Ubuntu :: "/host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk Not Exist. Dropping To Shell."?

/host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk not exist. Dropping to shell.i install ubuntu as a dual boot with xp.this msg occur a few times after i select ubuntu to boot up from...i reboot my pc a few time and even did a "update grub" finally get the ubuntu to start...but same problem occur again just now...
Just tried installing Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB device on my Windows 7 machine but something goes wrong. Far into the installation the computer restarts, asks me which operating system I want to start (it had already done this once before) and I choose Ubuntu. Then I get three alternatives:
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery mode) Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sdb1)
I pick the top choice, and get the following message: ALERT! /host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk does not exist. Dropping to a shell.
If I start recovery-mode i get the same message. There's some text above the message that reads "new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address"... Could there be a problem with the usb-drive? If I remove the USB drive I get the message: Gave up waiting for root device.
I have search and there is similar topic but for 9.10 and the problem contains "UUID" [URL]I was wondering if the fix listed there will help my problem.
I have a 64 bit ubuntu 9.10 / 64 bit windows 7 dual boot setup, each installed on different drives.Everything worked fine for weeks, but after booting into windows for maybe the third time, when I tried to boot back into ubuntu, the splash screen and xwindows failed to start, dropping me to a terminal to log in.After rebooting a few more times to see if i could wish the problem away, some kind of fix/recovery screen came up and gave me the chance to try to update/repair installed packages, which I took. Now, when I boot, I get:
ata_id[428]:HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/.tmp-block-8:80' ata_id[427]:HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/.tmp-block-8:64' usplash: Settomg ,pde 1152x864 failed
I installed ubuntu netbook 10.10 on my acer aspire one with the "install inside windows" option. The first time it booted into ubuntu properly and completed the installation, then it automatically restarted and now when I try to boot ubuntu, I get the following error message:
Code:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat/proc/cmdline) - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) - Missing modules(cat/proc/modules; ls/dev) Alert! /dev/sbd2 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
my laptop doesnt have any cdrom drive and all usbs are broken so wubi is my only option. oh and i use win 7 starter. i tried to install netbook edition to my laptop but i always get error. i can install with only "acpi workarounds". i dont even understand what it is the error and why i'm getting this error.
error is

I was upgrading online through my android phone's easytether app. My phone rang, and I was bounced offline. When I came back the upgrade did not resume, and when I tried to start over, dpkg and whatever was busy so I closed all my windows and tried to reboot. This is where I ended up: Here is a screenshot:
I've downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and I have installed it within ms windows. My first problem was when I went to boot Ubuntu and the graphics weren't right so I rebooted it with a different graphic configuration and it installed successfully. When I went to boot Ubuntu a second time to actually use it I got the following error: ALERT! /host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-1ubuntu6) built-in shell (ash)
I've had installed my new Ubuntu onto my 500 GB Seagate. Before I done any of that, my old Ubuntu I installed was installed into my laptop hard drive. It stopped working cause it couldn'tfind /ubuntu/disks/root.disk something like that.I'm right now using Ubuntu, and I was wondering if anyone knew how to mount my sdb5...
Code: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 60242 483890176 83 Linux
I no longer have access to my root desktop. On a session I attempted to change the root username but i apparently assigned it a wrong directory that does not exist. When I rebooted with my new root username, i was instead recognised as a simple user (no root privileges). I tried the console to change to "old" root but root password is not accepted and there is no way to access to sudoer files. it seems that inserting a new username requires root privileges and i am back to square one. Simply logging with old root username and password after restart gives me a blank screen with nothing on it and cannot even reboot.
First off I just want to inform you that I've done a lot of research, used countless of hours on Google trying to figure out how to solve this problem I'm having. I'm installing Ubuntu 10.10 64bit with Wubi on the same partition I have Windows 7. And the error I get is the: "Alert! /dev/sdb1 does not exist."
I'm able to get into Ubuntu after waiting a couple of minutes and writing "exit" in the "initramfs".
This is what I've tried:
- Installing without Wubi, still the same problem - Adding pci=nocrs - Adding rootdelay=90 in grub.cfg - Changing the root location to "/dev/sda1" - Tried using the uuid
[Code]...
"fdisk -l" shows sda1 and sdb1-3. In the boot selection screen Windows seems to be on the "sdb1" as it says "Windows 7 /dev/sdb1", and I thought as I installed Ubuntu through Wubi on the same exact partition that would be the correct root path, but obviously no. Does anyone have any idea what might cause this problem I'm having? Seems like a lot of people got this out there, and this is making me mad!
I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?
when i add a harddisk to the lenny installation, i cant reboot sucessfully. The disks are all sata, mounted as JBDO, no raid what so ever. They can be used in windows xp x64 (they are ntfs formated)HW setup:
As soon as i'm starting to copy a large file enough file (>700Mb) to my ubuntu box (connected to an Asus router via wifi) from a Windows 7 client (connected to router via ethernet cable) i get a dramatic drop in speed. upload starts at 1,0Mb/sec with a ping to ubuntu box at <1ms, and in 2 minutes it drops to 200kb/sec with a ping of over 1000ms! The ping increases with every second in a linear progression.
To exlude router as a possible problem copying to a windows 7 notebook connected to router via wifi results in an average of 2,7Mb/sec with an average ping of 150ms.

long story, I upgraded my system from maverick to natty, didn't like it so restored my system with a backup that I had done recently. after it rebooted I used gparted live CD to expand my partition, moving swap to the end of the HD, then when I rebooted grub didn't work so I booted with ubuntu live cd and reinstalled grub. then I booted normally but nautilus didn't work and had lots of problems. So I installed ubuntu again with ubuntu live cd, formating the partition and expanding it, no problems at all. But, I wanted my files back, so restored the system again, now the message that I get isQuote:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: -Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) -Check rootdelay= (did the system wait for the right device?)
I have two machines running SQUEEZE, both installed and configured within the same week (not simultaneously). Both get the users info from a NIS server. In one of the machines (named "corona"), users cannot login, neither locally nor by ssh, in the other one ("xxlager") there is no problem. Both mount the users home directories by NFS. I have not found much useful info in the web. /etc/passwd, /etc/group/, /etc/shadow, are equally configured. The only difference I have found is when I use getent. Using "getent passwd isaenz" on xxlager yields:
isaenz:x:1001:1001:User Name,,,:/home/isaenz:/bin/tcsh but on corona the result is isaenz:x:1001:1001:User Name,,,:/home/isaenz: so the shell info is empty. Checking /var/log/auth.log I see a message saying: "User isaenz not allowed because shell does not exist"
But "ypmatch isaenz passwd" returns complete information for isaenz, both on xxlager and corona.
I'm using XFCE and it doesn't by default lock the screen before hibernating. I see this as a bit of a security risk, and as I can't hibernate while the screen is locked, I'm a bit lost as to how to achieve this.
I've begun editing /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh, here's what I have so far code...
If I run with sudo, the system hibernates, but gnome-screensaver will not fire. I can verify this by trying "sudo gnome-screensaver-command --lock". The screen goes black, but is not locked. The screen locks properly without sudo.
So the only solution I can see is to edit /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh in such a way that gnome-screensaver-command runs under the current user, and pm-hibernate is called as root.
Also, when I click the HIBERNATE button in XFCE, how does it call pm-hibernate under root without prompting me for a password? I normally wouldn't be interested in such things, but as it seems relevant to my problem I'm a little more eager to learn
Fresh install of 9.10. Update all. The update froze at the very end: configuring grub-pc. I let it run like that all night before settling for a reboot while the update manager was still running. (The update also raised the kernel version.) After reboot, I tried the newer kernel [2.6.31-17-generic] at the grub menu and got this error:
Quote:
udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured. udevadm settle is not permitted while udev is unconfigured. svgalib: Cannot open /dev/mem.[code].....
And, cat /proc/modules gives me a long list of modules (too much to retype for now).So my hard drive is there. maybe some errors on the / home partition [sda6] and I can get to the root directory.
User root does exist. Sendmail doesn't deliver email to local user. This is standard instalation from apt-get install. Everything worked ok since year. Everything worked ok until recently. The server worked just over a year.
Basically, today I installed Ubuntu on my Toshiba NB200 to dual boot with XP. The installation went okay (I think) but after, when I rebooted, and selected Ubuntu from the possible selections, I got this message:Quote:Gave up waiting for root device.Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) -check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) -check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
From what I can figure out, grub can not figure out which disk has my root file system. I checked the partition labels and they match the UUID that are in my fstab.
Plan to use GRUB for multiple booting to select the OS but only with luck have I got it partially to work. Windows 98 and Puppy 431 O.K on first HDD but Puppy 421 on second HDD /dev/sdb1 stops at error 21.
Currently I'm running 3 operating systems on my machine; Windows XP, Windows 7 and Fedora 14. I've installed them in the following order: XP -> Win7 -> Fedora14, with the idea that this would work fine regarding operating system selection at boot time.
But unfortunately, I just installed Fedora, and now I'm unable to boot Windows 7/XP. When I select the "Other" option in the Grub menu, I get the following error: Code: Error 21: selected disk does not exist To provide as much info as possible, here is a boot info script log:
I like the xfce desktop environment over the gnome one. So when i chose an emergency plan B in case something happens to windows AND/OR arch, i always try Xubuntu. I have made multiple live disks from multiple computers, and none of the live disks function properly. One went haywire when i tried to update the system(can't remember exactly what went wrong), one would not even actually boot into the live disk, one would not install, and so forth and so on. At first i just though it was something wrong with the iso since the download had been paused and resumed multiple times, but right before i chose arch linux a friend tried using his xubuntu disk and it failed to work either, and i recently tried using another computer and had another failed result.
I am using redhat 3.0 i want to configure arp-acl mac based blocking to windows clints i have done bellow configuration but finally squd starting error is showing

I am trying to give another user the ability to mount any hard disk by using either the Places menu or the Palimpsest disk utility. Currently whenever you try to do either of these, it immediately asks for root password, even though the logged in user has sudo priveliges to mount disks.
I have modified the sudoers file and given them access to STORAGE and other needed commands. The account CAN mount using the mount command in terminal, but I want to allow them GUI use. From my reseach it looks like Fedora is using DeviceKit but I'm not too familiar with how it works. What do I need to allow non-root users to mount disks in the GUI?
Currently I'm running 3 operating systems on my machine (in order of installation); Windows XP, Windows 7 and Fedora 14. Unfortunately, after I installed Fedora I'm no longer able to boot Windows 7/XP. When I select the "Other" option in the Grub menu, I get the following error:
