Ubuntu :: Minimal Kernel Recompile- Init Hangs At Plymouth

Dec 23, 2010

I've been playing around in attempt to see how small a usable kernel I can build. The theory is that it should mainly be useful for preparing a recovery disk or some such thing; disk drivers and a few network drivers are what goes in.

I built the kernel with the attached config. It boots, reaches the hdd (if I specify root as /dev/sda5 manually), then dies when it tries to start Plymouth (something about catching a SEGV signal). What needs to be enabled to run Plymouth? Alternatively, has anyone managed to remove plymouth from boot on Maverick?

(That would require a modified mountall version, I know.) I'm using the mainstream kernel sources on Maverick (yes, I know Maverick uses 2.6.35; but this does boot).

Hardware: Wireless-RTL8192SE b/g/n, uses an out-of-tree driver (r8192se_pci, from Realtek; Ubuntu builds in an older version of this driver); r8169 works for ethernet; ATI Radeon Mobility 3200 graphics, AMD Neo X2 cpu; SATA hd in AHCI mode.

General :: Kernel Panic - Not Syncing - No Init Found - Try Passing Init - Option To Kernel

Apr 19, 2011

Im am building a Linux distro. It will be very tiny and fast.

I only have a minimal linuxkernel (bzImage) who is 1,2 mb big. And then I have Busybox who is 174,6 kb big.

The commands in busybox is: cd, ls, mkdir, rmdir, wget, httpd, clear, rm, poweroff, halt, reboot, fdisk, mount, umount, free, and cp.

When I compiled the kernel i use initramfs/initrd function and point it to a folder where initrd/initramfs source is.

The kernel works OK with others initramfs/initrd files. But not with my own.

Here is how the end of the kernelcomplie look like.

Here is my init file who is the initrd/initramfs source.

The initramfs folder contains "bin" (folder) and "init" a file. No more.

The problem is that the kernel cannot find/read init file.

General :: Kernel Panic In 64bit Arch Linux After Kernel Recompile - 2.6.35-rc3

Jun 15, 2010

I have recompiled a few kernels, but all on 32bit systems so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Running Arch Linux 64bit, most recent version.

Kernel Output:

My first thoughts was that it might be my grub bootloader configuration, so had a big play around with that but it didn't fix it. Also made sure support was built for filesystems. However almost all that Fstab mounts are ext3 anyway, and certainly the root and /boot are. Now thinking it may be a memory error so will run a check when I shutdown.

init: plymouth main process (58) killed by SEGV signal and that's where it hangs. Pressing ENTER or hitting Esc does nothing. What steps can I take to recover my machine and all the files I used to have on it?

CentOS 5 :: Broken Kernel / How To Recompile?

Dec 15, 2009

I tried to run some virtual machine using Virtual Machine Manager but the guest OS (windows server 2003) was not able to "see" the rest of my network. I believe VMM did some NAT-ing (192.168.122.x subnet) so i'm not able to "see" my network. I tried various network setting in VMM but couldnt get it to pull my network IP (192.168.1.x subnet). So i installed VirtualBox as a work around because i know VB work when i tried it on my windows machine. I ran into some issue getting VB to run, i think it was that i need to compile the kernel to "optimize" it for VB. I am fairly new to linux so that the impression that i get when i research for the fix to get VB working. In some of the forum post people suggest few things and it seem to me like it to compile the kernel. After a few hours of working i finally got it to compile but the computer crashed during compilation.

I am guess what happened is that i was trying to optimize the kernel for VB but the version of kernel i was using (2.6.18-164.6.1.el5xen) is already optimized for xen (VMM) so it crashed. I am looking to restore or recompile the 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5xen kernel. I am not sure if this is the right thing to do to fix it. With my limited knowledge of linux that all i can think of.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Hangs At /scripts/init-bottom During Boot?

Aug 25, 2011

I have a Lenovo TP W520 with a Nvidia Quadro 2000M (with support for Optimus)!I've tried to use the open-source optimus driver (Bumblebee), but found to many issues I had to deal with.both on 11.04 and 10.10) - therefore I've accepted the lesser batterytime... and choosed to run with "discrete" option in BIOS - setting Nvidia only mode!I can't use the 11.04, as I need iFolder (and can't get it to work with this edition, by the way I see the following problems on 11.04 too) - as a result I am using 10.10 (64-bit).

I have installed the Nvidia proprietary driver, and when attached to my dockingstation (connected to an switchbox) the laptop boots fine every time! But out of the dock, the laptop hangs at "running /scripts/init-bottom" during boot!To resolve this I've tried this (used the "nomodeset" option)... after this, it pass the "running..." every 4-5 timeAfter this I tried to upgrade the driver as described here... this may have helped - a tinytiny bitLast effort was to add "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint (MatchIsPointer "on")" and "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard (MatchIsKeyboard "on")" to "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf" according to this ... now it boot's fine every time... but at login, the login-box disappears and everything freezes! But if I choose "Safe Mode" i can login.

Ubuntu Servers :: Create A New Server Package And Leave Minimal Minimal?

Feb 17, 2010

After a long time I tried ubuntu(9.10) again on my fileserver, I have some remarks; why does a minimal server installation include X/openoffice? I don't need document conversion on a fileserver and I bet a lot of people don't. Wouldn't it be better to create a new server package and leave minimal minimal? low memory installs (64mb) don't work unless you configure swap by hand in between things, 64mb ram is a lot in my eyes. I mean, not to be rude but if I wanted all this I could've better installed Solaris.

That said it's stable and running fine. Since it's my home fileserver I tried to convert my previously created raid10 mirror on an adaptec 1200 card to a softraid 5 solution. This is wat I did:

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 From DVD - Load Kernel Operation Hangs At 97% (using Both Normal And Safe Kernel)

Feb 23, 2010

I am an experienced Linux admin and have been using SuSE for many years. My development machine has had every version of SuSE since '02 and although it is a little old, is in good working order. (AMD
2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)

When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error - Kernel Panic - Not Syncing: Attempted To Kill Init

Today I was upgrading my netbook with Ubuntu 10.10 on it to 11.04 via the Update Manager. I got a few errors and the Update Manager seemed like it wasn't continuing, so decided to exit it. However the on/off/standby/restart, etc. button in the top right wasn't responding either, so I decided to force a shutdown with the power button on my netbook.
