Ubuntu :: Graphic Options - Message - Your Hardware Does Not Support Unity
May 10, 2011
I had my recently installed Natty Narwhal running Unity. I changed a few simple graphic options for Unity, and the next time I log in, I got the message "your hardware does not support Unity", and then Gnome is running. How has this come to be??

The platform I used is Intel Q45 chipset. But my customer insist on openSUSE version 10.2. The problem I met is that I cannot get any graphic driver for Q45 chipset upon openSUSE 10.2 developing.

Im thinking of getting a new machine-the only thing is a lot pc's these days ship with ati cards rather than nvidia cards. ATI will work on windows ok but i seem to recall linux support for ati being somewhat non existent...since i will have a windows/opensuse dual boot on the machine should i stick with nvidia for the graphics card then?

how is the support for multiple, two or more, monitors in ubuntu (10.04) when using a graphic cards from AMD(/ATI), for example the HD 5770. (Which I'm currently using). I know that DP is required to use three monitors on a regular card. But other than that, will it work? Am I to expect a lot of work to be able to get it working? Or will it simply be impossible? (And yes, I know that AMDs(/ATI) drivers aren't always the best... Although changing to a card from nvidia at this moment isn't possible)
The background to my question is that I'm thinking about buying another monitor, same model as the current one I'm using, and later on perhaps expand to buy another one.Tried to search for it but wasn't able to find how the support would be in linux, and ubuntu in particular, since most I found is about the windows support, which should work quite easy and therefore isn't relevant.

I recently installed 11.04 and Unity 2D (because my old laptop can't run the full 3D version). So far I'm pretty impressed and its growing on me, despite the negative press I'd heard and my own skepticism of change going into the new UI.
One thing that I haven't been able find out is if there is an option to vertically resize the launcher based on the number of active icons. I only have about half a dozen icons pinned to the launcher permanently, so there's a lot of blank "dead space" on the bottom half of the launcher unless I have a zillion other things open simultaneously.
Is there a way to make the Unity 2D launcher automatically shrink upwards to fit the number of pinned icons + active applications? (I've attached a mock up of the sort of feature I'm talking about.) It would be fantastic if there was a way to do this because it would be a much cleaner and more efficient use of my screen space. I've already downloaded the Unity 2D Settings application, but there are only 5 or so things you can edit with that little app. I was hoping for a method with a bit more flexibility.
I've heard that Unity 2D is specifically designed NOT to use Compiz, so things like cube desktop and wobbly windows will never be available in this 2D desktop environment. (Sadface for losing out on the eye candy I used to have in 10.10 )

My system config. are Intel 945 mother board, 512 DDR2 RAM, 80GB IDE hard disk, P4 3GHz processor. When i try to install in graphics mode after disk checking i.e while anaconda is loading my monitor automatically turned off. So I recognized that problem with some driver. I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments.
From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup.
So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments?
Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's?
Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.

When the live CD is booted up, there is a notice saying Ubuntu is sorry, as there is no 3D support in the laptop. If the Live CD doesn't see the video card etc, then there is a problem. The laptop has NVidia Geforce 310M, meaning it has the 3D support, only Ubuntu doesn't see it on live boot, so what the use of the Unity desktop? The Gnome starts up.
I have seen Gnome, but I'd like to see Unity. How can I do it? I can of course download the NVidia driver. But to activate the driver, I have to restart the laptop, then the Live session would go away. By the way, if Linux to be everybody's OS, I think the "restricted" drivers should be included, as they are allowed by the owners to be downloaded!

I have an NVIDIA 9800 GTX. I have 2 DELL monitors connect to this card, one is a 24" and the other is 21".
I am unable to use Xinerama mode with Unity, because for some reason after logging in, I get no desktop interface, only background wallpaper, and I have to force reboot.
How can I setup dual monitors in Ubuntu using Unity properly? Note that I do NOT want to use TwinView, since this results in dead space around the smaller monitor.

So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

I'm looking to dual-boot Windows 7 and Debian 6 upon its release on my sister's laptop. I want to share a partition between the two of them so that /home points to this directory and the Windows equivalent also points to it (C:Users).
Anyway, I've heard good and bad things about the NTFSMount driver (I think it's NTFS-3G now) and the NTFSprogs project and so I am not so certain what I should believe. I do know that NTFS has relatively high overhead, though I do not recall the source of this assertion, so I am considering the use of EXFAT. An open source EXFAT project is hosted on Google Code at [url] and it utilizes the kernel module FUSE.
I'm quite certain that I've got everything covered on the Windows side -- that is, I know that both NTFS and EXFAT will be suitable filesystems for my required usage.
My issue is that I'm curious which will have superior performance and stability in Debian. I planned on building the package from source and mounting the device in my FSTAB but I have also found a PPA for Ubuntu on Launchpad at [url] that I could borrow the debian/rules from and make a .deb package from.
What do you guys think? Should I go at it with the EXFAT or NTFS partitioning? Is NTFS-3G actually fairly supported at this point? Or perhaps should I consider some alternate method?
I have also considered that the only files she will be sharing are those of music, videos, and pictures so it could be better to just link /home/xxxx/Pictures (Music and Videos, too) to the new partition instead of all of /home.
