i have done something while changing permission in vi editor. now when i open any file, i am not able to save and exit from it. when i type esc+shift:wq after opening a file. it says cant open file in write mode.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just switched from Windows to Linux. I've been using EditPlus for many years mainly because of it's ability to save locally, and then send the file via FTP, with easy keyboard shortcuts (ctrl-s to save, ctrl-alt-s to ftp).
I also need syntax highlighting and basic code editing features. Is there anything for Linux that can do this? I don't want to run EditPlus via Wine
I need to save locally and remotely simultaneously, or at least with a few keystrokes. I already know of plenty of ways to edit remote files.
I've re-set my password in recovery mode: now how do I save my changes and exit to a normal boot up ie to my desktop? Right now my screen shows "username@Username-desktop:~$"
I've also done a sudo apt-get updates and sudo apt-get desktop for good measure. But how do I get out? If I force quit the change is not saved and I cannot log on.
im following a tutorial to setup a dns server, after editing vi etc/sysconfig/syslog, i cant seem to save me changes or exit the screen to get back to a command prompt. have tried to google the answer to no avail, any ideas? also im using putty to ssh, is the answer the same as using the terminal directly?

I have Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with Windows7.My ext3 /home is mounted as F: in windows.I share a firefox profile between them so that when i am in Windows my firefox uses the same profile as it does when in Ubuntu.It all worked great until recently. I am unable to save files by right clicking and save as. In the config i am unable to set a directory to save to. It neer asks me where to save to. Just nothing happens. some off my book marks are all messed up as well, my rss feeds have the same post on some random website every time i log on and i have to manually refresh to get the correct feeds back. I am unable to delete the random bookmark.

What gives here? Is there another command compatible to "exit" to prevent this, or will I just have the leave the "." part in the PATH enviroment, which is, to my understanding, is not recommended? View 3 Replies View RelatedFew days back i installed ubuntu 10.10 on my system. Previously i worked on ubuntu 10.04 and used vim too, everything was fine. Now I formatted and upgraded to 10.10, when I use vim I find some of the commands missing for example :AS command used to open corresponding .c and .h files. On 10.04 it worked fine, but in 10.10 its giving error "E492: Not an editor command: AS". How to fix the issue? any missing packages i need to install?

I don't really care if it is GUI or console based, but it has to work properly, the curses-based ones that I've tried somehow manage to corrupt its own display by merely scrolling through the file being edited.
So, my question is, what is a good hex editor for GNU/Linux? If possible I'd gladly like to know both the name of a console based one and another GUI-based one.
On windows I really only used Notepad++ as my text editor, it had two features that I loved.What I need to accomplish is what I would do with Notepad++ column editor.I could have like 100 lines, and place the cursor at a column, and goto edit>column editor, and I could insert an incrementing number. (I could also pad the incrementing number with 0s, this was GREAT for making batch files among other things.)So each line at that column had a number higher than the previous line.The other feature that I used sometimes was a search/replace with regex patterns.Does anyone know of an editor that has those features for linux? I am mostly after the column editor insert feature but if you know of one with both features that would rock.

I have installed ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and MATLAB 7.3 _x86-64.When I run matlab launching script I get this error message and the program freezes:

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have 2 internal drives. One is for the OS and one is for the Data. I tried to get the Data drive to mount automatically at login using some crap I found on a linux blog. Safe to say it didn't work and now I can't mount it with the OS on the OS Drive.
It mounts from a live CD and all the data is perfectly safe. When I try to mount the drive I get this error message: "Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/data" What have I done wrong and how can I make it mount again? Preferably this time at login.
I'm running Rythmbox 0.13.1 on Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition.
My problem is that edits I make to tags sometimes don't save in Rythmbox. After I make the edit and click save it appears to have changed. (IE, the genre will change or the comment section will be different.) But if I reboot Rythmbox it has reverted to its previous state.
Not sure what's going on. Is this something I should fix or should I file a bug report and wait for the next version of Rythmbox?

The server was commissioned by someone else and I remotely installed GNOME group, and vncserver as per the official CentOS instructions here.
Initially I tried using a normal (ie non root) user's credential for my VNC session. However, instead of asking me for my root password when I tried to open system-config-bind, it just doesn't load up. I ended up allowing the user "root" to connect to the server remotely via VNC, and was able to get system-config-bind to start.

I use flock 2.5.2 as my browser, and have recently been unable to save any bookmarks, and use the back and forward buttons (as there is no history being stored) . I can't drag links to the bookmark toolbar either.I am using Ultimate Edition 2.3 - which is essentially Ubuntu 9.04 underneath all the fancy bits lol.I downloaded flock as a debian package via the getdeb website.Will happily post any logs that are needed to help - I'm just clueless as to what would be a good place to start!Have tried removing flock, and re-installing, and the problem remains..

My problem is that if I try to save some webpage in postscript or pdf format, I go to file>print>print-to-file option and choose output file as ps or pdf format. Now if I click to print, I do get the corresponding page saved in ps/pdf format but only the first page is printed(i.e., saved in ps/pdf format) this way, leaving major portion(may be eight pages for example) of the corresponding webpage unsaved. (the option: range of printing: all pages is chosen by default.) Why is this happening and what should I do to print the entire page? I get the prompt to authenticate with a user, and of course I get user root and user robert, but when I select user root, it automatically closes with error: Unable to authenticate/execute the action: (code 4) and then of course I get the above error in /var/log/messages. I know this issue is somehow related to polit setup and/or KDE, but can't figure out what. Please if someone has some ideas, let me know

I'm working on a Soekris net4801 that is running an unknown distro of Linux. The kernel is 2.4.29, and iptables is v1.3.4.
I can't work out how to save the iptables. I searched the whole system for files/folders containing the name "iptables" and got 3 results:
/user/local/lib/iptables
/sbin/iptables
/lib/iptables
I've tried iptables save, iptables-save and iptables save active.
"iptables save" and "iptables save active" give me an invalid argument error. "iptables-save" isn't a valid command. "iptables --help" gives me a list of valid switches, none of which have to do with saving.

I can successfully connect to a remote Windows Computer using Terminal Server Client but I cannot save the profile (Fedora 12).This means I have to enter the details every time I wish to connect. View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Jaunty in my departmental machine which is having 70 GB harddisk and 512 MB RAM. Before installing I partitioned the Hard disk by using Gparted of Live CD into Four compartments namely
1. Primary partition of 30 GB of file type ext3
2. Extended partition of 39 GB which I divided again into two logical Partition of 20 GB and 19 GB. Labelled it as D and E
3. 1 GB of swap partition
I installed the Jaunty in primary partition, gave the mount point as /The problem is I am not able to copy or save file in the extended partition namely D and E
I have made some plots in gnuplot that I wanted to include in a document. I have tried both OpenOffice and Kile.
In openoffice the plots are shown when they are imported, but when I save the document and open it up again the plots are gone (unable to read).
In Kile I can't even import them, It cant find the file in the folder. I tried changing the formats from jpg to png - didn't work. Tried just taking a snapshot of the original plot and saving it, didn't work either (but have used the same method earlier today without problems for a different image).
When i move the cursor across the file, it fades away as if it's not registered correctly. Does anybody have a solution for this?
