I've re-set my password in recovery mode: now how do I save my changes and exit to a normal boot up ie to my desktop? Right now my screen shows "username@Username-desktop:~$"
I've also done a sudo apt-get updates and sudo apt-get desktop for good measure. But how do I get out? If I force quit the change is not saved and I cannot log on.

Out of nowhere my computer will not boot up. I get the message like this NMI received for unknown reason 29 on CPU 0. Dazed and confused, but trying to continue Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled? NMI received for unknown reason 39 on CPU 0. Dazed and confused, but trying to continue Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled? I read something about it being the video card, so I took my old one out which it being an ati, an replaced it with an nvidia.
I have a Dell Precision T3400 workstation (Nvidia Quadro NVS 290) with the kmod Nvidia driver installed. Everything works fantastic for power saving, the screen saver comes on , then the monitor blanks after a while. The only problem is that the monitor itself (Dell E228WFP) never goes into standby. The power LED stays green instead of orange. Worked fine under FC8, only noticed it recently under FC10.
i am trying to install rhel 6 (86*64) on my windows 7 (AMD Sempron 145 processor) using DVD iso image. after selecting keyboard language and it goes to ther rest of the process for 20 seconds and then the monitor goes to power save mode. trying to input with keyboard or mouse does not seems to be helping. i have changed my windows 7 powersave options to "never".
Since Firefox is cross platform, this is equally Linux and Windows question, but presumably the Linux crowd knows better.
Whenever I go full screen with any kind of video in Firefox I get the "press ESC to exit full-screen mode" warning that plagues my screen for several seconds.
I noticed that if I have "exit" in a bash script file., e.g. script.sh,that when the word "exit" is reached, and the script file being executed is not in the PATH nvironment, i.e. ". script.sh", the whole konsole shell profile is exited! What gives here? Is there another command compatible to "exit" to prevent this, or will I just have the leave the "." part in the PATH enviroment, which is, to my understanding, is not recommended? I desire for a "goto" function in bash script files
I installed fedora 13 in its LXDE flavor in my laptop. I noticed when it goes to save energy mode, the TFT retro-illumination is not turned off. The display just stays black with light. How to make the display to turn off when the system enters in save energy mode?
In linux, creating thread is same as process (clone()), except the virtual address space gets shared with the parent. If a running main process(thread) creates new thread, and if main thread exits, why should the new thread too exit? both are different entities, The same doesn't happen if the child thread exits, the parent thread would be alive.
Does anyone know how to start up Krusader in root mode when using Gnome? If I run it from the "Krusader Root Mode" icon, it does not ask for the root password and opens up in standard mode. I do not want to run my gnome session in root mode, since firefox will not run in root mode.
Like the title says, I'm unable to change root's password.
I boot into singleuser mode, run passwd, get the
Code:
Boot into multiuser mode and I'm still unable to login.
Two questions: 1) Anyone have a 'default' /etc/pam.d/system-auth that I can replace with the system-auth that was obliterated by the pam_passwdqc update?
Error message in /var/log/messages login(pam_unix)[26769]:session opened for user root by LOGIN(uid=0) login[26769]: Module is unknown init: open(/dev/pts/0): No such file or directory
I have created a new user also but I couldn't login to the system. But I could login to the system as root and also with same new username password through putty from another machine.
I just tried ubuntu 9.10 in recovery mode i came to know that i can change root passwd without knowing the password then i can change password of every user by logging in as root
In krusader (root mode), I want to edit a plain text file that can only be edited as su. When clicking on the file opened kwrite before, now I get this krusader error message: "KDEInit couldn't launch 'usr/bin/kwrite' OK"
Why is this happening? What's wrong? I've found that this problem begins on the second try to open the file-- for the first time clicking on it, kwrite opens it for editing but not on tries following the first one made in the same computer session. Rebooting fixes the problem but only for the first new opening of the file.
I have a Dell Optiplex 760 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
running:
I tried to upgrade to FC11 via download and DVD and in both cases the install hangs on bootstrap right after remounting the root filesystem in read/write mode.
Since it hangs in this manner, I have not been able to gather any logs...
When I start my ubuntu linux system it automatically logs into a user (not root) in graphical mode and it does not asking for any password. when I try to go to the command prompt the password is required. How do I give password for my user. The provider installed the system and not me..
I've been installing proftpd on a server running fedora 8. It is setup in standalone server type, and I checked that the process is running and listening to port 21. When I try to login using a ftp client in Normal mode with root user & password , I receive first a 220, then a 530 login incorrect error. Can you help me?
I've been pasting my proftpd.conf configuration file below
Can someone assist me with recovering/resetting the password for Root via Single User Mode in CentOS v5? I've modified the kernel line using Single, S, and 1 but it appears that these commands are being totally ignored as the server continues with the boot process and displays the GUI logon screen. The server in question is a VM box running on ESX v3.5 U4. The person that created this VM is no longer employed here and I've exhausted everything I know regarding Single User Mode.
What are the differences between "su -" in a GUI terminal and directly logging in as root in a text mode terminal (tty1-tty6)? Any environment, path or other functionality differences?
I followed instructions to enter single user mode by adding single at the end of kernel line but after that it doesn't ask for root password but brings up the sh# prompt. Isn't that supposed to be insecure? I understand for this the grub password can be applied but even after adding "single" it should ask for root password..or it should not..??
When I go to single user mode for resetting root password, It ask root pawssword for login. The message displayed on prompt is "Give root password for login. On the boot prompt, I select kernel and press 'e' and after one space type 1 for single User mode and then press 'b' for booting. It shows message entering in single user mode but ask root password.
