Ubuntu :: Alert /dev/sdh1 Does Not Exist. Dropping To A Shell?

Jun 17, 2010

I have a 64 bit ubuntu 9.10 / 64 bit windows 7 dual boot setup, each installed on different drives.Everything worked fine for weeks, but after booting into windows for maybe the third time, when I tried to boot back into ubuntu, the splash screen and xwindows failed to start, dropping me to a terminal to log in.After rebooting a few more times to see if i could wish the problem away, some kind of fix/recovery screen came up and gave me the chance to try to update/repair installed packages, which I took. Now, when I boot, I get:

ata_id[428]:HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/.tmp-block-8:80'
ata_id[427]:HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/.tmp-block-8:64'

Ubuntu Installation :: Root Disk Does Not Exist - Dropping To Shell

Oct 13, 2010

Just tried installing Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB device on my Windows 7 machine but something goes wrong. Far into the installation the computer restarts, asks me which operating system I want to start (it had already done this once before) and I choose Ubuntu. Then I get three alternatives:

Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery mode)
Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sdb1)

I pick the top choice, and get the following message:
ALERT! /host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk does not exist. Dropping to a shell.

If I start recovery-mode i get the same message. There's some text above the message that reads "new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address"... Could there be a problem with the usb-drive? If I remove the USB drive I get the message: Gave up waiting for root device.

Ubuntu :: Alert! /dev/sda/uuid Does Not Exist On 9.10

Apr 27, 2010

I would get the message that the uuid file does not exist. I've been online looking for fixes since yesterday morning and nothing has helped at all. I've read online that I should run fdisk -l to obtain info to share with others, but that command doesn't work in any command prompt I open. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest patches and I'm sure you guys know that it runs Grub2 loader...if that helps at all.

Ubuntu :: Alert /dev/disk/by-uu... Doesn't Exist?

Apr 30, 2011

long story, I upgraded my system from maverick to natty, didn't like it so restored my system with a backup that I had done recently. after it rebooted I used gparted live CD to expand my partition, moving swap to the end of the HD, then when I rebooted grub didn't work so I booted with ubuntu live cd and reinstalled grub. then I booted normally but nautilus didn't work and had lots of problems. So I installed ubuntu again with ubuntu live cd, formating the partition and expanding it, no problems at all. But, I wanted my files back, so restored the system again, now the message that I get isQuote:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (did the system wait for the right device?)

Ubuntu :: Dropping To Shell On Every Boot - Fresh Install 10.10?

Mar 9, 2011

First off I just want to inform you that I've done a lot of research, used countless of hours on Google trying to figure out how to solve this problem I'm having. I'm installing Ubuntu 10.10 64bit with Wubi on the same partition I have Windows 7. And the error I get is the: "Alert! /dev/sdb1 does not exist."

I'm able to get into Ubuntu after waiting a couple of minutes and writing "exit" in the "initramfs".

This is what I've tried:

- Installing without Wubi, still the same problem
- Adding pci=nocrs
- Adding rootdelay=90 in grub.cfg
- Changing the root location to "/dev/sda1"
- Tried using the uuid

[Code]...

"fdisk -l" shows sda1 and sdb1-3. In the boot selection screen Windows seems to be on the "sdb1" as it says "Windows 7 /dev/sdb1", and I thought as I installed Ubuntu through Wubi on the same exact partition that would be the correct root path, but obviously no. Does anyone have any idea what might cause this problem I'm having? Seems like a lot of people got this out there, and this is making me mad!

Debian Configuration :: NIS User Not Allowed Because Shell Does Not Exist

May 6, 2011

I have two machines running SQUEEZE, both installed and configured within the same week (not simultaneously). Both get the users info from a NIS server. In one of the machines (named "corona"), users cannot login, neither locally nor by ssh, in the other one ("xxlager") there is no problem. Both mount the users home directories by NFS. I have not found much useful info in the web. /etc/passwd, /etc/group/, /etc/shadow, are equally configured. The only difference I have found is when I use getent. Using "getent passwd isaenz" on xxlager yields:

isaenz:x:1001:1001:User Name,,,:/home/isaenz:/bin/tcsh
but on corona the result is
isaenz:x:1001:1001:User Name,,,:/home/isaenz:
so the shell info is empty.
Checking /var/log/auth.log I see a message saying:
"User isaenz not allowed because shell does not exist"

But "ypmatch isaenz passwd" returns complete information for isaenz, both on xxlager and corona.

Ubuntu Networking :: WiFi Dropping And Dropping Speed

Feb 25, 2010

As soon as i'm starting to copy a large file enough file (>700Mb) to my ubuntu box (connected to an Asus router via wifi) from a Windows 7 client (connected to router via ethernet cable) i get a dramatic drop in speed. upload starts at 1,0Mb/sec with a ping to ubuntu box at <1ms, and in 2 minutes it drops to 200kb/sec with a ping of over 1000ms! The ping increases with every second in a linear progression.

To exlude router as a possible problem copying to a windows 7 notebook connected to router via wifi results in an average of 2,7Mb/sec with an average ping of 150ms.

I can't accept that. If it wasn't possible why is the option there to select your own wav file?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Server - Alert Message After Reboot

Jan 5, 2010

At first I tried the using the CDROM to install the server but around 8% through it could not talk to the CDROM anymore. I did attempt this a few times including re-seat the CDROM and it stopped at the same point every time. I then used the Mini install and that worked. However, after I rebooted I received the this error.

Gave up waiting for root Common problems:
Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
Check rootdelay
Check root

ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/bfaafj88-83ce-4dd2-8c6f-26o9a869eaea does not exists Dropping into shell:
(initranfs)

I then reboot from this point by issuing the reboot command and can then go into the rescue login with networking. I did select reconfigure GRUB and rebooted but same error as above.

System is an old Dell Poweredge 1550
Ubuntu = 9.10 server
