Fedora Networking :: Connect Brother Printer To LAN Via Wireless
May 19, 2009
I need to direction here: my laptop (F10 gnome) is cat5 dhcp connected to a dlink 524 router with IP 192.168.150.1. This in turn is connected to an arris modem with ip 216... Local IP is 192.168.100.1 (default). It works, connects to internet, supplies dhcp address to dlink. All this is upstairs in my ham room upstairs. My wifes laptop downstairs usually connects wirelessly to the dlink, and hence to the arris. Also works to the internet. There is a linksys (ddwrt software) running as a wireless repeater also located downstair, with box ip 192.168.1.1.
It is "joined" to the dlink router via wireless, hence it function, wireless repeater. It works, I have used it like this many time. However, I cannot seem to get a connection to the Brother printer (which has a print server function). It is connected to the linksys repeater via a lan cable. Gets an ip via dhcp. I think it should work, since my wife can connect to the linksys repeater, either wireless or wired, and surf the internet thru the dlink router via the repeater-dlink wireless repeater link. I must be missing something obscure (to me, at least).
I have a Brother DCP585CW and have installed the drivers from Brother and it worked fine on Ubuntu 9.10 on both my desktop and laptop. I have installed 10.04 on both and now the problem. It works fine on the desktop but I get a problem on the laptop. It is a wireless printer and I can print to it but only after I do 2 things each time I reboot the laptop. I have to configure it through cups (http://localhost:631) because it keeps getting set to being connected via USB and letter rather than A4 paper on each boot but the correct setting is:
As I have recently figured out, it is very hard to set-up a Brother MFC-J415w wireless printer on a 64 bit machine, so to save you from spending hours searching the Internet and trying different drivers, I will tell you how to set one up.
Step one: Download the 32-bit driver from this link: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...html#MFC-J415W. When prompted, save the file.
Step two: Open the terminal and type in the following commands:
Code:
mkdir /usr/lib/cups
Code:
mkdir /usr/lib/cups/filter
Code:
mkdir /usr/share/cups/model
Depending on what you've tried before, some of these directories may already exist. Step three: Type the following commands:
I have Fedora 11 and am trying to install Brother HL-2170W Wireless laser printer. I installed it and used CPUS but cannot print. SELinux is enabled. On Brothers site there is an FAQ about SELinux and CUPS. [URL] I followed these instructions but still cannot print. Jobs get queued. Under Printer properties -> Policies, there is an Enabled checked. For some reason when I check this Enabled box and click Apply, the changes do not take effect. Then Enabled checkbox gets uncheck again.
I cannot even print a test page as its status shows Pending.
How can I access this printer so that I can print my documents?? I am new to Fedora and I have no knowledge of CUPS but I want to be able to acces my wireless printer. When I go to printer section in preferences, I am not able to find my wireless printer.
After a fresh installation of F15, my Brother HL-2030 printer does not work anymore (means it worked fine with previous Fedora versions). As usual, I downloaded the proprietary drivers from the Brother home-page [1] and installed them. Then, I configured the driver in my browser ('localhost:631'). The printer was correctly recognised (connection via USB). Printing the test page worked fine, but now, as usual user and as root, too, I am not able to print for example with Abiword, Gedit, Sylpheed and other applications.
Strangely, using Firefox, I am able to print for example the Fedora forum or Distrowatch homepage, or some on-line newspaper articles, but I am not able to print a local HTML page (for example [2]). Furthermore, when trying to print a document in Abiword or Sylpheed, the printer warms up, but it does not print. I've attached '/var/log/cups/error_log' (LogLevel debug). (The 'HL2030' diver was added automatically, and I removed it because it did not find any PPD file. The correct printer is called 'brother_hl-2030'.)
I've recently installed F15 LXDE RC from the livecd and connected my USB Brother All-In-One MFC-5440cn printer. After following the Brother installation page, the Cups & LPR drivers are installed but when I'm in the cups page (http://localhost:631/admin), the printer will not print a test page or print from any application. The LCD panel on the printer does show 'receiving data' but nothing comes out. The last version of Fedora I had running was F13 and the same printer worked fine.
Are there any other printer drivers I need to install besides the Brothers? The printer does show up in the Print Manager but nothing prints. I did have this same type of issue with Mageia Beta 1 and ended up installing a2ps, which wasn't included in the original print drivers, and it is now printing. So I had to install a2ps with F15 but still no print output. Something must have changed with the recent distros causing this. After looking at the output of dmesg I see this:
Code: WARNING! power/level is deprecated; use power/control instead [14.867397] udev-configure-printer[587]: add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.2/usb1/1-3/1-3.2/1-3.2:1.0 [14.867991] udev-configure-printer[587]: parent devpath is /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.2/usb1/1-3/1-3.2 [14.869115] udev-configure-printer[587]: Device vendor/product is 04F9:016D [14.880470] udev-configure-printer[587]: MFG:Brother MDL:MFC-5440CN SERN:- serial:BROM5F412304 [14.880520] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp [15.902920] udev-configure-printer[587]: failed to connect to CUPS server; giving up .....
Any idea why it's failing to connect to Cups or any idea how to find out? Is it possible to have too many USB devices connected? I'm using a 4 port usb hub in use and also using a usb mouse/keyboard connected.
I have just got my network to work on Fedora, and now I have run into an new problem... I can't access any shared files or printers. The computer that has the printer and the files I want to access runs windows XP Home edition, and when I boot into XP on my machine, I can access the files and printer. Can this be fixed, or is Fedora incompatable with Windows XP in this case?
I am having a little trouble connecting to my wireless network. Running Fedora 10 32 bit.I'm trying to connect to a hidden wireless network. I updated the firmware for my driver but apparantly the driver is still not working. Broadcom has a driver from their website for Linux 32 bit systems. Should I attempt to install it? I read a post where the driver is built into the system kernel. If so I would need to blacklist the one of the drivers. Correct?

I have the following machine : laptop : Dell Inspiron E1505 Wireless : Intel Pro Wireless 3945 (ipw3945-1.2.2 + ipw3945d-1.7.22 + ipw3945-ucode-1.14.2 / eth1) Printer : HP C4580 Photosmart wireless (hplip-3.9.8) Ethernet : Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0100Base-TX (b44.ko / eth0) External Modem : Siemens CL-110 ADSL OS : Fedora 6+11 (currently on fc6)
The external modem is connected via the laptop ethernet and provides the internet connection. The printer is connected via wireless adhoc to the laptop's IPW3945 wireless card. I use firestarter as firewall. When firestarter is disabled everything works fine. If enabled it blocks my printer. I have tried to open every possible port via firestarter (according to several other threads) with no luck. My printer is set (under system-config-printer) as :
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04. I've looked in the fourms, on Google, and the Ubuntu site itself. I'm completely blind when it comes to finding things to fix my problems. I cant seem to connect my wireless printer to my laptop. It is an HP Photosmart C6380 All-in-one Printer-Scanner-Copier. I have CUPS and Samba installed but have no idea how to get them to work.
I have been fiddling around with getting my printer (HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-one Printer - e709n) connected to laptop (Toshiba Satellite L455D) for nearly a month. I am running Ubuntu 10.04. I have never been able to successfully connect it using the ad hoc but the printer always worked using a USB connection. It is a shame because this may be the only thing preventing me from going all Linux.
I am running ubuntu 9.04 and am having trouble printing. My Brother DCP 330c printer is detected however I have to manually chose a printer driver all of which do not work with the printer. I have tried downloading a printer driver from the brother website and tried to install it.
This site has drivers for my new Brother HL-3040CN laser printer ... but it says its the wrong architecture when I try to open the first one with GDebi Package Installer. I'm kind of stuck now ...should I try just plugging the printer into the computer with the network cable and seeing if Ubuntu will automatically take care of drivers? For reference I saw this topic when I googled the issue [URL] This site says 64 bit drivers are available for Ubuntu 9.10, only 32 bit drivers are available for Ubuntu 10.04. I am running 10.04 (64bit) ... should I return the printer?
I had it printing until the last cups upgrade. Brother support thinks it is something to do with the upgrade. We did a reinstall of the printer driver. The printer works on Virtual Box and the scanner works on Ubuntu, but not the printer. What do I need to have the printer work under 11.04?
About a week ago I installed my first Linux (Ubuntu 10.04). Since then I've been trying to get my printer to work by following some of the instructions on the web.Unfortunately,as a newbie, I can't seem to get it right... The printer is - Brother DCP-135C.
I've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?
I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid RC a couple of days ago and have been trying to work through a few problems since. One of these problems is printing with my Brother DCP506CN printer which was working in Karmic. However, I just can't seem to get it going in Lucid. I have followed the Brother linux install procedure, which worked for the the last few Ubuntu releases, but not for this one it seems.
I have read the threads and have downloaded the 4 drivers/files from the brothers site and installed them.. but still can not get my USB cabled printer to work what am I missing I am running Ubuntu 10.04 sounds like brother is not the printer to have in case their is no fix what brands of printers are best for compatibility?
Anybody else using this printer? I have tried the driver direct from Brother, requires cups and the driver. Both installed, both fail. I read on another forum to try a Brother HCL type and it works, but why?
I have a Brother MFC-240C inkjet printer & scanner. On installation of Maverick Meerkat v. 10.10, my scanner function failed. I added the same line into the file as for Lucid Lynx v. 10.04 and the scanner has scanned perfectly. The lines Brother gives are for the following file: Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04
1. Open "/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules" file. 2. Add the following two lines to the end of the device list. (Before the line "# The following rule will disable ..."):
I plan on changing brands in printer from HP to Brother in the near future. Will I need to completely remove HPLIP before installing Brother printer software pkg on Ubuntu 10.04?
I am unable to print on my Brother mcf 440cn printer. Every thing was working ok, today I finished some work in Open Office and could not print the saved file. I get an error unable to print msg. my printer is no longer recognized on the system. I reinstalled the driver no luck. I tested the printer with Windooze and every thing works fine
I'm trying to download this driver with my UBUNTU 11.04 but theres so many steps I'm not sure I'm doing it right. I downloaded SUSE but I dont know how to get it to run. I'm also in the process of downloading Cups But I don't know what to do with that either.
I cannot modify my printer in Cups. In the past when I wanted to add a printer, or modify an installed printer, I clicked on the Admin tab, and I get a prompt to enter a password. I never get the prompt to enter user - root and the root password. So I can not add a printer, or modify one that is installed. My Brother HL-2040 is still working, I can print jobs O.K. it will not print test page. Why do I care? I want to have a better understanding of the location on the lpr and cupswrapper drivers on this system.
I have installed Slackware 13.1 on a second drive, and am trying to convert to that system. In 13.1 cups asks me for Admin user and password, I can enter root + password, and add a printer, and Mandy used to. However, in 13.1 after converting the .rpm files to .tgz files and installing them with pkgtool, I can not 'see' the lpr or cupswrapper driver in 13.1. I wanted to see what it looked like in Mandriva, however I can't and don't know why.
I cannot find a driver for the Brother MFC-490CW printer anywhere. I tried using the CD that came with the printer itself but that doesnt have any PPD files on there... Apparently they deemed it unthinkable that a Linux user might want to use their equipment.
I have a Brother MFC3360C printer that I would like to use. Has anyone had any success getting this printer working.? I've had it working on Fedora and Mandriva in the past but haven't been able to get it going on slackware. Printer setup recognizes it correctly but It's not in the list of available drivers for it and Brother only has 32 bit drivers for Deb and .rpm on their website, no 64bit.
It has worked in several releases 7.10 8.04 8.10 9.04 but stopped working in 9.04. I have tried everything (to long to list) need some bullet proof help!
