when i install a new cursor it only shows when i'm on internet. but when i am on the desktop it just shows the standard mouse. i already tried restarting or tried another mouse but it's all the same
View 3 RepliesSimilar problems to mine have popped up elsewhere, but none of the fixes seem to work (or I'm just too stupid). I tried to see what the people at Canonical and elsewhere came up with for Ubuntu 10.4 and, after the live USB checked out fine, I rather foolishly installed the OS on my Acer Aspire One D250 (1GB RAM), to run alongside Windows XP.
It booted up once, I think, and then no more. I believe the problem MIGHT be the Broadcom WiFi stuff, but I'm not sure. Anyway, booting Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with a blinking cursor... which doesn't appear to go away. Recovery mode worked once or twice (had to use ACPI=OFF at least once), then no more. It leads to the same thing: that perpetually blinking cursor.
What I would like is either a fix to get Ubuntu 10.4 launched, or some way to remove the OS and restore my netbook back to what it was. Unfortunately, the MBR fixes that are posted all over cyberspace are useless, as my hidden partition doesn't contain the rtmbr.bin file it needs to work (don't ask me why--I've already posted that question at the AAO user forum). So it seems a fix to launch Ubuntu is the only solution, so that I can at least set grub to launch Windows XP rather than Ubuntu.
What does it mean if you boot from a live CD, the CD spins, a screen appears with the keyboard and human icons at the bottom, then a blank screen appears with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner - and that's it? It just stays that way.
I've tried two different discs, one 10.04 and one 10.10; and two different disc drives.
I am using a Droid X hotspot which works fine on my windows partition of the dual boot. When I switch to 10.10 it says Droid hotspot connected but I have no internet. Can someone tell me what needs to be tweaked. It feels like a silly setting somewhere. I don't want to be forced to use Windows just so I can use my hotspot.

Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.

Am running Ubuntu NBR as the sole OS on my Dell Mini 9. Switched over in March to 9.10 NBR. Everything worked fine.Upgraded to 10.04 when it was released. It's awesome EXCEPT for this busy cursor thing.As soon as I log in, all the time my cursor is the spinning wheel of busyness.... It works just as a normal cursor would - my computer also does not seem to be slower due to any operations.If I open an application, the cursor will behave as usual within the window but if I more my cursor to the title bar or switch out of the application, the "busy cursor" resumes.

The cursor moves with the mouse.At the boot menu, I can select alternatively "failsafe" and that takes me (after login) to the Linux command line and I don't know how to work that very well

Since Lucid install the cursor periodically disappears, both mouse and trackpad. Requires restart.

When I reboot, I get grub, select the top linux option and then see a small black blinking cursor for a few seconds, then nothing. The screen reports no signal.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to do a dual boot of XP and ubuntu. I have 3 hard drives and I plan to put ubuntu on one of them. I have created a DVD from the ISO for 10.10 using programs and methods recommended by ubuntu, and it burned correctly onto the DVD. When I boot with the dvd in the tray the computer says something about linux iso then the screen goes black with a Human=Keyboard symbol at the bottom for a few seconds. Then my screen goes black with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen. I have let it sit for a while and the PC shows no signs of drives working.Also if I remove it the PC automatically boots to windows.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBookPro5,2 with WinXP and Mac 10.6.7 installed. I created a new partition, and installed refit. I burned Ubuntu 11.04 32bit, rebooted, held 'c' and it started the boot process via the CD. It makes it to a brief Ubuntu image but changes the the blinking cursor and doesn't change. I see no menus and have no options except to be sad and reboot.
How should I proceed debugging this? Simply running Ubuntu via 'LiveCD' would be nice, as would being able to install Ubuntu. Should I try an alternative version of Ubuntu?
I have just installed Xubuntu 10.04, on my Mac pro. I have OS X snow leopard on one hard drive (sd1), and I put lucid on another hard drive (sd2) (both SATA). The installation went perfectly.
The issue is that I cannot boot Ubuntu, the screen briefly flashes some colors, and then displays a blinking cursor. The screen is unresponsive to the keyboard, at this point I have to restart the computer.
My assumption is that there is a problem with my NVidia card and the drivers, but I am not even sure that grub loads as I cannot see anything until the blinking cursor comes up. Is there a way that I can boot into safe mode, and then install the proper video drivers? I must use OS X for the moment.
I have installed today Ubuntu 10.4 LTS ..after installation the OS does not boot and just shows blank screen with cursor blinking ...any idea ..I have searched the forum a lot but cannot understand why this is happening ..re-installed twice ..This is AMD64 bit but I am installing the 32 bit ubuntu 10.4 LTS.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 beta 2 two days back. Upon trying to use the system, these were the problems I had:
1. Mouse is absolutely not responsive. Even the cursor is not showing.
2. When I login through keyboard options only once this message flashed "Unity not supported by your hardware switch to classic mode on your next login". It flashed once, took me to the desktop screen where the classic desktop was available and I could not access anything without keyboard shortcuts.
3. When I tried launching firefox, deluge or even tried using the terminal to connect to the net I am unable to connect.
4. My USB devices are not read.
5. I finally tried to do a clean install of 10.10 using the live cd I already have but the OS is not booting from the cd.
As a result I am stuck with a comp which has no mouse, no internet, no usb support, no cd support. Do you guys have any idea how I get it to work again?
Today I decided to play with my new 11.4 Opensuse dvd. It installed and booted without any problem, and I didn't face any problem until I rebooted the computer to test my newly installed nvidia graphics drivers. openSuse wouldn't boot. Well, the important side is: there are no kernel panics, no "hit enter to restart computer" to find the reason. Just a blinking cursor after an attempt to find the kernel. I only could get out of that by pressing the reboot button. I decided to press c and boot manually:

and the computer just froze. At this stage pressing tab for autocompletion at kernel line freezes the computer, too.

Im using 5.6 DVD install to a HW raid1 Card (2 x SSDs in raid 1, Arcea Card Natively recognized by centos anaconda).I select to wipe the entire drive and remove ALL partitions (ive also tried setting this to just remove linux partitions). The install location (raid drive) is /dev/sdh the A-G are other 1.5TB drives.I also un-check EVERY drive except the raid drive (sdh). it then asks me if it ok to wipe/reformat drive (Prompts Yes or No, i click yes)Every time i do this install i get the blinking cursor after post. Im told this means i dont have GRUB installed, i do NOT disable grub or anything related to the boot-loader in anaconda installer (all those setting are left at default). ive also tried setting this to NO boot loader, and i get the same result.
This DOES work as i have gotten it to install and run prefect for a few weeks. I think what i did then was removed ALL THE DRIVES except teh raid drive, and then did the install then. This way the install drive was /dev/sdA and all worked, even when i added the drives back online after the install, the machine ran great and booted several times this way (i had to do a os re-install or else i would have left it as is.)YES bios is 100% set to the raid card as the first device to boot from, Centos 6 installed to the same raid drive boots and works great - but i need 5.6.no google help on this one, searched hard, only one article on Ubuntu doing this all the time.also everytime im retrying to install 5.6, i go into the HW raid card's bios and delete and recreate the raid1 volume (it takes about 10 min for it to format and initialize the raid1 array
I have installed it from usb as the cd installation failed at the point where you decide which type of installation you want (lamp or samba, etc)the installation completed but when booting nothing happens, only a black screen with a blinking cursor. pressing the shift key or any other keys doesn't work.strangely when i boot from the usb flash drive again (and not from the hard drive) the server does boot and asks for the user name and password!i have chosen the guided lvm partition with 20% reserved for system files.my machine is an athlon xp 2GHz (32bit), 1GB, SATA hard drive, nvidia 6600 graphicsmy guess is that its a problem with grub and lvm.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire One AOA110 that came with Windows XP.
I created a usb flash drive install for Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition and went through the install process (wiped disk clean, not a dual boot with WINXP).
Before install, I was able to run Ubunut from the usb key with no problems.
At the end of the install, it told me I needed to restart, so I clicked the "restart" button and the removed the usb drive. Nothing happened and it never restarted and just completley hung for about 20 minutes. I manually shut down the computer by holding the power for 10 seconds and then rebooted the machine. Now all I get after the "acer bios" screen is a black screen with a blinking cursor. If I press any buttons, the computer beeps at me.
After installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS, I restarted my machine. I removed the disk, but now when it starts, it never gets to GRUB. Instead, it just takes me to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can't type in anything and holding shift doesn't take me to GRUB.

I know it is supposed to print a long list of all installed packages. I tried to re-install rpm from the synaptic, but still it shows no output.
I've been tooling around in linux on and off since I discovered KNOPPIX 3.2. No linux distro has ever been a daily driver for me, though I wish sometimes it were.I've tried many distros over the past couple weeks via virtualBox on my mac and decided to install Debian on my laptop. I've tried multiple times and it has always failed; quite disappointing.

64 bit AMD Turion II Ultra M620 2.50 GHz Dual-core
I started the install via the live ISO as the netinst & the DVD versions both failed, either by no suitable kernel or just flat out "installing base system failed". I've now found my computer to boot past the POST splash screen , and then to a black screen with a line cursor blinking with no input/output ability.To be clear, I did use uNetBootin to create the USB, and have successfully installed, and used multiple other distros (ubuntuMate, mint, peppermint, Arch, elementary) without issue, or at least nothing I couldn't fix.
How can I get past this and attempt to install Debian? I'd put my linux knowledge at a "beginner" stat, but I'm by no means daft about electronics and computers.
I finally managed to install Fedora onto this machine and get it to the login prompt. That is where I've come unstuck: I try to login, it changes the screen, gives a spinny cursor thing, then a little shake and back to the login screen.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble booting the install CD for Fedora 15? As soon as I select a boot option I get a grey screen with a blinking cursor even if I pick the option to use basic video. I have tried using the intel_iommu=off parameter which makes no difference.
I also seem to have a similar issue when trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 on this machine too. I am using a Athlon x2 5200+, 5GB Ram, ATI 3850 if that's.
