Software :: Can't Figure Out To Do Slightly More Difficult Equations?

Jul 10, 2011

I've just installed Maxima and wxmaxima. I've learned how to do simple math equations (3x+7=16) but I can't figure out to do slightly more difficult equations. Specifically, I can't figure out what's wrong with how I input this equation:

Code:
solve (7^(-4*x) = 2^(1+3*x), x);

I've tried incrementally building the equation (starting with 7^(x) = 2, then moving to 7^(-4*x) = 2, etc.)but when I introduce the second x, I get a blank output. I have no idea what to do.

Ubuntu :: Any Program That Will Solve Equations?

Oct 25, 2010

I would like to know where I can find a program that solves equations for me. Like "6x-3y+3=0", and then get the value of x, or the value of y, as the output. I know how to do equations on my own of course (I don't know anyone that can't who uses Linux), but I'm a very lazy person.

Hardware :: Difficult To Decide About RAID - No Experience

Dec 5, 2010

I have no RAID experience on Linux, so I've found dozen of information on the net about software raids, hardware raids and fake raids. Now situation is not clear to me at all. I'm considering to buy one of these cards to run on my Ubuntu server (currently 9.04, but will be upgraded to 10.10):
1. Promise FastTrak TX2300. I believe this is fake raid as it has some RAID bios. It handles SATA II cards and has PCI interface (what is important to me because I don't have PCI-X or PCI-e).
2. Promise SATA 300 TX2 Plus. I believe this could be a software raid because it has no built in raid support at all.

So I don't need to install my system on future raid system I just want to add those disks as storage mirror to my existing system. So what card is better (I believe both are supported on current ubuntu)? Is card better with built in raid which has some settings in BIOS ? What will be setup of the card? I mean should I use any BIOS RAID options or I should disable BIOS raid and use linux dmraid? In that case maybe better choice is card without any RAID in bios ?
Sorry if question is too beginner, but I'm lost with all the information. The main thing I want to know if I should use BIOS raid featured to use fakeraid or I should disable it anyway.

Ubuntu :: US-International Keyboard Layout All Wrong And Difficult To Use

Apr 10, 2010

The US-International layout in K/Ubuntu seems to be extremely irritating and difficult to use. I'm wondering if I could find some help here. One thing is if a dead key doesn't work (typing in ' + t for example) it will produce nothing in Ubuntu, as opposed to windows producing 't. I must add a space after almost every apostrophe or quotation mark, which is becoming extremely difficult, tedious, irritating and unnecessary. Also the dead keys that are available are ridiculous. The dead keys I am used to and want are:

' + [letter] =
" + [letter] =
` + [letter] =
~ + [letter] =
^ + [letter] =

Which allows one to simultaneously and smoothly type English, Dutch and German but could (to a lesser extent) be used for French. What I get:

[Code]...

Which makes 's (ś) painful, as well as the many uses for apostrophes in dutch like m'n and 'k (producing mń and ḱ respectively) etc. Considering this layout is widely used and is pretty much the de facto layout in The Netherlands whose primary languages would be Dutch and English (and some German), why has it become so difficult to use? Also, how do I fix it?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVidia Quadro NVS 110M Difficult To Identify

Apr 2, 2010

I come here every two or three years, when I have some troubles with my graphic card. Indeed, once again. Since last Tuesday, I experience some system freeze. Since yesterday, I must run on low graphic mode. As there has not been any X.org or driver update, I suspect that my graphic card is running down. But I do not know how to diagnose this.

My configuration:
-- Dell Latitude D820 laptop;
-- processor Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz 667MHz FSB);
-- bi-canal 2x1024Mo DDR2-SDRAM 533MHz memory;

-- Bluetooth card for Latitude;
-- Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g;

I am facing some problems in font rendering issue for Urdu (South Asian language). Actually the alphabets are being displayed as, for example, "a p p l e" instead of "apple" - if you see this website, probably you will see the gaps in alphabets are making them difficult to read.

I have installed at least 10 different Urdu fonts but still no help, then I tried adding:

MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO="0" to /etc/environment but it also did not helped.

I am using OpenSuse 11.2, Firefox 3.5.10

I'm hoping to set one up on Ubuntu Karmic. also, I found this, under 'section 4' he gave no write permissions to any non root user, can this be extended upon? which directories do limited users require write access to? what else would you consider essential to security inside a chroot?

Fedora Hardware :: Slightly Different Nvidia Sound?

Jun 20, 2010

I just installed the nvidia drivers and everything looks much nicer but. All my sound works fine, except when I try and get the bell sound (I've not tried others) from the terminal. This is kind of annoying because I want irssi to alert me when I get messages, otherwise I probably would never have noticed.

I really don't know how this could have caused that, but it was working before, isn't now and there does seem to be a lot of reports online of people's sound breaking after installing the nvidia drivers so...

Ok, now that I tried a different set of keywords I realise that this problem seems to have been had by a few other people and is occurs when compiz is on. I'm still not sure I understand it and I don't yet have a solution. :/

Fedora Networking :: No Network On Slightly Older Machine

Jul 8, 2010

I have been out of the linux game for a few years and decided to get back into it, I've been working now for a few days on figuring out why my machine's network card does not seem to want to work on a new FC13 installation.The machine is an older Dell Dimension with an 2.53 Gig Celeron Processor, 512 Megs of RAM (A gig soon) and the ethernet card is an Intel Corporation 82562EZ. Sone generic thing, though FC13 does recognize and appears to have appropriate software.

ifconfig shows no IP address in the x.x.x.x sense, and restarting the network doesn't seem to do anything. The network card is in working order, I tested it in a winxp installation, and the cable is also functioning.

Networking :: Slightly Higher Level Traffic Logging

Mar 19, 2011

Summary: Several school networks in need of a fairly low-level way to log network use, especially Internet. Raw packet captures are too low (and big). Turnkey solutions we've looked at (Untangle) aren't really a good fit. This seems like a common issue. Detail: For legal reasons, we have to be able to roll back time every so often (ie. when death-threats are made on some web-forum). Currently, our traffic logs on Internet traffic are pretty high-level and aren't really useful to point a finger at the guilty or away from the innocent. We also like to keep our users honest by providing them with data about their own computer use (ie. what are the top 10 websites they hit).

I've been building up rules with iptables and ulogd to log the creation of new connections and save it to a PCAP formatted file for consumption by some very simple analysis scripts, or examination with Wireshark if required. Just logging new connections prevents the logging data from getting large in a hurry, but also doesn't give us a lot of information we would like (ie. the amount of data transferred). We've been examining products that offer fairly full-featured analysis, notably Untangle, but we do a lot of weird stuff (VOIP, VC, VPNs) with traffic flowing through very minimal hardware (PC Engines) running Linux. This is very inexpensive and very flexible, and we like it that way.

Slackware :: Vim Colours Change Slightly In Xterm When A Key Is Pressed?

May 4, 2011

I'm having a problem with vim and xterm. When I open a file and press any key, the colour scheme changes slightly. This doesn't happen if I run a 256-colour xterm (export TERM='xterm-256color') but if TERM is set to 'xterm' (the default) I see the colour change. Setting TERM='xterm-256color' in my ~/.bashrc is a "solution", but I'd rather not have to do that since it's never been necessary in the past (e.g., on 13.1) and I don't use any 256-color schemes for vim (usually just the default or possibly "delek"). It doesn't happen with rxvt or with Xfce's terminal. I've tried compiling some other versions of xterm but they either exhibit the same behaviour or don't build. I have tried running without any ~/.vimrc file just to be sure it wasn't one of my settings and I've also tried the sample file at /usr/share/vim/vimrc; the effect is the same.

Ubuntu :: Update - 3D - Dragging The Unity Launcher Up/down Looks Slightly Jittery Too

Jul 27, 2011

Running 11.04 64bit. AMD Radeon HD 6450 with proprietary drivers.

This is a new PC that I got a few weeks ago. Up until tonight, there have never been any issues. I earlier had an update for dbus and dbus-x11 which prompted me to reboot. After rebooting, I am noticing some mild to severe problems when gaming.

It's like there's a jitter, yet the ingame fps (frames per second) is normal. Window dragging on the desktop looks fine, but dragging the unity launcher up/down looks slightly jittery too.

Thinking it was just some sort of Unity/compiz problem, I booted into Classic desktop with no effects. Issue still persists.

Really want to fix this, as it's a pretty annoying issue =/

I realized it seems to have caused issues with scrolling too. Scrolling does not look smooth and is also jittery.

Ubuntu :: Xorg.conf And External Monitor - Resolution Seems To Be Slightly Off As The Outer Edges Of Screen Are Cut Off

Sep 24, 2010

I have Ubuntu (running Jolicloud) on my HP dv2000 laptop, connected to my Sony AV Receiver through HDMI to use the TV as an external monitor. However, the resolution seems to be slightly off as the outer edges of the screen are cut off. Is there a way to fix this by editing the xorg.conf file? My current setup is below. I tried adding the line "Virtual 1244 700" to the subsection "display", but when I restarted it threw me into low graphics mode. Is there anything else I can try?

I also tried setting up the resolution at 1920x1080 on the TV and kept the default resolution on the monitor as 1280x800, and as you would expect displays the entire desktop in a smaller version on part of the tv. However, the desktop is still offset, leaving the top and left margins cut off. So, perhaps I need a way to offset the screen? Is this possible in xorg.conf?

CentOS 5 :: 5.2 (native) - Gnome Dektop Munged Slightly Due To Attempted Gnome Upgrade

Against all advice in Centos docs, I built and installed several gnome packages in order to upgrade to the latest Gnumeric. Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?

Ubuntu :: Resolution - Top Panel Is Slightly Cut Off - Missing About The Top 20% Of The Panel

Mar 23, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu and really like it so far, having come from a PC background up to now. I've installed it on my Acer laptop and all is well there. However, on my desktop, the screen resolution doesn't match the Ubuntu desktop and fonts and graphics are very blurry. The hardware I have is:

HP Compaq dx2450 micro-tower FE281EA
Samsung 23" widescreen monitor, native resolution 1680x1050

When I check the resolution using System > Preferences > Display it says that indeed I'm using 1680x1050, which should be correct. However, the bottom of the Ubuntu desktop is cut-off, below the bottom of the screen, so I can only see the very top edge of the bottom panel. The top panel is also slightly cut off, missing about the top 20% of the panel. Left and right seem to be in line OK. The resulting blurriness of fonts makes it fairly unusable until I get it fixed.

I've searched fairly extensively and I realise there are other threads on this so sorry for posting again, but they all seem to be slightly different problems and all the responses are fairly or very technical. Maybe I can't avoid a technical solution and getting my hands dirty with a terminal prompt, but I'm hoping I can fix this without resorting to stuff I don't understand and might get wrong. I'm a technically minded end-user but not a unix guy.

Fedora :: Can't Quite Figure Out What The Cause Is?

Apr 29, 2011

I'm attempting to put together a 'nice' front-end for a set of image deployment scripts I've written. I'm running in to two different issues that I'm sure are related, but I can't quite figure out what the cause is. I am populating a variable with information from several text files to form my tag, string and default state for a dialog statement...

Code:
for dir in /tmp/apps/* ; do
APPMENU="$APPMENU $(echo $dir | sed 's//tmp/apps///') $(cat $dir/info)"
An example of the contents of /tmp/apps/office/info:
Code:
'Microsoft Office Enterprise' 'on'
The result of echo $APPMENU:

[Code]...

Does anyone have any idea what I should check for? Is there's a specific quoting method I need? In a Bash script I'm pulling quoted text from a file with cat then writing that same string (hopefully quoted!) to a variable. I have a single set of hard quotes (') in my text files presently.

Ubuntu :: Can't Figure Out What Is Using RAM (and It's Not The Cache)?

Jun 15, 2010

I've been troubled by the high amount of RAM that is used by my Ubuntu desktop. Before I installed Ubuntu 10.04 (desktop, 64-bit) my system used around 500MB of RAM when no applications were open (just cold boot into the GNOME under 9.10). But when I installed Lucid, I've noticed that my used memory is now reported as 1GB or more as soon as I log into the system.

I want to figure out what is using all the extra RAM but I can't seems to find the culprit. I looked at all of the processes and numbers just don't add up. I exported the list of processes into a file and summed up the memory used by every process in a spreadsheet. The total came to around 700MB. Yet, both System Monitor and "free" reported the time that system was using over 1GB of memory. This means that at least 300MB of RAM are used but not by any process, at least as reported by "ps".
