install any new software.
Is this a generic problem with the latest update or is it just my Dell Inspiron 1545 please?

View 7 Replies View RelatedToday I tried to attach my digital turntable to the line-in of the computer and hoped for some sound to come. Unfortunately it didn't work. I switched the line-in feature on and put the volume on max. Still no results. I checked the same on Windows and this DOES work, so it can't be the hardware. Do I have to install some extra app in order to use the line-in in put? To complete the information: I'm using Squeeze 64-bits with Gnome. The turntable (Akai ATT05U) HAS worked before (that was when I used Ubuntu 32-bits on an Intel Celeron ). Another thing: since I tried to edit the sound settings, I get an error message at boot: "Could not update ICEautority file /var/lib/gdm3/.ICEauthority". Does this have anything to do with the audio matter?

Today I installed suse 11.1 on my computer. After some time i was able to connect to the internet and the auto update program prompted for updates. after the updates were installed more updates were prompted. but now i get an error when i try to install them. edit: the error is "PackageKit Error internal-error: Installation aborted by user " if i try it manually i get an message "access denied to ......" how can i make my system update normal?

I downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?
